I took Kenpo only made it to Yellow belt.it just takes way to long to learn and then to put it to use in the streets,I know Ed and those that started American Kenpo really did use it in Hawaii.I think most of the original guy including Ed Parker have passed on
@jiggahippo will when you run out of money kind of hard to keep taking class's, I would have been a third degree black belt by now.I was going to Gilbert Valdeze in Tucson AZ.He was one of ED Parkers first students.Jeff Speakman was also one of Gilbert Valdez's students and I know jeff. but Like i said when Money's tight and you have kids mouths to feed, which would you give up.

LOL
@colinshere01 Kenpo is informally transliterated into Kempo. A mistake is translation doesn't change what it is at the surface (coming from an English major). If you want to get into it, it should be quan fa.
@jmonkeys9 No, WTF competitors fight with their hands down because in WTF sport taekwondo you only use kicks. ITF sport taekwondo uses both hands and feet and remember we're talking about the sport taekwondo, you also learn the self defense side for real life situations etc. But I don't know much about kenpo anyways though I do know and im sure you've heard it before. It's the fighter, not the system.
@NightRider2k8 I totally agree with the last sentence. Anyways, I (as a white belt on WTF, may my knowledge be not much) have seen that they allow us to use our hands, but I see we focuss too much in the kicks and we forget that we have hands, anyways, they tell us not to have the hands down so we can protect our heads... I think some of the fighters just forget that the head is important...
@jmonkeys9 I'm currently an orange belt in kempo (hachikyu), working for purple. I also hold a green belt in TKD. I have to agree. In Kempo, we fight with one hand up and one hand down, like the flicker style of some pro boxers. Every TKD kid I've sparred with has a hard time getting by that.
I have sparred with many from different disciplines, no true students of the arts, and we all are..should ever berate or think that any discipline is better than another, it only shows that that student has missed the point, and truely does not understand the value of what we have all learned and continue to learn everyday.
@EvilDarkJackel that's because most aikidoka doesn't fight. most people(aikidoka included) doesn't really understand and appreciate the incredibly advanced level aikido is. Ueshiba sensei was an martial arts expert that risked his life in war many times. his aikido was what he discovered. and his students like Gozo Shioda sensei used to go and fight in the streets when he was young to test his techniques. most aikidoka never do this because they practice the principal(some are afraid probably).
@ymk19 that's like saying all styles of painting is the same. they are same in the way that all use paint. however some styles think realism is important, some think it's the idea, some what it expresses, and how to use color also changes. in MA some styles focus on survival(ie. krav maga), some are sports(like boxing/tae kwon do), some is focusing on the spirit(most of *modern* eastern MA). efficiency depends on what you learn and if you are willing to risk your life for the art or not.
@ymk19 that is easy to say, but having realistic well developed techniques will lift you to a higher level of fighting. "depends on the fighter" makes it seem like the MA has nothing to do with it, but it is also very important. it's like building a bridge, you can't just rip out random parts and expect it to work perfectly. so the person is important as well as the teachings, the belief, motivation and the technique.

