Great videos...any chance you could tell me what brand your rotating engine stand is please? We are working on a Ford 390, and have replaced the engine stand three times. Current rotating stand is from Jegs and is rated at 1,000lbs. Stand works great, but the pin on the crank handle shears once you attempt to rotate. Thanks in advance!
@X2N18 Unfortunately, all of our DVD's that we sell were made well before HDTV's even came out. They are all SD. We do all of our modern stuff in full HD, but no new video projects in the works, other than a NOS video to finish, and that'll be digital download only, most likely.

This is fucking rubbish, Using a rattle gun on main bearing!! I bet that torque wrench isnt even calibrated. This is complete garbage dont waste your time people!
@geoff390 you need to pay closer attention when you watch instructional videos before you flame in the comments...
The impact wrench is used during the 'pre-assembly' mention of the video and the setting on the wrench was at lowest torque rating meant only to seat the main caps past their notches (standard on SB Chevy)
The beam torque wrench is also only used during the 'pre-assembly' mention in the video.
The "final torque" setting is done at 1:33 with a pro grade click type torque wrench.
@BoxWrench It doesnt matter if you only "pre-assembling" it is bad practice the only thing that would be acceptable would be using a drill with a clutch in it on a very low setting. As for the beam tension wrench why use it if you have a "pro-grade click type" why not use it instead?
@geoff390 I have the basic engine building video and they spend time explaining how to do many jobs with the tools one has available; this might explain why 3 different tools are used to tighten these bolts. It's probably for demonstrative purposes.
I don't like "rattle guns" myself, but I don't see any harm in using them to start a bolt. If anything I would think it is simply more time consuming having to switch tools.
Can a engine run on essensial parts without all the high tech crap like egr valve and stuff i want to build a ready to run engine in a geo tracker without ac and all the extra functions wht are some basic things i need to build one
@69chevymaro yes, this video is an intro to the 'Basic Engine Building' DVD that we offer from the BoxWrench site.
The video is not a 'talking head' however. It's a complete step-by-step how to that shows close-up details of every aspect of a complete piston engine rebuild, including the parts traveling through a machine shop.
@goldfishcarlos if you watch again at 1:24 we use 'piston ring' expander' pliers to expand the rings to fit them over the piston and into the ring groove.
Then at 1:27 we fit the piston into the 'ring compressor' just before sliding it into the bore and tapping it into the piston with a specially designed 'piston hammer' (you can also use the padded end of a normal hammer handle)
Our 3 1/2 hour DVD, 'Basic Engine Building' will take you through every step in a rebuild if you're interested...
@BoxWrench Thanks, i have been familiar with the ring compressor but never used the pliers and i was wondering if it could be used to fit one ring at a time while assembling the piston inside the cilinder, thank you for your reply!
is this guy for real? using an impact wrench to cinch up the mains and then uses a deflecting beam torque wrench incorrectly for the final pass? gimme a break...save your money people.

I think all these wankle wankers should look up the meaning of a piston a piston does not describe what it looks like it describes what it does and even tho its a wankle it still does the same job but in a differnt way
To hell with rotary engines.. 3 blown in my rx7.. Gotta a mild chevy 350 in it now laying down 280hp to the tires with the stock rear! It wieghs in at 2500.. W/Hp Ratio? Does wrk nice..
this guy is dumb he said all engines have pistons that are connected to the rods which are connected to the crank well what if you have a rx7 or rx8 they have rotary engines which do not have pistons.
@dk4life164 .... we hear this all the time from the wankel crowd.
Maybe we should have been more specific and said that all "piston-based, gasoline-burning, non-diesel, four-cycle" engines are the same with regards to the engine building tools and techniques required...
All those specifics don't exactly make much difference however when it's completely obvious to anyone watching the video that we are working on a piston-based, gasoline-burning, non-diesel, four-cycle engine...
I purchased the "Basic Engine Building" DVD, and it is amazing! It explains the steps and tools needed to completely disassemble, remove, reassemble, and install a V8 engine. The DVD was about $33 including shipping.
got a 4l60e transmission that is not shift right, have to let off gas petal to get it to shift. what do we need to do to fix this problem. we computer scan it a code 83 came up. how do you buy your tranmission book from you.
The large Ratchet wrench that has a dial at the end (or sometimes an integrated scale) are called "Torque Wrenches".

Torque wrenches are also covered in the "Engine Building Tools" section of our Community forum at the BoxWrench website. Link is shown in the logo to the upper right as well as within this video...
Excuse me I'm getting ready to start building a 347 stroker motor out of a 302 small block and I wanted know if I need to torque anything on or in the block tighter then stock?. Or if I need to make any adjustments to the valve lash other then stock.

