  • pure genius

  • Dziękuję! Przepięknie! Wielki MK!

  • Interesting i never realised he was playing lead & Rhythmn at the same time. Great to hear thanks.

  • there are 2 guitars.

  • did you get this version from Guitar hero 5 by just choosing bass and drums and not playing them? becouse this version is very alike from GH5 one!

  • @esseaindanaotinha

I say the same thing about 5:21 - 5:33. But then again, I'd say the same thing about the entire solo and every little lick and fill. Decades later and as overplayed as this song was on FM Radio (back before FM radio became worse than AM radio) this song is still underrated. And so is Knopfler.

  • you can even hear him breathing !

  • @looping800 My friend, I'd love to listen to this at work on my iPhone via YouTube but it says 'the author' does not allow playback on iPhone? Is there a reason behind this or is it just not able to play on the iPhone? My thanks to you for taking the time to post it, check my channel for some straits stuff played by me :-) thanks again.

  • @dany4kin I dont know why :-/

  • one of the greatest songs ever written...

  • @esseaindanaotinha very true

  • wow

  • @PetraeKo It still uses a volume pedal. But it goes sometimes volume knob on his guitar because it tends to move it accidentally when he plays

  • I do not understand what all of you are talking about this crossfade crap. mark used an orange squeezer and it has been proven that he is using a Roland Jazz chorus amp in this song.

  • thank you man.....yes it's a dream come true......fantastic...

  • Just found this version. An absolute treasure.

    Simply awesome. No other words.

    Thanks looping800 for posting.;)

  • I had never heard the little echo at 5:09 until today! Wow and what was up with the solo end with the stray string hits or possible punch in at 5:33-5:36. I still love this song as my favorite song ever. Mark is amazing!!! My hero, I play guitar the way I do because of him.

  • i love the beautiful "popping" noise of his guitar

  • Awesome!... Thanks for that, it's a real dream come true!

There are more records like this? What about another songs from the first album?

  • @heljta, I think that is because you can't fingerpick while playing rhythm.

  • @mrengftwThere is no probs with cross- fades alone, there IS some echo, yes, and using volume pedal between licks and rhythm parts CAN create that kind of "double notes in one time" illusion ... BUT, cross- fades i'm referring to got BEND-ing strings in them (listen, CLOSELY, bends @ 21-23 sec, and @1:41-43) on both - third sting is clearly still still highly bended while we can hear rhythm comes in - this is physically big time not possible...because that bended sting will mute everything!

  • @heljta There is no cross fading or volume pedal at work. What is heard are two tracks of a multitrack playing simultaneously. The lead guitar licks are on one track and the rhythm parts on another. Neither track is panned left or right, both are run straight up the center. The lead track however, is up a bit louder than the other.

  • THANK YOU !!

  • maior guitarrista do mundo na minha opiniao

  • 5:00-5:40 = Tears running down both cheeks

  • Great!!! You can also find the original recordings of this song without the lead guitar on Pureselo.com!!!

  • nice job man , and the pictures of early dire straits ...great!!! thank you

  • Excelent, really good to play this song correctly. if u know about a site with tracks like this please tell me :) i'll be thankfull to you !

  • what a beautiful tone thanks for posting looping 800

  • somebody can give a link to it, just in mp3?

  • I'm not sure i understand this correctly.

Those rhythm parts coming in/out every time with way to much fine fade-in effect for this to be single one guitar track recorded by Mark. Also there are some crossfades simply not possible to be played like that on one take.

    Solos are OK though...

  • @heljta You're right.

  • @looping800 Man, where did you take this sound? Can I get some like this? Tnks

  • @fatorrh It comes from the video game Guitar Hero 5.

  • @heljta Agree.... It seems like a fusion of three tracks in one.

  • @heljta I disagree with you totally, I have gone over this a few times to give you the benefit of the doubt and still come up with the same results. It is only one guitar and if you have ever seen mark live like I have when he has been playing solo guitar without backing you will relies this can be done, the rhythm parts in this are done with his thumb index and midex, he lightly brushes the strings with them giving it a kind of light strumming sound that is very hard to achiever.

  • @TheTangentUK Hi, tnx 4 reply. I Did saw Mark live, and i know exactly what do you mean, and i respect your point but that "thumb index and midex" thing still cannot explain some over fades i clearly hear here and there.

  • @heljta I have listened to it again and maybe your right, I do think a guitar player of knopflers standard could get it pretty close to this tho. Wish I could

  • @heljta this guy gives you a very good visual interpretation of how close U can get youtube.com/watch?v=wr-ICmaHkdc&feature=related

  • @heljta I think that the trick is in a volume pedal. Mark is very well known for his masterful use of the swell effect.

  • @heljta He have to stop the rhythm to play the riffs

  • @heljta Wow, always learn so much listening to music like this.

  • This is mindblowing!

  • Beautiful sound! ^^

  • thanks!!my favourite musician really good video:)

  • Wow!

  • WOW FANTASTIC!!!Thank you!!!

  • Grandios!!!!

  • one can hear now that MK is like Hendrix -he plays rhythm and solo parts at the same time, by the way his licks are close to blues ones but modified in his own style and sound, Just amazing!!

  • @ekstradycja Not so sure about that "at the same time" part. There's either a single line fill in/solo or a rhythm part going on, but never simultaneously. Also, you can hear at a few points that the different parts are edited together from several takes.

If you want to hear people playing rhythm and solo at the same time, check out Chet Atkins, Tuck Andress, Tommy Emmanuel and the likes.

  • My friend, Knopfler almost every time plays rhythm and lead together!!! :))

  • tnx for sharing this video ;))

  • wow!!! lo andaba buscando gracias!!

  • Where and how did you get that ?!

  • Mark .....Fantastic!!! with only a guitar!! sorry for my english.....

  • This is a real great help in learning some of those great licks! Where do people find these audio tracks?

  • fantastico!

  • Very nice recording

  • ¡¡¡que bueno!!!

  • cooool :))

  • Thanks ! Have you noticed how his voice has changed over the years ?

  • not that much uh?

  • Wow!!!! Extrem Rare!!!

  • this is just amazing!! where do you get that stuff from? is it the original tape that was used for the song itself?

  • It's the original tape. Voice and guitar were recorded separately, and muxed for the song.

  • Grande!!!!!!
