I think it's great that he stated his sexuality and that he's a guy, actually. A lot of people assume only lesbians and feminists listen to Ani DiFranco, I think he was making a statement that anyone can gain from listening to the amazing music Ani makes, and that it reaches the heart of anyone, not just the stereotype people try to present her as.