@777AnimeCrazy No bouncing, your weight is off the floor and a good practicioner of any martial art will have you on your ass in seconds, the feet and your distribution of weight are key to good technique. Try throwing a solid punch when you have one foot in the air. However, I agree with the need to kiai (shout), when lainching an attack - it helps to focus...
@GuitarPurgatory Your no black belt, you are probably a begginer, cus real great fighters, real black belts and masters, sensei, sifu, etc. never underestimate any oponent or fighting style, plus nthey are not cocky, they are very humble people.
To be ready for any style you must respect all of them and be open minded tolearn any combat technique no matter what style comes from, plus fitness nutrition and mental preparation are very important, and Im a personal trainer
@GuitarPurgatory jeet kune do is mix all the styles you know, is kinda like mma. Plus no matter what style you practice its all you in the fighters, having knowledge on jeet kune do doesnt makes you a good JKD fighter. Plus theres no JKD black belts, Bruce Lee didnt believe in ranking belts, he said belt is only good to hold your pants
@GuitarPurgatory I don t care, how many styles you know, or how many black belts you own, the belt doesnt say shit.Cant say you would beat me cuz you have never fought me, + you are very wrong if you think Taekwondo is the only art I know, I have TKD 4 dan black belt, BJJ black Belt, Hapkido 2dan black Belt, hwarangdo black belt, Judo Brown Belt, competed undefeated in boxing and muay thai, studied savate and krav maga for years and Im an MMA Trainer and starting shotokan karate.
@GuitarPurgatory t fight a realtaekwondo fighter and you'll see its very effective check out kickboxing vs taekwondo wtf KO and you'll see how effective it is, TKD its so effective that hwarang warriors used it to defend theirselfs from the pirates of the other 2 kingdoms and hwarangs ended uniting the 3 Kingdoms with Taekwondo, check out Hwarangdo wich is the original Taekwondo and you'll see how effective TKD is
This debate started with Kenpo and ended with Kempo, are you sure who you fought? Japanese or Chinese/Hawaiian / Two different systems. Kenpo eats TKD for dinner.
@GuitarPurgatory theres no style better than the other its all in the mind, heart, physical conditioning and hability of the practicioners. Its better to mix it up, TKD is very effective if your a good practicioner, I dont like Kempo but doesnt mean it doesnt works. I have beaten alot of kempo guys with not much effort. But yea I practice TKD, boxing, muay thai, BJJ, Judo, hapkido and krav maga, I wanna learn karate but shotokan and kiokushin not kempo. Learn those and you'll b a vgood karateka
@TheIronCowboy123 In my humble opinion kempo is not that effective I practice Taekwondo, Hapkido, Muay Thai, Boxing, JiuJitsu, Judo and Krav Maga, I have fought kempo black belts 6 times 4 in mma matches, other 2 TKD vs Kempo, 1 muay thai vs Kempo, all 6 of them where easy preys for me, instead in mma matches I fought Krate Goju Ryu, Karate Shotokan and Karate Kiokushin and manage to beat them but they where damn hard to beat, I wanna learn those Karate styles, try them and you'll see :)
I do think there are certain differences and you can argue efficiency when you break it down. For example not using legs in boxing, which i did mysel. You can argue you limit yourself in terms of reach.
Then again, i do believe it all comes down to individual skill. The differences can be enormous.
You could take the best of each art and let them do a 100 fights. Or just enjoy all styles and leave it there :P
Kempo? Look again at the video, both are wearing the same Gi tops, the same belts, the same teacher. It apears that this is a sparring - training session and looks possibly... more like Tae Kwon Do vs. Tae Kwon Do. The student with the red paints seems to be a little more proficient at it. But I don't see any Kempo here, not that I'd really know, I'm kind of new to the martial arts, just started about 308 months ago. I just think this video has a mislabeled title is all.
it doesnt matter about what martial art your doing it all comes down to skill and the dojon your representing i am a black belt in tae kwon do and kempo so yu really cant compair these fighters tae kwon do is a relaxed art while kempo is a ready art so they are compleat oppesets
not trying to offend anyone but neither of these fighters are skilled enough to represent there respective martial arts. But at the end of the day your still the same person no matter which path you choose and everything depends on you, not your style
Call them back to the beginning... No! Back to the beginning of their training, they need to go over their basics again... Foot work and mindset needs refreshing, but neither kick ass. They both need to work on accuracy, footwork and not to be scared of the opponent. So mostly mindset and footwork. Sorry...
I havent done any sparring for a while, but what i hear from my instructor, whose a 9th degree black belt in Kenpo, the Taekwando people made A push to have groin contact removed from tournaments altogether, even though everybody wears cups; way i figure it, its because the Kenpo guys kept scoring with kicks to the nuts while the taekwando guys were trying to kick to the head.
@greendestiny88 you are absolutely correct..for example, alot of people would say that Jackie Chan's Drunken Fist is a total fake. Well, Jackie Chan practices almost everyday, even if you think drunken is weak, he could still beat someone up with it.
There is no a better martial art than another, there are just martial artists better than others. Everything's about to practice and practice and keep on practicing. If anyone thinks a martial art sucks, it's because you just don't like it, but that doesn't mean it's not effective
dude i dont care what anyone says tae kwon do sukks! my reasoning for saying this??? tae kwon do student rely on there legs way to much and once u get past those legs congrats u already win. I take shaolin chuan fa or shaolin kempo and in our class we have a black belt in tae kwan do i am but a blue belt and am wiping the ground with him cause he can use his hands. (not saying tht useing legs is bad but in any martial art u should be taught to use everything)

