  • I sometimes like a bit of noise from a non-sound fitted loco, it adds to the realism.

  • my favorite steam train you reviewed

  • I don't like engines that are missing wheel flanges.

I once saw a lionel model and it was very nice but all the drive wheels were lifted off the track and didn't pick up electricity at all.

all the electrical pickup was from the tender and the 4 trucks in the back had a motor for drive.

suprisingly it pulled a lot of cars.

lionel did a cheap job for once

  • Excellent review.....nice to see the motor in the loco. I had the tender power version of the 9F in black...and it was gutless...couldn't pull much at all!

  • Don't know if someone has said this already, but the 9f's did have a flange-less centre driving wheel set, for the same reason, to get round tight curves

  • @CutterCub - yup, I did annotate the video accordingly.

  • I have this model aswell. I got it from Hamleys when I last whent to london.

But I expected it to be Tender drive like the previous incarnations of this model.

but to my surpise it is loco drive and the tender is light. :) :P

  • hey there is nothing wrong with getting excited when you are talking/play with trains!!

  • I have the black version of the Railroad 9f, happily running around in Railfreight grey, complete with yellow cab and large double arrows on the tender!

  • To be honest, I get a bit hyper when my model has spring buffers.

  • i've got a railroad a4 falcon and it has sprung buffers and cab detail

  • I just got a rail road 06 shunter and it has proper rails roubd the side

  • This is a fine model and super film. My loco has even greater detail with brass coloured steam valves. I am not sure why that is. Unfortunately I am having to sell, it's on ebay if anyone wants to see the photos. You can get the link on my twitter page just look up adriancclark.

  • i want to get the br black version to suit the north eastern reagion

  • Seen alot of your videos, and great review! on your next video could you get the locomotive pulling a train just to see what it's capeable of?

  • @JAC4468 she features at the end of 'In Praise of Steam' on my channel.

  • @InterCity82 yeah i realized shortly after subscribing to your chanel sorry :/ whens the nexy video due?

  • It wasnt last to be built by BR, as Tornado has been built since then, but it still was the last train to run for BR, in 1950 or 1960. And still, the A1 steam loco trust might be building a Gresley P2 carrying the number 2007, but that hasnt been declared officailly yet, as it would cost £5,000,000, 2,000,000 more than what it cost to build tornado, at £3,000,000.

  • @danwarren97 It was the last to be built by BR at Swindon 1960.

Tornado was not built by BR but by private owners.

E.S was withdrawn in 1965 after just 5 years service.

  • @danwarren97

Tornado was Built by the A1 Locomotive Trust, not BR. Infact there isn't even a BR anymore.

  • @ClassA4Mallard yes I know that but what does it say on the tender?

  • @danwarren97

It only says British Railways on it to make it look realistic, there hardly going to put A1 locomotive trust on it, are they?

  • @danwarren97

Also, BR Was compleatly collapsed by 2000, 8 years before Tornadoes compleation. And Evening Star was not the last loco to run, steam ended on BR in August 1968, the last train was hauled by two black 5s, and then 70013 Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell is a very similer class, but with some diffrences like wheel arangements and what the locos where used for. A bit of History there! ;)

  • dose that train run on a preserved line

  • can you please please please please please please pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese do a vid on the 9f pulling coaches? please

  • I really hate hornby's couplings! Looks so... unrealistic.

  • my version of this train chugs at medium low speed

  • I'm just wondering. If real engine was ever P classed, what would the number be. 10? 12?

I'm so amazed with this model. Ahh! Important: I ran it on all three radius curves, and runs well, It also worked fine on 1st radius track pulling heavy load at the same time, as well as empty loco. Not derailing, just going a bit stiff. 2nd radius - no problems whatsoever. Coupling in the front - makes the fun even more entraining when it comes to manage a lot of wagons.

Just buy it. Worth every penny!

  • Listened to your review few times. Went to the shop today, and purchased this loco. It's all you said, plus - it pulls like horse! True "scaled" 9F, trust me. I've put over two meters of coaches, heavy ones too, and on long, rough and bumpy track. She just took them like feather. Fast one too! My Flying Scotsman is a genuine crap in comparison to this loco!

    Great review mate, thanks!

  • whats the differency between railroad models and the usual?