the DVD covers intake manifold removal and installation.
If you'd really like an '8-stack', you would need to get the appropriate intake manifold and carbs and just use the instructions on the 'Basic Engine Building' DVD to correctly seal and install your new intake to your cylinder heads.
BoxWrench? I wanted to build an engine from scratch eventually, maybe in a couple of years. This DVD will show how to build a complete engine right? And what about knowing what parts to buy as far as connections and cooling etc...
what could be the problem...I have a 350 with a hydraulic flat tappet cam, i was turning the engine over as i primed the oil pump with my drill and i noticed only the driver side lifters pumped, but the passenger side would not. all the lifters on the passenger side collapse, but the driver side are all pumped up and solid...any ideas?
You definitely don't want to actually, continuously turn the engine over while priming. Especially if you have a new flat tappet style camshaft. You'll wipe all the protective break-in lubricant off the cam lobes before start-up...
Set the engine at TDC for #1 and run the primer drill for a minute or two (occasionally it takes longer) then rotate crank one full rotation (this will be TDC for exhaust stroke #1) and run primer again.
Repeat until all rockers oil. the 'BEB' DVD shows all this...
ah ok, thanks man, also i have my motor filled with Rotellat T for the same reason there's assembly lube, thanks for the help, i'll try that later today.
This is just what im looking for ! The video is super cool .. and totally watchable, where can i get a copy !! .. Im going to take apart a 1995 MR2 engine tonight ! :P
Glad to hear this type of material is what you're interested in...
The logo on every one of our videos on YouTube has the web address and the "more info" link and details areas have links directly to our shopping cart if you want to look around.
Can you help me on my 350 Engine.I have treid 3 different carbs in still getting the same of miss firing not idling good I have new plugs and wires in a new electronic ignition in the disturbture cap.what can I do to trouble shoot this problem
Lots and lots of reading and even more wrenching over the past 20+ years. The best way to learn is to take something apart and grow your experience and knowledge by putting it back together according to rules and techniques of those more experienced than yourself.
That's the number one reason we produced the 'Basic Engine Building' DVD... to share the knowledge of all those years and get someone with a bit of interest past the learning curve of starting out.
Does anyone know the name of an high performance engine rebuilder that when they test run their engines, the exhaust is through the brick wall. I think they may be out in California and I know that they did an engine for Sully Erna of Godsmack, any help please
Man you really tear that engine apart and rebuild just like a walk in the park! Thanks for the knowledge, very informative for someone who's not cracking an engine open every day.
Yes, using a stretch gauge on the rod bolts is much more accurate for final tightening of the rod bolts.
You must have rod bolts that are machined with dimples to accept the stretch gauge though, and generally the method is considered a high performance engine building technique.
This sample is from the project called 'Basic Engine Building'. For the average stock engine rebuild, standard rod bolts and torque ratings are fine. In high performance building, the stretch gauge is preferred.
Just thought i'd say that this is the best dvd on engine building ive used, its so detailed with proper illustrations and parts explained, it helped me get a much better understanding of internal parts and how they work, it also helped me as i was a beginner at engines and cars and it helped alot. Great dvd and a fast delivery from USA all the way to UK, thanks a lot and highly reccomended.
these videos are awesome, I have never in my life seen a book or video as detailed AND understandable.. I love how easy the vids are to follow. i'd like to buy a cope of the DVDs, but i would like to know if they're available for purchase other than online.. anyway, thanks for the great videos!
There are some stores that carry the old version of the DVD called '8-Point Rebuild' but don't bother with that version.
'Basic Engine Building' is the highly improved 2nd edition of the '8-Point'. There's an extra hour of footage and was completely re-written and re-narrated. Lot's of computer animations added too.
Links to get the disc are at the top right of this page in the "more info" section or our URL is in the top right logo as well.
@M0FHIRY We're glad to hear our DVD helped your understanding so much...
We're working towards some type of digitally available version, but for now, the full sized 3 1/2 hour DVD version is the best one to check out... besides the free chapters here on YT.
I made my 1st ever engine rebuild using this great DVD, and it was a performance big block V8 engine producing around 450 HP! .. I feel that I have a knowledge of 30 years of engine building, Thanks BoxWrench!!
Great Video! I purchased the DVD and I love it! I know my way around a engine (Lawn mowers, go-karts, weed-wackers) But not a inline 4 nor a V-8 and this video greatly improved my knowledge! I give it 5 stars and worth every penny!
The complete 'Basic Engine Building' project is currently only available on DVD. It's three and a half hours long and has a full interactive interface for Glossary Terms and Tool usage through the entire video.
Would be way too large of a download for the average person with an average connection. Plus, the video looks way better on DVD...
In the future we'll work on some shorter download purchasable clips.
Nice vid, although I was a bit horrified to see the tech beating on the piston with a hammer, A steady & forceful "shove" into the bore is preferable.
That piston install hammer is made of plastic and has dead-soft shot fillings. It's made for beating in pistons on purpose. The particular type of ring compressor we used required solid strikes to the piston for install. There are many other methods to do the same...
No pistons were harmed in the making of this video... : )
Yup, it's hard to break old habbits with die hard, old school mechanics.
We like to use cutting edge and innovative tools when they come out...that orange piston hammer is awesome because it's safe to smack on pistons and has the long nose that lets you tap the piston gently all the way down until it lightly seats on the rod journal.
It's way better, it's much easier to tap while using your other hand to square up the rod to the crank throw to be sure the bearings meets the journal squarely.
damn i worked on engines before but not v8 i have worked with a Honda inline 4 with my dad when we had a shop, lawn motors and weed wackers aka 2 strokes lol
The clip mentions "any four-cycle engine" which yes, refers to pistons engines. Technically, a rotary engine could be considered a four-cycle engine but really is the exception to the rule...
The 'Basic Engine Building' DVD is about as close as any single video project can get to covering the tools and techniques of an entire group of engine families.
Rotary engines have always been the exception to the four-cycle family. We'd love to see someones efforts in explaining the differences...
Im buying this video right now, you guys are great. Do you have any simple recommendations to increase power in a 76 351w? Like taking the egr valve off or a nice exhaust?
You can do all kinds of top end improvements such as Carb and Intake swaps, even cylinder head or fuel delivery alterations to gain slight increases in power. They will give you nominal gains in power and certainly nothing you will feel by the 'seat of your pants'.
The biggest difference you can make if you actually want to feel the increase in power (as well as easily notice a decrease in fuel economy) will be to change the camshaft.
A cam change is the single most effective power builder.