I don't like how the guy in red pants kept turning his back and walking away. Anyone else find that disrespectful, as though he thought he was better as a person?
Having studied both Tae Kwon Do & Kenpo, I found Kenpo muh more practical from a self defence perspective. Also alot more enjoyable to learn and great for fitness etc. If you're looking for a self defence martial art, it's Kenpo, 100%,
i have been doing kempo for ten years. kempo is close quarter combat and tae kwon do utilizes kicks. so Any fighter knows to get rid of the persons kicking abilities you need to close the distance between you and that fighter. From there the kempo fighter will be able to use their hands to finish off the opponent who basically doesnt know how to punch.
I have taken tae kwon do, judo, Hapkido and kempo karate. All martial arts come from the same family to dis one is to dis your own. Its not about what art is better or whose better. Its the principles, inner peace and confidence that you gain that really matters. No matter what art you study its all from the same family and you should treat everybody that studies any art like they are part of family and show respect.
@rossvanderlaan More MA practitioners should have that type of oulook. I think too many people start practicing for the wrong reasons, and in today's society with MMA becoming more popular, it makes it harder. Well said though, what have you practiced/how long have you been practicing?
@rossvanderlaan dang thats sick youve learned all those! thats impressive I know you wouldnt use your skill to bully and you have all the discipline and stuff but I bet if you were in a tough situation you could beat some serious butt!