  • @ludlowish Railroad is kinda budget stuff. Much cheaper, and usually less good looking. Mostly no NEM box for coupling. Regular Hornby is supposed to be more detailed, metal wheels etc, NEM etc. Not always the rule though. Some RAILROAD models are really good looking, and Evening Star is a perfect example of that.

  • @ludlowish the railroad modles come with : sprung buffers and pick ups on all wheels and are usually toys that go for about 40 quid

  • you should work for hornby, i really enjoy your videos

  • I agree with you about it, she is a great loco for the price. I've got her and think it's great.

  • my 9f can only pull 4 coaches before it slipes

  • every railroad model comes with sprung buffers. it said so in the hornby mag

  • @hornbymanzpc erm, no I have a 3F and Class 47 that do not have sprung buffers. Maybe the Hornby mag means all new Railroad models.

  • Hey will, just wanted to correct that those two silver knobs aren't whistles, they are in fact safety valves. When the engine is stationary, there is no where to release excess steam so when it reaches a certain pressure it releases the excess steam.

  • Is that toby on the bottem shelf?

  • this is in my top ten list of engines to by from hornby. its brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I could see Toby The Tram Engine

  • just chose this for my christmas prezzie hehe :)

  • a few strength/haulage/traction tests would be cool

  • i hate to say that i've watched this video five times... but i have, plus, i even bought the train after the first time i saw it. you're the only person on youtube who makes decent train reviews. can't wait to see more.

  • @hegz1484 - lol, thanks for the comment! I shall do my best to keep it that way. Any suggestions you have feel free to make them.

  • @InterCity82 could you do the Orient Express

  • I am buying one

  • @batkid222

actually its 12 wheels but 10 driving so yeah

  • I like your Bristh Locomotives, they look nice good to run !!

  • lol it was 1960 when she was built

  • How Lovely I Want To Buy One Eventually

  • This loco is incredible, btw I love your videos man, keep them coming. I might sound kinda sad but I've watched all 223 of your videos in the last couple of weeks. You're awesome, I wanna start collecting them too and you really help with which ones I want to buy, I have years to get a good collection going, I'm 13. Which do you recommend that I get first?

  • @Cameestewee - get this loco right here! The 9F 'Evening Star' is amazing for the money :)

  • @InterCity82 I will get this 2nd I think, I need a set first, because I need a loco, something for them to pull and some track and a controller and whatever. What do you think is the best set?

  • @Cameestewee - any you like the look of :) simple

  • @InterCity82 haha, my grandad showed me his Hornby Dublo train set from around 1950, hasn't been opened for 58 years, we got it put together and wired up everything, and even after 58 years if being i a box in the attic it still ran really smoothly, I got a video of it on my phone, I'll upload it sometime.

  • he he 10 wheels 10 coaches lol :)

  • My Great auntie has an amazing picture of her, the model is so realistic to how this engine was!

  • chill pill?

  • brilliant locomotive! (model and real engine!)

  • man, you are so lucky. my town closed down the last hobby store and the closest on is in the next town.

  • intercity i sent you a message a while ago

  • intercity i sent you a messige awhile ago

  • Nice video will ! Did that steam loco's name change to the "Duke of Gloucester" Because many people have told me that the "Duke of Gloucester" was the last steam loco to be built by BR ? If you like check out my video of the "Duke of Gloucester on my channel it looks identical to the evening star ! ? :)

  • @NE317 - the last steam locomotive to be built in Britain was the Class 9F 'Evening Star'. End of. :)

  • @InterCity82 Very nice locomotive.Be careful with the pickups! The pickups tend to drift away from the back of the wheels causing bad electric conductivity which causes bad running so don't make her go too fast.

  • @NE317 - "Evening Star" was a class 9F, with a wheel arrangement of 2-10-0, while 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" was a 4-6-2 "Pacific" with Caprotti valve gear. The "Duke's" driving wheels were much larger diameter as well. The only similarity between the two is the high-pitched boiler.

  • Yeah, she was last to be built. It was Oliver Cromwell and a Black 5 to run for the last time on the mainline. There is dispute as to whether they were the last, as several branchline Pannier tanks supposedly ran until about 1974

  • @TheHenryWallace

Yeah, a few were still running into the 1970s. As far as I know though, they were for privert companys sutch as the National coal board and coal mines.

