I used to work on both A-4s & the last of the S-2s (US-2Bs) in the U.S. Navy. Any old S-2 hands remember the rudder trimmer valves ? Rudder assist sys. ? I also did considerable support work for the H-3.
A government inspector at my old workplace had served in the Bonnie. He told me they tried out A-4 SkyHawks but they were a bit too tricky to land on a carrier that size. One of them slammed down so hard it knocked the undercarriage strut up through the wing!
I don't have any more information other then it must of taken place between 1963 and 1970 based only on sea kings comming into service in'63 and the bonnie being paid off in '70.
@marmaloon My Dad served on the Bonnie from 1957 until 1968 and he has same film footage. This seems to me it was as they crossed the equator party. Would have been sometime mid 60's. My Dad would know but he died over 30 years ago, He would have loved to see this. I need to post his films as they were so clear and amazing
@linda14599 Alas my pop is gone, too. ;( *hugs. He was on le club 22 for quite a while, possibly around the same time as your dad (1957-1965). He got his commission at that point and went on to the DDH's other assignments.
