@nicepuppy123 The "Dodge" tool. Says so right there in the video. That's the icon in your toolbox that looks like the black lollipop I mentioned before. Same place where you find the "Burn" tool. At that point I was doing it on the upper layer where I had applied color to "rem-light" the cat.
@nicepuppy123 On your toolbar, click and hold on the icon that looks like a black lollipop. That's the "Dodge" tool, by the way. A fly-out menu will appear showing three tools: Dodge, Burn, and Sponge. The burn tool icon is a hand with curled fingers.
Baron: that was delightful! Technique and entertainment all in one package (and very cute). Stumbled across this checking out an answer on Yahoo!Answers to someone's question about how to draw a cat in Photoshop. I will definitely view more of your videos AND pass this on to friends.
The "Stipple" brush, for lack of a better name for it,is a brush comprised of a bunch of dots (pixels) into a loose cluster. If you go into your brush palette in Photoshop, you'll find it in several sizes. It is used just like any other brush shape on the brush palette. I used the Smudge tool with a Stipple brush shape to drag out color to create the furry look.
I used an inexpensive screenshot program called Easy Screen Capture. I actually did all three of my Photoshop videos with the trial version before I had to buy the program outright. It's very easy to use. Once I captured the video, I was able to speed it up and edit it in WMM (or any editng program you like).
I've seen and done better, too. This tutorial is designed to get beginners to have some fun with what is often considered an intimidating program. A "Masterpiece" would have taken longer, exceeded YouTube's running time, and would have been too advanced for the audience I'm addressing. Thanks for the five.
Thank you very much! If you look at my "Tyrannovision" series of videos, all the digital environments I use as "sets" are created pretty much the same way from scratch as this Himalayan Cat picture. I just use different tools to create geometric shapes as my building blocks.
I think that if you got to know your photo/paint program really well that you could very easily do similar work to mine. The beauty of working this ways is that it's easy to make corrections as you go along until you get the picture the way you want it. And the most important part is that you gotta have FUN with it all.
No, I was just trying to be clever. I spelled "Freehand" and "Fun" with a "PH" to go with the word "PHotoshop". "Freehand" means I'm just winging it freely with the mouse. A mouse on a mousepad is all I'm using. Tony, I have recently learned of a free photo editing software called GIMP that is similar to Photoshop. I'm certain that if you do a search on "GIMP" you'll find a source for a free download.
Photoshop is a program you have to purchase. A considerably cheaper version that will still do what you see here is Photoshop Elements. You can also do the same basic things with Paint Shop Pro, a program similar in nature to Photoshop.
Do you want to draw it on a computer, or on something more real-world like paper or canvas? If you look at the video again, you'll notice that I start out by just making large shapes, and then just fine-tuning them until it all looked like a cat to me. The best way to learn how to draw cats is to observe real cats and look at how they behave, then just practice sketching what you think is interesting about them. I do that a lot. Pencil and paper.
Heyyy thanks for sharing the video god its cute X3 I love the idea great explanation >.< want to do one really since I need to learn about photoshop. 5 stars mate!
Keep in mind, however, that once yo uconvert to Grayscale, you lose all color data and cannot function in color in that mode. Now if yo uwant to work in grayscale and still have that color capability, just go to
Directly under the Paint Bucket tool. Click and hold down on it and you will see three tools on a flyout menu: Dodge, Burn, and Sponge. The Burn tool icon looks like a hand, the Dodge tool icon looks like a black lollipop.
The best way to learn is to have a friend who knows how to use it sit you down and show you enough to get you started. Just so you know where the toys are and what they do. Then just keepplaying with it. Photoshopcafe(dot)com has amazing tutorials. Actually, so does YouTube! Bookstores like Borders have excellent user books in their computer section.
I love it- so cute! I have a Himalayan cat, and I used to work at Adobe, but there's no way I'd be able to create artwork like this! Best that I can do is edit my photos! ;-)
lol....i like that comment u mad bout that they look like chihuahuas xD....i loved the kitty! my himalayan is fat and old cuz i feel his saggy skin from being so fat evry time i scratch his neck XD i loved the eyes u made they look so big :)
Haha, just too cute. I am speechless--the power of cuteness. I have a persion kitty, and she really is skinny, you can only tell when you gave her a bath.
Fatter than the one in my video?? Gee I thought I had fattened him up pretty good! LOL. Y'evver shave a persian cat down to a "Lion-Cut"? They're like chihuahuas under all that fur!
Thanks, AVDJ! I've not seen any Photoshop tutorials quite along these lines, at least none that provide narration. Most such tutorials are highly technical and very specified in their tasks, which can still be daunting for most casual users. I just wanna share how fun the program can be. Once youknow where to find the toys I'm using, you can work very intuitively. Oh yes, I shouldalso note: ROLLERBALL mouse here!
At the beginning, it it wans't for the ears, it looked more like an yeti than cat.

@nicepuppy123 The PAINTBRUSH is what functions as an airbrush. Pick a blurry round brush from the Brush Palette.

I would really like it if you would post your art to a site like deviant art so we could see a high quality version of the finished product. :)
