i read about this "amazing" song in a music blog.....but i don't know.....i'm not really a fan......maybe it's just me....seems like it'd be fun live, but i'm just not diggin it.
This song is great on its own; but, it is even better when you listen to the album in sequence. Great sequencing on the album - - - probably a lost art in the digital age. This song (as the 10th of 11th songs) is the climax of the album.
i would agree with you- sequencing is a lost art now where albums are just collections of just one lightweight bubblegum pop piece of crap after the other- check out the new super furry animals album and a lot of their albums in fact- sequencing at its best
10 month ago i even would have bought it at this point, because i listened like 50 times to it and it is worth more than money - right now i am just happy that no money doesn't mean no culture... :P
think about it, theyre aged from late 40's to early fifties, look like hobo's and hit men
yet still deliver a heart pounding live show and sell truck-loads of albums, and not an image consultant or "hype generator" in site. Thank F@#k for the Bad Seed's
I've seen them 6 times and they get better every time. love this album.Didn't really like Lotus Eaters until i heard it live, thought it didn't fit with the rest of the album; i was wrong. Album of the year.
Oh, fuck. That Fender Mandocaster sends chills down my spine... Sooooo good... So filthy, so distorted, but I love it! Go Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds!
I want to know how he sets that sucker up. I suspect it gets out through a Fender amp, but the sound he gets is so loud and abrasive for a mandolin that I think there must be something else involved.
it's a mandocaster, not a normal mandolin - thats why its sounds sound bright and strong -it's part mandolin part mini strat! plus -bear in mind the noise warren can get out of a violin . He doesnt use a fender amp -goes for little mesa boogies and the like.
I'm not sure if you wrote this comment in this tone because you thought I was retarded or what.
Obviously, I know it's not a normal mandolin. But look at some of the other videos of Mandocasters on here and compare the sound. I think Ellis actually puts it through Hiwatt amps (at least on the last tour).
The violin noise I'm more familiar with because I actually play violin. Warren often uses simple distortion, occassionally screeching the bow agaisnt the string on purpose.
This song grew on me incredibly. When you first listen the album the songs that really stand out are Dig Lazarus Dig, Today's Lesson and Albert Goes West, but the more I listen the album, the more I begin to appreciate Jesus of the Moon, Midnight Man and Night of the Lotus Eaters.
By the way, I want a music video of Today's Lesson!
A genuine musician, and performance artist!!! So sexy too! Love you Nick and The Bad Seeds -- you guys really know how to move a girl and ROCK!!! Yeah!
I'd come see you every night if I could.. being a groupie for you would be an honour!! Saw you at an intimate venue in Toronto and you lived up to way beyond my expectations!!! I use to be a Tom Waits fan... but your passion and creativity has raised the bar!! xoxo
An ever present third part slipping from character to observer/narrator and vice-versa, as well as slipping from some dreamy world (this?) into a deeper (freer?) dream. mr. ellis has been playing violin for the bad seeds for many, many years now. he just took on the 'miniature guitar' called the mandocaster. the beard he's sportin' has evolved since the conception of grinderman. as for as mr. wydler is concerned, both he, and mr. sclavunos have been switching it up for some time as well...at least as far back as murder ballads. i've had the pleasure of meeting and 'hanging out' with them on a few occassions. lucky me!
they are lovely men...they are the utmost of gentlemen. mr. harvey is the sweetest of all. i have been smitten by the bad seeds for many, many years...and many more to come. can't wait til october when they come back nyc.
So this year will be 20 years that I have now been listening to Nick Cave and finally I will get to see him live and what a better time than in my hometown and on my birthday. September 16th in San Diego can not come fast enough.
