few days ago someone I know said Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 is silly compared to Transformers: Dark of the Moon... guess what, A+! and what Richard gave to Transformers? D! In your face!
i'll just say i watched this movie literally with my jaws open and eyes glued to the movie screen. im not even exagerating it, such a deserving, and great final movie in this franchise that i grew up with.
@ToyStoryStarWarsFan you should feel sorry for snape for being bullied by james & sirius & having such a bad childhood. as a child james was arrogant & in general a bit of a douche. harry reminded snape of james so snape saw 'what he expected to see' & thought harry was the same. Snape was a bitter man and treated all the kids horribly, especially harry. But he still continued to protect him & thought it was wrong when dumbledore told snape that they were raising him like a pig for slaughter
@ToyStoryStarWarsFan Thats why I love Snape, because he protected Harry for Lily, so I don't see why people call him selfish. And I don't think you can use how mean he was to harry against him, he was supposed to be a double agent and DUMBLEDORE TOLD HIM to act that way and to give draco support.
@40Pacino Ralph Fiennes, the guy who plays Voldemort - worthy of an Oscar?.... that was the most hilarious so-called "statement" I have ever heard in my entire life. You got to be joking. The most goofy and bland villain performance in movie history - and you think it deserves an Oscar? Uhm..... sure. And the actress of Ginny Weasley knows how to act.
Just saw it. Fantastic. I got hooked on the Harry Potter series recently after being a skeptic for quite a while. This was by far the best one. They finished it so well. I hope this gets oscar recognition.
40Pacino: Yes, Snape was "Always" Good, and they show that very well in this movie since he was protecting the Potters before they died while Harry was just a little baby.
@silverinkpot7 false, when snape got out of hogwarts he became a death eater, then when he found out voldemort was targeting lily & harry, he turned sides so dumbledore would hide the potters, then from there he was good
Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows ended up being amazing! My younger brother and I just saw it leaked online. We found it on watch harry potter. us (w/out the spaces)
@sixpointneuf True, but there has been a whole "Scoundrel or saint" debate amongst Harry Potter fans. Believe it or not, some people actually think that in the end, Snape was still kind of an asshole
@hello10577 Some people argue that Snape still thought that Voldemort had the right idea and only changed sides because of Lily, so they aren't willing to look past that. I also called him a villain because I know of alot of people who hadn't read the books and still though he was bad. I called him a villain because I didn't want to spoil too much but I wanted to give my two cents about it. Plus, he just had a villainous nature throughout the series.
we seen the movie at midnight and absolutley adored it yeah sure they cut out some parts from the book and made it a little bit different but it was on of the best movies we ever seen it was a masterpiece, terrific, touching, and had many reasons to be seen over and over again harry potter will live on forever LONG LIVE HARRY POTTER!!!
@needles94 chould be true but i have never seen harry potter opening day just becouse what is the point i loved part 1 the rest kinda sucked i am just saying part 1 and blood one was the best in the harry potter films
Its surprising how many people hold the first two movies in such high regard simply because they were the most faithful. The Chris Columbus films were definitely the most poorly made in my opinion. Far too lighthearted, had a score that detracted from the movie simply from being so intrusive, and the Cinematogrophy was badly done. There was almost no editing at all (i was surprised they even had a deleted scenes section). Thank god for Alfonso Cuoron
It still is, and certainly feels like, only half a film.
That is its greatest flaw.
It dives so fast into its final confrontation that it doesn't attain the payoff one expects - as there is no build up in this film, but rather in the previous.
I did not see any justification for the split. It should have been just one film, three hours if necessary
If Yates had given 'The Half Blood Prince' the treatment it deserved, and properly set up the finale as the book did, then there'd be no issues
Thanks Richard. Incredible review Wow!! The last movie that I know of that you gave an A+ was Inception which was WB's July movie last year! Now I can't wait for my midnight showing!!
TOTALLY agree!!! Rickman deserves a supporting actor nomination if not a win. We see many sides of Snape in this one and he played it pitch perfectly. He really did the character justice.
I think this is only the second A+ he's given this year. The other movie, if I recall correctly, that he gave an A+ to was Jodie Foster's The Beaver. Looking forward to it. The Harry Potter movies are not as good as The Lord of the Rings, but I've enjoyed them and this does indeed look like a great finale.