too many kicks they just keep clashing. idc how fast TKD is if your all/mostly about your feet your going to die out faster because its a proven fact kicks take double energy of punches. kempo owns cause it means way of the fist and they are beast with hand technique
i agree its not the technigue it is the technician bruce lee was right
if u look at the old UFC fights joyce gracie's jiujitsu beat out everyone even though jiujitsu had never came out on top before that and also in the old UFC a little karate guy beat out a big sumo dude so it does depend on the person TKD and KENPO are great martial arts and either one of them can be kick ass if used correctly
i am 3rd brown in chinese kenpo jui jitsu..our style is from the yoshida clan...And our founding father is james mitose..whatever you learn..just respect others and teach them what you have learned in life to make them a better person
i used to think that kenpo was really cool looking but in reality when your in an adrenaline rush u cant really improvise, kenpo to me is just a bunch of presets waiting for a right moment and when your opponent is running at you what the hell are you going to do ?..tell him to stop
@dancepeda well the first step of any kenpo move is to move the oppponet....and kenpo like any other martial art should only be used in self defense.....and if a guy came running at me I'd move out of the way and he would just look retarted...btw I train in kenpo so i know what im talking about
So basicly you are implying that Tae Kwon Do sucks? If so you haven't done your study's correctly. First of all Tae Kwon Do has proven itself as the fastest martial arts in ways of attacking from a relaxed stance and such. Furthermore Tae Kwon Do has more than one style so it would be possible that you fought a "sport" Tae Kwon Doka instead of one who practices the art or traditional Tae Kwon Do. If you want some prove look up a few video's of the Kukkiwon.
@Mider999 I'm afraid that he only place I know is Korea. Ofcourse if you only want to see video's you could try and search for Kukkiwon video's and if I recall correctly the tv program Human Weapon featured taekwondo once and had a lot of interesting stuff in it.
I will say that Tae Kwon Do SUCKS ASS!!!!!! I have a 2nd in Kuk Sool Won, also a Korean style, and much more effective than TKD. I also have a 1st in Shaolin Kempo and KEMPO IS KING!!!! United Studios of Self Defense is THE most usefull Style there is. After all. The Shaolin Monks are the ones who invented Asian Martial Arts anyway. TKD SUCKS!!!!!
@dirtyness2005 I'm sorry but you are wrong. The shaolin monks were teached martial arts by an Indian monk named Tat Moh. You either haven't done your studies or you are yet another martial artist who is trying to convince everyone that your style is the best. That aside I would asume that a shaolin martial artist was taught in e more spiritual maner as in how to treat others with respect.
@zxcqws it doesn't suck, kempo is just a more advanced style consisting of a different in-fight strategy, plus it looked like the tae kwon do kid was inexperienced, what they should compare is someone really good at each, because the kempo kid isnt winning cuz kempos better, hes winning cuz the other kid sucks
@tywainwright1 Taekkyeon is an older korean martial art then Taekwondo, however it is not an earlier form of Taekwondo. Taekwondo's origin goes back to the 1950's where 9 kwans demonstrated their "new" martial arts and later combined it into what we now know as Taekwondo. You could also say that Taekwondo "originally" has 9 (slightly) different forms.
@zxcqws tkd is what came after the koreans were invaded by japan and forced to teach them Taekkyeon, and the ugly babie tae kwon do was born, cuse your not going to teach your enemys your real art.
@MDNSBS I believe you have not done well on your history research. If you would then you should have known that Taekwondo was the art that came AFTER Japan invaded Korea and the "old" arts had lost most of it's practicioners.
@zxcqws dude there is no sucking in karate its whoever has the most experience and who can pick it up fast anyone can take anyone no matter what they know
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
tkd just simply sucks.. its all show.. fuck that style... when i was a bb in kenpo i kick a 5th degree tkd bb...haha i owned his ass... he was u didnt fight fair.. i was like well u can fight for shit... i didnt even kick him once.. just used a lil boxing mixed with kenpo techs...haha tkd is for pussies
Kenpo is more defensive while taekwondo is more offensive. I feel that Kenpo relates to the streets while taekwondo is better for competition. A jump spin crescent kick may not be the best attack in a street fight. Once someone gets a hold of you or your leg, you're in trouble. On the other hand, breaking someone's elbow while throwing a punch to the temple is not the best attack in an arena (you're not trying to disable or kill the person).
They are both the right spelling. Kempo usually refers to the straight Chinese version(like Kara-ho Kempo) and Kenpo usually refers to the Americanized version(such as Ed Parker's Kenpo or Tracy Kenpo).
ive found the best strategy for fighting a tae kwon do style fighter is to keep some distance, stay out of the range of his kicks, and time him. no matter how fast they are, there is always a moment when they kick that they are vulnerable. it is at that moment that you should close the gap and finish the fight. im a kenpo and muay thai guy myself :)
like i said, u wait until he gives u an opening then you close the gap, throw your combos, and knock him out if possible. often times you'll finish the fight like this. even if you cant knock him out, you can land a good shot that will put him on the defensive and allow you put the pressure on him. if he does manage to survive the assault and get his distance from you, then you just go back to the strategy. keep ur distance and pounce when ur given an opening. im not gonna pretend to be a pro...
haha i was gonna say that i have ppl to come in close all the time to cut off my range of attack..so i know now how to score points even against that...i was just asking..but yea what you said is really really common..just when you have someone who knows how to counter against that counter.. it gets pretty interesting...lol...but yea bro whatever works for ya..haha
how do none work for reality.. i train in kempo and its a very good discipline although it does have its flaws but so does every one its not lk bjj and muay thai are perfect

All these VS things are pure fanboy food

James27000 11 months ago
it doesnt matter about what martial art your doing it all comes down to skill and the dojon your representing i am a black belt in tae kwon do and kempo so yu really cant compair these fighters tae kwon do is a relaxed art while kempo is a ready art so they are compleat oppesets
mrjmula1 1 year ago
not trying to offend anyone but neither of these fighters are skilled enough to represent there respective martial arts.

(not saying tht useing legs is bad but in any martial art u should be taught to use everything)

i have been doing kempo for ten years. kempo is close quarter combat and tae kwon do utilizes kicks. so Any fighter knows to get rid of the persons kicking abilities you need to close the distance between you and that fighter.

