AMAZING. I didn't even know he was a singer but I love his music. It makes sense to me now that his style is modern and 20th century but has humanism and musicality at its core. Thank you for posting this historic and wonderful piece of music.
The best recorded versions of this splendid piece that I know are by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Thomas Hampson (damn me, I forget the supporting performers). Sam Barber's rendition, however, is well worth a listen! Unlike most vocal-music composers, Barber studied singing. And his fine baritone, as heard here, fully encompassed the demands of his composition. I wish Barber had recorded many more of his superb songs, like "I Hear An Army" and "Sure On This Shining Night" --
It is amazing that he is such an amazing composer and baritone? I read about his singing in a book and thought one or the other must be lacking but NO! Both skills are awesome! Now I don't feel so alone. I do both to, although my composition skills have a ways to go before entering barber-dom! Thanks for letting us hear this.
I like your listening room also, is that your job office or at home? Neat.
Yes, his voice was a pleasant surprize. Its my listening room at home which has great acoustics. The 10,000+ 78s are in their own room. Usually I use a 1927 phono for posting but this record is too rare to be exposed to that.
I responded to your comment before I saw the 2nd one. Apparently it is quite rare. I believe I bought it at a library sale here in Richmond, VA. Back in the 1970's many major libraries were dumping there 78's. I got a huge number from the University of VA library.
que preciosa voz! muy expresiva!
gracias por subir esto! (thanks for upload this!)

@KozenaFan I don't know of a Nonesuch reissue; could you be thinking of the LP on the New World label? Pearl has issued it on CD.

This was reissued on LP on the Nonesuch label over 30 years ago. I wonder if it has made it to CD?

@stevevandien Fischer-Dieskau and the Julliard Quartet; Hampson and the Emerson Quartet. Thomas Allen, Marilyn Horne, et al have also recorded it.

Thanks much for the info:). Didn't know about Horne and Allen recording it as well --

Highly interesting to hear not only Barber's skill as a composer, but also as a performer. He appears to be a wonderful baritone.