@gamer46ful It's defenally gonna get nomations for Supporting Actor for Alan Rickman, Visual Effects, Art Direction, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, Director (David Yates), Film Editing, Cinematogory, and Best Picture (WIN).
@gamer46ful Our local University bought out 2 theatres in our Studio 10 cinema and sold tickets to alumni for a screening at 7 before anyone else. We left and walked past all the people lining up for the midnight showing. It was epic.
@gamer46ful It wont, but it probaly will get a bunch of small awards, like: Make-up, special effects, sound editing, maybe cinematography, music and so on. If we are lucky and a few good actors are in the fall movies we can hope for a suporting actor for Rickman. The academy does really respect Harry Potter that much! By the rare chance it will get a best picture nom, its probaly because the academy is desperate for more viewers.
2:11 you can see Crabbe is not with Malfoy after the actor got in trouble for having drugs in his house. I guess that means Crabbe survives in this movie.....yay?
@Moviewhiz1 It's not a gimmick. It was a smart move on the part of the filmmakers to do the final story the best justice possible. It was either this, or sit through an almost 4 hour movie.
@IamSnoogans They could have easily condensed it into a three hour film. And I personally think they should have.
Neither film can stand on its own as they both feel like half of a film. As well as that, because of the split, the final film jumps so fast into the final confrontation that it doesn't quite attain that payoff-feel.
@Damon242 If they would've left one single thing out of Hallows pt. 1, then it wouldn't have worked. Both films need to be as long as they are to fully tell the story. Also, I thought pt. 1 did a tremendous job of setting up pt. 2 and that it stood well enough on it's own as a the best of all the movies thus far.
@IamSnoogans This is clearly going to be a subjective thing.
But the fact remains that the two films are halves of each other and therefore neither can stand on its own.
The novel itself is not one of the largest, and it has less information than its predecessor. Yates failed to properly adapt 'The Half Blood Prince' to serve as a set up for the finale (he even failed to explore the half blood prince character, fundamental to the final book).
@IamSnoogans Part 1 appears to be intended to showcase their desperation, however, it also meanders. That same intention could have easily been condensed to the first half of the film, much like it is in the novel.
With the build up and payoff in the same film it would have been a much more powerful picture, but as it stands both cannot be fully captured without being seen together - and tiresome task, and therefore it becomes a five hour feature.
@IamSnoogans The Deathly Hallows novel works in three acts, much like a film does. For near to ten years each book in the series has been made to film, so why split the last?
Synonymous with my point, the final novel in the lord of the rings series is twice the size of Deathly Hallows and also spends the first half establishing the desperation of its characters. The film does the same but also adds every other content all within a neat, three hour package. And it was a stronger film for it.
@Damon242 Ah, but you are forgetting that more than half of the audience for the Harry Potter movies are younger kids and their parents. That audience wouldn't be as forgiving of a 3 hour+ movie as the audience for the Lord of the Rings films was. Also, when the DVD comes out, both parts can be watched as one glorious finale, so it won't really matter anymore.
@IamSnoogans The average length of a Harry Potter film is near to two and a half hours (the audience should already know this after a decade of them).
The final film is also not targeted at kids, as it just barely afford its pg-13 censorship rating.
And the DVDs would share the same issue I mentioned previously, that it would become a combined film with a running time of more than five hours.
@Damon242 Actually, if you combine the running times of Deathly Hallows pt.1 & 2, it comes out to roughly 4hr. and 40min. Pt. 1 was 2 1/2 hr. and Pt. 2 is 2hr. 10min.
@Damon242 Well, after having read the book twice and seen pt. 1 five times, I couldn't find a single scene in that movie that was not essential to telling the story. If they would've cut the movie any shorter then it would be less fulfilling. By having the movie expanded into two parts we are able to have the best possible sendoff of this long, beloved franchise and have it go down as one of the great moments in cinematic history. The way it should be.
@IamSnoogans How is it a great moment in cinematic history?
I have read the books and watched all the films multiple times, including part 1 of the final chapter. I do not agree that it is the best possible sendoff, and the franchise has suffered for a very long time.