Well said though, what have you practiced/how long have you been practicing?

too many kicks they just keep clashing. idc how fast TKD is if your all/mostly about your feet your going to die out faster because its a proven fact kicks take double energy of punches. kempo owns cause it means way of the fist and they are beast with hand technique

@dancepeda well the first step of any kenpo move is to move the oppponet....and kenpo like any other martial art should only be used in self defense.....and if a guy came running at me I'd move out of the way and he would just look retarted...btw I train in kenpo so i know what im talking about

Jinx9516 1 year ago
So basicly you are implying that Tae Kwon Do sucks? If so you haven't done your study's correctly. First of all Tae Kwon Do has proven itself as the fastest martial arts in ways of attacking from a relaxed stance and such. Furthermore Tae Kwon Do has more than one style so it would be possible that you fought a "sport" Tae Kwon Doka instead of one who practices the art or traditional Tae Kwon Do. If you want some prove look up a few video's of the Kukkiwon.
zxcqws 1 year ago 13
@zxcqws Would you mind telling us were we can look up some traditional martial arts Taekwondo as for me im looking for such a place in L.A.
Mider999 1 year ago
@Mider999 I'm afraid that he only place I know is Korea. Ofcourse if you only want to see video's you could try and search for Kukkiwon video's and if I recall correctly the tv program Human Weapon featured taekwondo once and had a lot of interesting stuff in it.
zxcqws 1 year ago
I will say that Tae Kwon Do SUCKS ASS!!!!!! I have a 2nd in Kuk Sool Won, also a Korean style, and much more effective than TKD. I also have a 1st in Shaolin Kempo and KEMPO IS KING!!!! United Studios of Self Defense is THE most usefull Style there is. After all. The Shaolin Monks are the ones who invented Asian Martial Arts anyway. TKD SUCKS!!!!!
dirtyness2005 1 year ago 2
@dirtyness2005 I'm sorry but you are wrong. The shaolin monks were teached martial arts by an Indian monk named Tat Moh. You either haven't done your studies or you are yet another martial artist who is trying to convince everyone that your style is the best. That aside I would asume that a shaolin martial artist was taught in e more spiritual maner as in how to treat others with respect.
zxcqws 1 year ago
@zxcqws it doesn't suck, kempo is just a more advanced style consisting of a different in-fight strategy, plus it looked like the tae kwon do kid was inexperienced, what they should compare is someone really good at each, because the kempo kid isnt winning cuz kempos better, hes winning cuz the other kid sucks

@zxcqws and to add to ur point look up "taekyon" i think i spelt it right its an earlier form of tae kwon do and if u ask me its pretty dang cool
tywainwright1 1 year ago
@tywainwright1 Taekkyeon is an older korean martial art then Taekwondo, however it is not an earlier form of Taekwondo. Taekwondo's origin goes back to the 1950's where 9 kwans demonstrated their "new" martial arts and later combined it into what we now know as Taekwondo. You could also say that Taekwondo "originally" has 9 (slightly) different forms.
zxcqws 1 year ago
@zxcqws tkd is what came after the koreans were invaded by japan and forced to teach them Taekkyeon, and the ugly babie tae kwon do was born, cuse your not going to teach your enemys your real art.
MDNSBS 1 year ago
@MDNSBS I believe you have not done well on your history research. If you would then you should have known that Taekwondo was the art that came AFTER Japan invaded Korea and the "old" arts had lost most of it's practicioners.

The kempo fighter should close the gap and not give the tae kwon do fighter the space he needs to kick, good video though :)
nolanatwar 2 years ago 2
ive found the best strategy for fighting a tae kwon do style fighter is to keep some distance, stay out of the range of his kicks, and time him. no matter how fast they are, there is always a moment when they kick that they are vulnerable. it is at that moment that you should close the gap and finish the fight. im a kenpo and muay thai guy myself :)
eoneil55 2 years ago
so what are you going to do if the taekwondo guy knows how to keep his space even if you get inside his comfort zone?...
haaqquuee 2 years ago
like i said, u wait until he gives u an opening then you close the gap, throw your combos, and knock him out if possible. often times you'll finish the fight like this. even if you cant knock him out, you can land a good shot that will put him on the defensive and allow you put the pressure on him. if he does manage to survive the assault and get his distance from you, then you just go back to the strategy. keep ur distance and pounce when ur given an opening. im not gonna pretend to be a pro...
eoneil55 2 years ago
...but it works for me
eoneil55 2 years ago
haha i was gonna say that i have ppl to come in close all the time to cut off my range of attack..so i know now how to score points even against that...i was just asking..but yea what you said is really really common..just when you have someone who knows how to counter against that counter.. it gets pretty interesting...lol...but yea bro whatever works for ya..haha
