I used two simple spotlights. The scene being a valley covers up that fact a bit by making it look like theres only small parts where the sunlight can get through to the ground. So I was basically trying to make a virtue out of necessity. Unfortunately that doesn't work with any kind of scene. Wish we finally had parallel sunlight shadows.
I love your scenery man! It seriously looks like Skyrim, imagine this was in 2010!
(about the outdoor shadows)....And the shadows created by the spotlight are all baked? Man, I can't imagine UV unwrapping and texturing all that, oh my god! XD
By the way, do you use blender for texturing/normalmapping/baking or other programs?
Thanks. And nothing is baked, that's why I used spotlights. As for texturemapping, I also use Shadermap Pro (which is about 20€, there's a free version, too) and/or Insane Bump (which is not Crazy Bump).
Using Blender, yes. I've abandoned this particular project quite a while ago, though. Maybe when there's an easy solution to import meshes to Skyrim I'm more at it again. Until then it's Minecraft and drawing practice (for which I find Blender pretty helpful for perspective checking).
Actually I didn't really create anything apart from the assets. To everyone interested: There's a bunch of mouselook scripts on blenderartists. I recommend you go there first and just have a look at the Game Engine Resources corner.
Thanks but no. Creating a scene that remotely resembles Crysis isn't actually that hard if you don't care too much about performance since you've got only one scene, not a level with gameplay and the more fancy techy stuff the Cryengine offers.
is this a game or animation? like are you using arrows to move or did u animate camera? If its a game, its awsome! no lag lol, im new to this Screen space ambient occulision rendering technique :P great job!
Well, it's realtime and I did steer it with WASD+mouse but it's also not really a game. It did get somewhat slower after I was experimenting with adding more game elements. So actually it could be called a proto game demo.
And don't forget that I only adapted the SSAO script. It's not mine.
Btw, when I was young, back in the days, we called lag a "slowdown" and our "lag" meant problems with internet latency. ;p
Can't say, really. I didn't have a plan, it was more just doing this thing, than that, and eventually putting it together, always trying out stuff. Spent a few hours a day for several month with long pauses doing nothing in between.
As for a link, nah, it's too unoptimized. Actually it's made of only three (or so) assets. What makes them stand out are the python scripts, really. So, I think it's better to check them out and start playing around a little.
Really great graphics. Beautiful rocks and trees. You should make something out of this - with 2.5, the BGE is a bit faster. Maybe you can squeeze some gameplay into it.
damnn, i really suck at graphics, but im making a fps (for fun) and im also learning python to make it easier. the only scripts i have are for mouselook, and bulletholes(using rays). but ive managed to figure out enough logic on my own to make basic enemy AI, ammo with reloading(very difficult, at least without python, but certainly doable) i just wish i even have decent animations, i just wish i could make graphics like that.
This is the best work i have seen in Blender Gameengine. I developed much in this way but this is awsome. So i hope you can see that i know what is really good, you can look at my profile so that you can get a imagination of it.
@Necry3d yeah dude, would like to know the same thing.
Also your system specs and about the textures (use of normal maps) and poly count of the scene.... it maybe a little bit for asking... but i have nothing to loose :P
Aside questions. HOLLY CRAP THATS FREAKING AMAZING. BGE keeps amazing me every day throught the talent of people like you. Cheers up.
In the editing buttons tab there's a panel called "texture face" when in editing mode. The model has to be unwrapped, though, to make the panel appear.
There you'll have a button called "Twoside" under "Active Face Mode", which you have to push. If it doesn't work, make sure you select every face in editing mode a click on the "copy" button in the panel.
Depends. I don't think I'd get a much higher framerate if I cut down on the 2 spotlights as it's quite high already. On slower rigs or on bigger scenes it will make a difference, of course, or if you want to have "real" parallel sunlight.
Baking AO would make it run smoother on slower PCs, too, but it'd require more tweaking and wouldn't be as cool as real time SSAO. ;)
Really awesome work, I was thinking the other day how you never see very many landscapes, iff ever you decide to release that to the general public I want to be the first to know. Awesome work.
Yep. I was wondering the same. There are so many great tutorials out there but noone ever seems to use them to put together something more than a rock or a tree at a time.
@SachielMF I'm wanting to start a landscaping campaign soon, to bring more landscapes to BA, I'm going to start by making tutorials of how I make mine, then I hope to learn more from comments by other people.
I get around 60 FPS. Small drops now and then but pretty smooth still. There's only one script for camera movement active, though, so every script more sophisticated would probably slow down the scene more.
man really looks awesome =)

Buy Crysis, use Sandbox Editor, create maps, tinker around endlessly, waste time, post about it in Youtube comments.

@SachielMF Or, you can download the cryengine 3 sdk for free and not need to get any of their games.

True. When I wrote that comment Sandbox 3 SDK hadn't released. Great tool to play around with. As is the case with the UDK.

how did you get shadows in the game engine it looks very good

Apart from one non-shadowing hemilight it's just two spotlights with buffered shadows for the sunnier parts.