@IamSnoogans One thing that isn't subjective is that I have read across the internet and talked to people who have seen the film and who haven't read the books, and they were simultaneously entertained and confused. I have been told by them that the film was worth the money, unlike the first half - which is probably the most divisive of the franchise, but they didn't fully understand exactly what transpired.
As someone who has read the books, I automatically filled in the blanks.
@Damon242 i completely agree with you about cutting it in half. I just got back from watching pt. 2 and I was thoroughly underwhelmed. I did enjoy the movie a great deal, and even though I have read all the books, I still found myself a little lost at times wondering what certain things were being referrenced and such. I personally would have loved it to be about 3 to 3 1/2 hours long in order to get the build up and the conclusion all in one film, but none the less, it was a good movie.
@Hreinn91 you havent even seen the film yet. unless u got into an early screening or something. otherwise, you have no say in whether it has done the novel justice or not. also, what you must realize is how difficult it is to condense such massive story lines and characters all into 2 1/2 hours (or in part 2's case, roughly 2) you simply must consider the book franchise and film franchise as two different things, because they are different formats of th same amazing story.
@Hreinn91 Yeah it changed stuff. I was so mad when the cut out Dumbledore's storyline -i hit my sister so hard- other than that, i was happy. Cryingat -[insert spoiler here] death. I love how they made [insert kind crazy characther here] and [brave characther here] in love, so sweet.
@Hreinn91 well the ending was horrible. the way harry killed voldemort. it was horribly anti-climatic. and the years later thing for so sappy and cheesy.
@eddieyyy3 That's a pretty odd statement. You really think people would just accept a film, an adaptation, as being terrible just because it is? Or would you expect them to be protesting as to how those behind its production could have got it so wrong?
@Hreinn91 I agree. Personally, I feel only the second film did justice to its source material.
'Half Blood Prince' was atrociously dealt with. It was not nearly as informative or as investing as the book was (which the film should have been), and the writers seemed to emphasize more on the romantic relationships rather than the plot and mythology.
Examples: Fenrir Greyback (actually present in the film, but unexplained - a rather dumbfounding move), the inferi (no explanation for them at all)
@Isle0fRed no your wrong. at least your reading it wrong. it states "All eligible motion pictures, unless otherwise noted, must be:"... "c. for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County" it means harry potter has to be playing in any commercial theater in the LA county where have to buy a ticket to go see the film. Unless im missing something. Simple basic understanding will state I'm right.
@gamecrazy132 i dont know what soure your using however your wrong.
2.A motion picture first theatrically exhibited inside the U.S. prior to the Los Angeles County qualifying run shall be eligible for submission provided the prior exhibition takes place in a commercial motion picture theater after January 1, 2010, and that no other form of public exhibition occurs through the completion of its Los Angeles County qualifying run (previews and festivals excluded).
@Isle0fRed what source are you using? the source im using is from rule #2 Eligibility, directly from the Academy website. here have a look: oscars(.)org/awards/academyawards/rules/rule02(.)html
@Isle0fRed you clearly have not read #3 in rule 3 which states "a. the film may not be exhibited publicly in any nontheatrical form for a 90-day period following the commencement of its initial theatrical engagement"
Harry Potter might be "The Wizard of Oz" of our time, but "Star Wars" is the Renaissance of filmmaking.

That's big overstatement to call the first Harry Potter film "The "Wizard Of OZ" of our generation when it's probably the worst in the entire series.

2:11 you can see Crabbe is not with Malfoy after the actor got in trouble for having drugs in his house. I guess that means Crabbe survives in this movie.....yay?

Gotta love the part one/part two money gimmick.
Moviewhiz1 7 months ago
@Moviewhiz1 yeah but a good money gimmick
fastmuffins 7 months ago
@Moviewhiz1 It's not a gimmick. It was a smart move on the part of the filmmakers to do the final story the best justice possible. It was either this, or sit through an almost 4 hour movie.
IamSnoogans 7 months ago
@IamSnoogans They could have easily condensed it into a three hour film. And I personally think they should have.
Neither film can stand on its own as they both feel like half of a film. As well as that, because of the split, the final film jumps so fast into the final confrontation that it doesn't quite attain that payoff-feel.