  • you sure this loco was in wrong box lol WOW

  • haha i have one exactly like this what ive just bought today, just tried it out n it works briliiant! great little loco :)

  • I have this and it is seriously a very very nice value for money loco with sprung buffers and extensive detail :)

  • Last to be built.

  • Ive stood next to this the hogwarts express and mallard in the national train musem in york

  • This is a cool loco, wish I had one. Could people look at my first ever two videos. There quite basic but I think every one will like them.

  • I'm American and model American trains, but now after watching this video, I think I might get that engine and "spice up" my collection!

  • @atsf3415dbr - haha! :) You will not be dissapointed.

  • great locomotives!! cannot beat those beautiful 9Fs!!!!

  • @dmncau - totally agree :)

  • @InterCity82 Did the packaging rubb off any paint or shine it ? Thank you for telling me about Hattons :) they got the black 9F Hornby Railroad model for only 56 pounds

  • it's a great model.

i have it now but i don't have the size of laout you really need to even challenge its hauling strength.

i was wondering if you could maybe make a video on testing different trains hauling abilities. cheers

  • @hegz1484 - I do have plans to do a series of videos that test a locomotive's haulage ability but can't say when I'll be doing them just yet.

  • @InterCity82

    cool

    cant wait

um.. your "how i make my videos" video won't work because of copyright violation

  • tender drive :( i have the super detail weathered edition and the contacts are crap lol

  • I got my 9F fro Bachmann directly at London Exhibition in Feb for £80 instead of £125 as it Factory recon a beauty

  • by the way be careful with the wires leading to the tender the break easely

still she is so strong for a railroad model

  • was that toby i saw? ;)

  • I find the RAILROAD range quite hit or miss some loco's like the Evening Star are of equal quality to the standard Hornby range whilst others such as the Virgin Class 47 although very good runners do have a slight amateur quality to them ;)

  • @dilwich123 - I agree entirely. Some of the range is obviously quite new and brimming with quality considering the price, but other models are obviously much older and have simply been thrown into the 'Railroad' packaging as they're not good enough to be premium or super high detail models. Having such a range of quality and price from Hornby is quite good, you just have to know what to go for - and with that, I'll help. :) Oh and it's locos, not loco's ;)

  • @InterCity82 actually i think really that most of the railroad range is a bit too basic for serious modellers, with the humble exception of the A4 and of course the 9F. It's still good for little kids or people on a very tight budget, but on sites like eHattons you can get a super detailed loco for only a few quid more than a railroad.

  • @TheCatapultTV - the Railroad range of models fill a gap in the market that no other company is trying to fill, hence their increasing popularity. I've just looked for class 9Fs and there's a difference of over £40 in some cases between the Railroad model and the premium ones offered by Bachmann. It's a similar story with the Class 31 and the Class 55 Deltic - which are all models now in the Railroad range. As I said, some are better than others.

  • Dose the 9f run on 3rd radius curves without derailing

  • can i have some of your lomacks from sets like the city indrustrial set

  • @scooter6820 - they've been put to use.

  • @scooter6820 doing what sounds intresting!

  • i remember when my Grandad told that he went on this loco when he was working at Ryecroft (In Walsall, West Midlands)

but unfortunately Ryecroft is no longer exist because of the introduction of Deisels and now its all overgrown

  • @MrMikeJkay - it a shame but steam has found a new life now on heritage lines and doing special charters all over the country - so we have to be grateful for that I suppose.

  • do you use hornby express points?

if so i was wondering: what radius "point Correctors" they need?

  • @hegz1484 - I do and it's R628 - the R628 will basically 'correct' an express point.

  • Comment removed

  • She was the last to be built

  • i wonder why does hornby not do this with all it's loco at this sort of price

  • that is the best loco ever

  • I bet that engine cam more than the railroad A4 can

  • @patrickward13491 - what?

  • @InterCity82 When i first got my railroad A4 sometimes slips like a tank engine when it pulls 4 or 5 coaces

  • Is it loco driven or tender driven by any chance? :-)

  • @1995TomHughes - loco-driven

  • @intercity82 - thanks again for the advice

  • @intercity82 - does that extra bogey come in that evening star railroad model?