Most serious engine builders don't expect much out of th 305 blocks...
You can bore out the cylinders a bit, but the overall design of the block and the specs of the crank will limit you to lower-end horsepower build-ups.
Your best bet is to start with a 350 block and build from there.
At least the mounts are the same for swapping a 350 into an engine bay that came with a 305...

did u grow up in a family that built engines? or how did u start to learn about rebuilding them
drkhntr00 2 years ago
Self taught for the most part.

I think they may be out in California and I know that they did an engine for Sully Erna of Godsmack, any help please
hodges710 2 years ago
Man you really tear that engine apart and rebuild just like a walk in the park! Thanks for the knowledge, very informative for someone who's not cracking an engine open every day.

What on earth's the Acetone for? : D
MrGuvEuroman 2 years ago
We actually use Lacquer Thinner more often than Acetone but either of them are used frequently through any engine rebuild to clean parts surfaces.
Before you paint anything, you should degrease the surface with Acetone or Lacquer Thinner.
Before you apply gaskets sealant or dry gaskets you should prep the surface with Acetone or Lacquer Thinner...
The 'Basic Engine Building' project shows all of this being done many times throughout.

Do you use a stretch gauge on those rod bolts?
PsychoPilot 2 years ago

Very glad to hear the DVD was so helpful to you...
That's why we made it. There wasn't anything out there, so we decided to make it as informative as we could.

these videos are awesome, I have never in my life seen a book or video as detailed AND understandable..

We ship DVDs everyday...hope to hear from you!

thanks a lot, I will definitely be buying one of the DVDs from you guys. and thanks for the quick reply.

@69FordPickup Thanks for the kind words.
We put a lot of time and effort into the production of the 'Basic Engine Building' DVD.
It's nice to get great feedback.

nice vid, where can i purchase the dvd set at?

i wud lyk to download this video but i dont know how, can u help me...hapi new year
janiesm 3 years ago
The complete 'Basic Engine Building' project is currently only available on DVD. It's three and a half hours long and has a full interactive interface for Glossary Terms and Tool usage through the entire video.
Would be way too large of a download for the average person with an average connection. Plus, the video looks way better on DVD...
In the future we'll work on some shorter download purchasable clips.
BoxWrench 3 years ago
Nice vid, although I was a bit horrified to see the tech beating on the piston with a hammer, A steady & forceful "shove" into the bore is preferable.
hypermite01 3 years ago
That piston install hammer is made of plastic and has dead-soft shot fillings. It's made for beating in pistons on purpose. The particular type of ring compressor we used required solid strikes to the piston for install. There are many other methods to do the same...
No pistons were harmed in the making of this video... : )
BoxWrench 3 years ago
rubber mallet bro...
thats the best way, and every tech I've seen or worked with have done it the same way
Briantino 3 years ago

They say "every engine" multiple times, but never mention rotary engines. I'm assuming this video only touches on piston engines?
hungryhippolw 3 years ago
The clip mentions "any four-cycle engine" which yes, refers to pistons engines. Technically, a rotary engine could be considered a four-cycle engine but really is the exception to the rule...
The 'Basic Engine Building' DVD is about as close as any single video project can get to covering the tools and techniques of an entire group of engine families.
Rotary engines have always been the exception to the four-cycle family. We'd love to see someones efforts in explaining the differences...
BoxWrench 3 years ago
Yeah, it would seem pretty unnecessary to feature any sort of rotary work, seeing as there are so few cars on the road that still use the old Wankels.
Thanks for the info though!
hungryhippolw 3 years ago
Im buying this video right now, you guys are great. Do you have any simple recommendations to increase power in a 76 351w? Like taking the egr valve off or a nice exhaust?
MinuteMaidDrinker 3 years ago
You can do all kinds of top end improvements such as Carb and Intake swaps, even cylinder head or fuel delivery alterations to gain slight increases in power. They will give you nominal gains in power and certainly nothing you will feel by the 'seat of your pants'.
The biggest difference you can make if you actually want to feel the increase in power (as well as easily notice a decrease in fuel economy) will be to change the camshaft.
A cam change is the single most effective power builder.

Thanks!