Damon242 7 months ago
@Damon242 If they would've left one single thing out of Hallows pt. 1, then it wouldn't have worked. Both films need to be as long as they are to fully tell the story. Also, I thought pt. 1 did a tremendous job of setting up pt. 2 and that it stood well enough on it's own as a the best of all the movies thus far.
IamSnoogans 7 months ago
@IamSnoogans This is clearly going to be a subjective thing.
But the fact remains that the two films are halves of each other and therefore neither can stand on its own.
The novel itself is not one of the largest, and it has less information than its predecessor. Yates failed to properly adapt 'The Half Blood Prince' to serve as a set up for the finale (he even failed to explore the half blood prince character, fundamental to the final book).
Damon242 7 months ago
@IamSnoogans Part 1 appears to be intended to showcase their desperation, however, it also meanders. That same intention could have easily been condensed to the first half of the film, much like it is in the novel.
With the build up and payoff in the same film it would have been a much more powerful picture, but as it stands both cannot be fully captured without being seen together - and tiresome task, and therefore it becomes a five hour feature.
Damon242 7 months ago
@IamSnoogans The Deathly Hallows novel works in three acts, much like a film does. For near to ten years each book in the series has been made to film, so why split the last?
Synonymous with my point, the final novel in the lord of the rings series is twice the size of Deathly Hallows and also spends the first half establishing the desperation of its characters. The film does the same but also adds every other content all within a neat, three hour package. And it was a stronger film for it.
Damon242 7 months ago
@Damon242 Ah, but you are forgetting that more than half of the audience for the Harry Potter movies are younger kids and their parents. That audience wouldn't be as forgiving of a 3 hour+ movie as the audience for the Lord of the Rings films was. Also, when the DVD comes out, both parts can be watched as one glorious finale, so it won't really matter anymore.
IamSnoogans 7 months ago
@IamSnoogans The average length of a Harry Potter film is near to two and a half hours (the audience should already know this after a decade of them).
The final film is also not targeted at kids, as it just barely afford its pg-13 censorship rating.
And the DVDs would share the same issue I mentioned previously, that it would become a combined film with a running time of more than five hours.
Damon242 7 months ago
@Damon242 Actually, if you combine the running times of Deathly Hallows pt.1 & 2, it comes out to roughly 4hr. and 40min. Pt. 1 was 2 1/2 hr. and Pt. 2 is 2hr. 10min.
IamSnoogans 7 months ago
@IamSnoogans My point still remains then.
How hard would it have been to slash an hour and forty minutes off of the film, and render it at three hours.
Damon242 7 months ago
@Damon242 Well, after having read the book twice and seen pt. 1 five times, I couldn't find a single scene in that movie that was not essential to telling the story. If they would've cut the movie any shorter then it would be less fulfilling. By having the movie expanded into two parts we are able to have the best possible sendoff of this long, beloved franchise and have it go down as one of the great moments in cinematic history. The way it should be.
IamSnoogans 7 months ago
@IamSnoogans How is it a great moment in cinematic history?
I have read the books and watched all the films multiple times, including part 1 of the final chapter. I do not agree that it is the best possible sendoff, and the franchise has suffered for a very long time.
What you have said is entirely subjective.
Damon242 7 months ago
@IamSnoogans One thing that isn't subjective is that I have read across the internet and talked to people who have seen the film and who haven't read the books, and they were simultaneously entertained and confused. I have been told by them that the film was worth the money, unlike the first half - which is probably the most divisive of the franchise, but they didn't fully understand exactly what transpired.
As someone who has read the books, I automatically filled in the blanks.
Damon242 7 months ago
@IamSnoogans Had this been done properly, and "the way it should['ve] been", then this response would not be so common.
Breaking the story in two and driving years between the sixth and closing film was a bad decision on behalf of non-readers.
It was as Moviewhiz1 originally said; a money-making gimmick.
Damon242 7 months ago
@Damon242 i completely agree with you about cutting it in half. I just got back from watching pt. 2 and I was thoroughly underwhelmed. I did enjoy the movie a great deal, and even though I have read all the books, I still found myself a little lost at times wondering what certain things were being referrenced and such. I personally would have loved it to be about 3 to 3 1/2 hours long in order to get the build up and the conclusion all in one film, but none the less, it was a good movie.

