I'm a Red fan and this sketch (show) just doesn't seem like the old Red stuff. Timing a bit off maybe? Not really funny either. I wouldn't say this is one of his better.
This was Red's short-lived half-hour show on NBC, Monday at 7:30, right before Laugh-In, which was past its prime. Red, Jackie Gleason and some other popular shows were purged from the CBS line-up because they attracted older viewers. NBC gave Red a shot, and it was nice to see Red in NBC color, which was always better than CBS's. But there is a slapdash, careless quality here, as if Red had already given up. Red never forgave CBS, and would trash its execs whenever he could.
@rockabilly235 From what I remember seeing on a bio, when Cass did the Carol Bernett Show, when the sketch was over, Cass would be in her dressing room in tears because of the jokes. It's really a shame the fun they made about big people back then.
A San Fernando Red sketch I loved was when he played the ultimate politician. He dressed in all white like Colonel Sanders, and would show up uninvited, wherever there was a gathering of people such as a picnic, just before an election. He would take center stage and give a talk with a southern accent: My friends, and dont you tell me you aint my friends, my friends! :)
Poor Cass. The whole sketch made fun of her being heavy and an old maid desperate for marriage.

Mama Cass was such a talented and beautiful woman who always suffered the fat jokes. Surprising that such a man as Red would be one of those.

Martha Raye was a big girl in those days and no one made fun of her; she could make fun of herself and not get her "feelings" hurt.

@keatsfoxlore7 Martha Raye??? I didn't see her. The big lady was Mama Cass Elliot. The Mamas and the Papas

@keatsfoxlore7 Martha Ray is not in this video. It's Mama Cass Elliot.

Cussing in the comment box about a Red Skelton sketch is really a low-life way to go.

Wonder if Cass Elliot really enjoyed all the jokes at her expense...

@kznte back then? im not sure if "we" are nicer to big people today.... so many categories by which some make fun of others.... yes... sad

@rockabilly235 no. but she had a huge tax bill, very little money from royalties, and she needed the dough. Especially being a single parent.
