  • Why should China pay for something that rightfully belong to them in the first place?

  • It is better for Taiwan to develop Tesla Technology to protect themselves before Chinese army try to force them to "reunite"

  • Somebody should throw Lims shoe at the chinese government!!

  • a measly $1trillion?? us total debt is $15 trillion, why not abandon taiwan for 15trillion?? surly taiwain is worth more than $1trillion! and why dont americans sell off parts of usa to those who hold us-debt while theyre at it??? :/

  • Sell em!

  • Never! We stand with Taiwan! The story of Taiwan is the story of the US. We too were once a smaller country wanting only freedom and democracy from a larger, stronger, oppressive country. The person does not represent the feelings of most informed Americans. When I am President, I will make Taiwan a leading US ally. American and Taiwanese soldiers should stand shoulder to shoulder and defend Formosa against any communist threat!

  • You shouldn't get worried because one idiot wrote one stupid article.

  • Why are so many of you shit heads still confused about such impotant topics such as world history? Especially Chinese history! Go back and read up you dim witted fools. Taiwan will NEVER be integrated in any manner with China! Get that straight!

  • While past events can lead to future ones the past does not equal the future.

  • dick rider

  • Oh believe me, Commie pandas slip something into the New York Times drinking water daily. The whole newspaper is a socialist propaganda piece for the Left. And the Left would sell off their children if it meant monetary relief for themselves. Us will never abandon Taiwan or any allies to Communism or Islam aggression.

  • @darklighter1 True, unlike what that leftist Nixon started, am I right? :->

  • @595o Pardon?

  • @darklighter1 You know who started the relations with red China?

  • Some people are just retarded.

  • The USA will not abandon Taiwan. USA Military Motto: Leave no man behind.

  • SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL SELL

  • This video is way better if you read the description first. You guys make some awesome points

  • Your website:Calm down, NMA.It was just one person contributing an article on the New York Times op-ed page. So what. He is not speaking for the Obama administration or any other governmental entity in the US. Many American newspapers have allowed writers to contribute crackpot ideas in the past and the NY Times is no exception here Also: When will you get animated about the Taiwanese diplomat in a Kansas City jail for seizing her Filipina maid's passport & for foreign labor fraud? Bullying?

  • They ask for OUR help and rely on us to defend them but show the USA as some kind of drunk idiot eating chicken on a couch riiiigggghhhtt. I think Taiwan needs to stop relying on us so much for help, we are broke. China has us by rhe balls because if we were to sell jets to taiwan they would have pulled out all of their bonds and we would be screwed.

  • @hackneo64 I think this is mainly showing how Paul Kane wants the US to behave, and what that would look like. It's not how Taiwanese see the US. Anyway, China needs the US at least as much as the other way round, the last thing they can afford is to dump US bonds and see the value of their huge holdings drop to 0.

If the US was more willing to assert itself they could sell jets to Taiwan and earn some serious cash. China is going to play offended anyway, no matter how much arms you sell.

  • That is sooooo wrong!

  • From the op-ed piece: "Today, America has little strategic interest in Taiwan, which is gradually integrating with China economically by investing in and forming joint ventures with mainland Chinese firms. The island’s absorption into mainland China is inevitable. "

    This makes me so sad.

  • @knack26 Taiwanese businesses lead the integration with their investments: Per Dr. C. Y. Lin. Oct 2004 - "Official record shows a total investment of US$34.3 billion between 1991 and 2003, while unofficial estimates range from US$ 100 billion to US$150 billion." Investment rate and magnitude has increased taken off since those earlier times. Also, AmCham Taiwan 2007 White Paper revealed that 5% (~1M) Taiwanese choose to live and work in China. Taiwanese make these decisions eyes wide open.

  • doesnt singapore speak chinese? or do they not count as democratic?

  • Comment removed

  • @polarmerr I wouldn't call Singapore a dictatorship, but it has very serious democratic deficits - a judicial system firmly on the side of the ruling party, severe restrictions of the free press etc. (Google "once a jolly hangman" for an example if you like). Whatever it is, it's nowhere nearly as free and democratic as Taiwan.

  • @stefanmuc2k interesting. i read somewhere that Singapore was the least corrupt country in the world but i guess corruption has nothing to do with how free a country is.

  • So be nicer to us and don't stare for hours on end on the MRT and ask how much we make!!!!! It's weird and creepy

  • stay classy new york times / sarcasm

  • Who said the U.S. wouldn't throw its allies to the wolves? Taiwan is not Israel. For Israel, the U.S. will destroy itself.

  • @votumseparatum1 the one thing I never understood about US foreign policy -_-

  • Taiwan better come up with 1.4Trillion dollars soon LOL.