didnt do the book justice and no critic seems to realize that. Am I wrong or does someone agree with me? :S
Hreinn91 7 months ago
@Hreinn91 you havent even seen the film yet. unless u got into an early screening or something. otherwise, you have no say in whether it has done the novel justice or not. also, what you must realize is how difficult it is to condense such massive story lines and characters all into 2 1/2 hours (or in part 2's case, roughly 2) you simply must consider the book franchise and film franchise as two different things, because they are different formats of th same amazing story.
actingzach 7 months ago
@Hreinn91 Yeah it changed stuff. I was so mad when the cut out Dumbledore's storyline -i hit my sister so hard- other than that, i was happy. Cryingat -[insert spoiler here] death. I love how they made [insert kind crazy characther here] and [brave characther here] in love, so sweet.

@Hreinn91 You are wrong. I saw it and it does the book justice.
vaporage 7 months ago
@vaporage I saw it, and it both does and doesn't give the novel justice. Yates' Potter films always seem to put emphasis on the wrong things.
Damon242 7 months ago
@Hreinn91 what is there to do justice to? I'm pretty sure the movie will fix the several problems the book had.
legoindyshortround 7 months ago
@legoindyshortround The book was flawless imo O.o
Hreinn91 7 months ago
@Hreinn91 well the ending was horrible. the way harry killed voldemort. it was horribly anti-climatic. and the years later thing for so sappy and cheesy.
legoindyshortround 7 months ago
@legoindyshortround and the years later thing "was" so sappy and cheesy.
legoindyshortround 7 months ago
@Hreinn91 Most people like to accept the film for what it is, not for what it should've been.
eddieyyy3 7 months ago
@eddieyyy3 That's a pretty odd statement. You really think people would just accept a film, an adaptation, as being terrible just because it is? Or would you expect them to be protesting as to how those behind its production could have got it so wrong?
Damon242 7 months ago
@Hreinn91 I agree. Personally, I feel only the second film did justice to its source material.
'Half Blood Prince' was atrociously dealt with. It was not nearly as informative or as investing as the book was (which the film should have been), and the writers seemed to emphasize more on the romantic relationships rather than the plot and mythology.
Examples: Fenrir Greyback (actually present in the film, but unexplained - a rather dumbfounding move), the inferi (no explanation for them at all)

sadly, this film wont be nominated by the academy as this film never premered in LA. That said, oscars don't really mean much asides from gloating

@Isle0fRed just because it never premiered in LA doesn't mean wont get nominated
gamecrazy132 7 months ago
@gamecrazy132 It goes against the academy rules. Simple basic research will state I'm right.
Isle0fRed 7 months ago
@Isle0fRed no your wrong. at least your reading it wrong. it states "All eligible motion pictures, unless otherwise noted, must be:"... "c. for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County" it means harry potter has to be playing in any commercial theater in the LA county where have to buy a ticket to go see the film. Unless im missing something. Simple basic understanding will state I'm right.
gamecrazy132 7 months ago
@gamecrazy132 i dont know what soure your using however your wrong.
2.A motion picture first theatrically exhibited inside the U.S. prior to the Los Angeles County qualifying run shall be eligible for submission provided the prior exhibition takes place in a commercial motion picture theater after January 1, 2010, and that no other form of public exhibition occurs through the completion of its Los Angeles County qualifying run (previews and festivals excluded).
Isle0fRed 7 months ago
@Isle0fRed what source are you using? the source im using is from rule #2 Eligibility, directly from the Academy website. here have a look: oscars(.)org/awards/academyawards/rules/rule02(.)html
gamecrazy132 7 months ago
@gamecrazy132 i use the academy own site. Guidelines mention the film must comply under rules 2 and 3. You clearly have not read rule 3.
'1.Eligibility for Academy Awards consideration is subject to Rules Two and Three.' Taken from your own link.
Isle0fRed 7 months ago
@Isle0fRed you clearly have not read #3 in rule 3 which states "a. the film may not be exhibited publicly in any nontheatrical form for a 90-day period following the commencement of its initial theatrical engagement"
gamecrazy132 7 months ago
@Isle0fRed so im right, your wrong, and Harry Potter has a chance at the oscars
gamecrazy132 7 months ago
@Isle0fRed and from the looks of it Harry Potter is showing in almost all of the LA county theaters
