US Military can accomplish the same objective without using these weapons. Being Military professionals we have to ask, are we using the wrong application of resources to accomplish our objective? If our objective is strictly revenge. That is, to retaliate for a wrong done to us. Why not eradicate the entire population. Where do we draw the line. It is an over application of resources which have a lasting negative effect that is not necessary.

@dklein2008 While handling U-238 is safe, breathing in particles is highly dangerous. When ammunition hits a target, of course it's going to create dust. The radiation is highly ionising (alpha-decay) and therefore does serious damage to genes and tissue on the molecular level. That is why your comment is ridiculous.

Du tank rounds are not overkill An allied tank was hit on the glacius plate by a iraq DU round from long range and it stuck in the armour and did not go all the way through. Aircraft need DU rounds to penatrate tank top and sides with their 30mmm rounds. The US navy got rid of their DU rounds they said it was because when their fireing 30mm Du rounds at incoming aircraft theirs would be radioacive dust raining down on all the fleet ships.

Uhhh... they were not bullets that were fired in the war that were DU. Also...the dust is from the gunpowder... not the round of ammunition. At least... if you are using the right loads and not ruining your guns.

Regular bullets don't use DU. Armor piercing rounds use a steel or tungsten core.

The only rounds to usually use it are large caliber bullets often used on vehicles or aircraft, and tank shells. There are DU bullets that can be used with small arms, but they are uncommon.

DU, or u238 doesn't emit harmful radiation, at normal temperature, just when it's red hot or molten so, the radiation is emited when the tip of a du round hits a hard target (steel, rock..) and heats, but when it cools, no more dangerous radiation. the radiation emited by the cold DU can be stoped even by a lair of paint.
