I'd place my bet on Sun Ra as being the innovator any day.

It only takes common sense to realise the importance of him

The thing no one commonly knows about Sun Ra is he could listen to 15 min of music and write the whole score from memory. He was a visual as well as auditory music genius.

The other thing a lot of people don't know is how common this is as well. Concerning the fact that Mozart's compositions were well beyond the complexity of this simple chart, Mozart could write much more complex pieces by ear with no auditory example, and have his first drafts free or error. This thing repeats for almost all 5 minutes. Not really quite the auditory music genius a lot of people say he is.

Interesting---the lead and rhythm musicians seem to be playing in somewhat different times from one another (I don't seem to recall that in the Arkestra's versions)...but it works. Is it deliberate?

ra worked them to death, was the ultimate perfectionest.the man had at leats a dozen versions of each piece, the band was known to have every variation down cold.