  • @istich123 - I can't remember to be honest. But if you are having trouble, take a look at the underside of the front bogey as there's a screw you can tighten or loosen up. Experiment until you find what works best basically.

  • @istich123 The leading bogey is to smoothly lead the engines driving wheels into corners.

  • Thanks

  • @intercity82 thanks for the advice but can you tell me a bit more about the "second bogey" for me as I'm not 100% sure what you mean by that. Thanks, Ieuan

  • @istich123 - some models come with two bogeys. One for 1st and 2nd radius curves and 1 for more realistic 3rd radius curves and above.

  • Do you think she will look good pulling five 12-wheel pullmans with that livery? I need a very powerful loco as my layout has a steep incline on it. Also, I have an L1 Thompson and the front two wheels seem to turn in further than they should on 2nd radius curves. Do you experience this with the loco as that would be the only reason why I wouldn't buy it and can you easily remove the front couplings because that would look cool. Thanks, Ieuan

  • @istich123 - I haven't tested this loco out on an incline yet so I couldn't say but she is strong and has excellent grip. I'm sure she could handle the new pullman coaches very well. As for the front bogie, I've had no problems at all but I think she did come with a spare bogie for 2nd radius curves.

  • I envy you so much

    You have Tons of track

    And Tons of locos

    And i only have ATM a End-End "00" 2 track

But i hope i will have a lot more Stuff in the coming years

  • awesome loco!!! i got it the other day for my birthday . it a nice strong loco and looks nice and it is quiet too which is another bonus!!!! gr8 w8 aswell although a bit top heavy and tips over easy.

  • so his means that hornby's catalogue does not say ALL about the locos because in the catalogues it does not tell us about the detail in the railroad secton but it does else where in it

  • has she been DCC fited yet? I could be thinking of getting evening star as she is very powerful as your review was very helpfull! :)

  • @BR75069 - she has been DCC fitted yes :) and is smoother and more powerful than ever!

  • i have got the black 9f and that will pull loads the best loco i have

  • I may get one of these, what is the maximum amount of trucks it can pull? And the maximum amount of coaches it can pull? (LNER Teak size)

I really want to have one of these and I have twelve trucks, planning to get more. :P

  • @crazyracer12 - it can easily pull as many trucks/coaches as you can afford. Trust me.

  • @InterCity82 Wow. Sweet! :D

  • You have a great way of presenting models, all your videos are really fantastic. When you mention "running in" (leaving the locomotives running for a while) I thought that the motors became weaker after more use, is this the case? Or am I just being overly worried about motors "burning out"? I'm sure you have a lot more experience than me on the subject! Thanks =)

  • @Rabbitbunvoo - thanks for the comment! Motors, like car engines do need to 'run in' when they're new. This not only benefits the motor itself but also the cogs, gearing, wheels and linkages (if the loco has any). It gives these many moving parts chance to 'bed in' and become well lubricated. Then, just like a car or plane or anything mechanical, after some time you'll need to carry out basic maintenance on the moving parts and motor with tiny drops of oil and a clean. Do this and they'll be ok.

  • I picked up one of these a couple of weeks back. When I was younger, I always wanted an Evening Star but never got round to it. When I saw this video, though, I thought "Why not?"

And am I am glad I did! As you say, the detail is very impressive for a railroad model, and she's incredibly powerful too, not to mention by far the smoothest running of my locos. Must admit I was initially slightly taken aback by how fast she is - at the same power setting, my two A4 Pacifics are left in the dust.

  • @Whiggles1 - oh excellent! :) Yeah, she's one very impressive loco all round!

  • I was looking to get one and after seeing that i am 100%getting one.

  • very smooth at that speed :)

  • Did you have a dcc loop on the outside then? if yes did you chip the loco and is it dcc ready?

  • @SuperJimjoe - the outermost loop is usually in DCC mode yes. The loco is DCC ready. And she was chipped days after getting her.

  • :P I was watching this and browsing Ebay at the same time, and while browsing through, I found an Airfix kit for Evening Star and I'm like, " There's the Put together version, and the build yourself version." wow. XD

    Lovely loco it looks :P

  • @BhanuHabbo - haha lol. yes she really is beautiful

  • Comment removed

  • someone I know has a real 9F called 'Morning Star'

  • That little steam engine said @5:56 said wow watch where u put ur hands pal. He's also saying yay new engine

  • Yes, a fantastic model for the money !!! I have 2 Bachmann 9f `s, I can by 2 yes 2 of these for the same money, all that needs to be done to bring this model in close to the bachmann one is to add brakes to the loco / tender,Springside models make these... make a drag beam to the rear of the loco ( under footplate) of the cab , and add a few pipe runs as per the Bachmann model and there we have it.... fantastic !!!!!!

  • i just opened a different railroad engine today (the GWR county class) and it is just as amazing. spring buffers, hand rails, just a huge amount detail. i was just blown away!!!

  • Its not going to hurt.I got banned from the shop for asking for a ten pund discount on blue rapor!

  • @2001Randomkid - find a better shop.

  • @2001Randomkid - any shop that bans a customer for asking for discount has no idea how to do business and will most probably go bust or do very badly. Business is business and any decent shop owner will be keen to make a deal.

  • @InterCity82 Thanks for making me feel better mate!

  • i might get that loco.

  • great video i think i might get one eventually.

  • I have this loco aswell, i got her for £50 and shes amazing ;)

  • i have this train with the silver seal box which and on ebay is worth £90

  • I Was In The Model Shop Yesterday And I Had A Look At This Loco And Boy I Was Was Imporessed But She Didnt Look Appeling But Im Going To Modelzone Today To Purchuse A New Loco

  • You got very excited about it, but many thanks as this made me go out and buy 2!

  • Hi i have a couple of questions

Is the tender weight same as the loco?

Which set of wheels actually moves? the loco's or the tender's?

and finally, is the loco dcc ready, dcc equiped or without?

    thank you for your time

also i like your videos of the trains

  • @iSHooTeRxX - the tender is a lot lighter than the loco as it lacks a motor. the motor drives the main driving wheels on the loco, just like in real life. the loco is dcc ready.

  • @InterCity82 - Thank you for using your time to answer my questions.

  • Never new the railroad range included this loco - won't be the most detailed version that Hornby have done but still - its the Evening Star!! Looks pretty good quality packaging for Railroad and the detail is actually better than i thought it would be :) I was about to say - how does that thing go round curves - until u answered my question - Lol! SPRUNG BUFFERS - BLIMY its a Railroad - they must have packaged the model in the wrong box - it says railroad!! :D Must be a Hornby Model - mental!!

  • I like your trains but on this video i think the little one is confused LOL :D

  • I think hornby mixed up this and the LMS single wheeler's packaging. The evening star deserves to be a super detail and the single wheeler be a railroad model. dont tell hornby, though. they might raise the price!

  • @KnapfordMaster98 - lol, you're right. This model is excellent for how much it costs and totally and utterly puts the LMS single wheeler to shame.

  • @InterCity82

Agreed about Evening Star. Picked her up today and the loco is simply amazing. Can't comment on the LMS Single Wheeler, but I do have it in CR livery (no. 123) and that too is incredibly beautiful.

  • possible the best railroad loco from hornby ? :)

i also think the railroad LMS Patriot looks nice.

  • *92214 and *92212

  • Evening star is preserved, there's 92114 at the nymr and 92112 at butterley.

  • could you do a vid on the evening star pulling coaches please sam

  • @samster412 - I definitely can and shall do it as soon as I can

  • would it be possible to get an etched nameplate? the painted on one looks like it'll wear off easily.

  • @irwellsteam - there are some companies that will create nameplates for you

  • maby she could be classed as a super detail railroad model

  • @matanuialive2010 - maybe, but if you bring out too many different ranges of models, it can be expensive for the company and confusing for the customer

  • actually she was the last to be rolled out of the works not the last to be built

  • @matanuialive2010 - according to Wikipedia she was the last to be built and the only loco to be ear-marked for preservation right from the start.

  • @InterCity82 Though your source is questionable, you are indeed correct - Evening Star was the last to be built, at Swindon in 1960, and was the only engine to be set for preservation from the off - Tornado doesn't count as it wasn't built for a main-line company. A very nice model overall, and very much well worth the money.

  • is the evening star still here today
