This is an ode to the great Jaco Pastorius. A great improvisational bass guitarist. If you don't know him, copy and paste his name and you will see. Now, as you know, Mr. Davis rarely gives credit to a player. But in austere sound he gives credit to this underdog jazz great.
@TannerOlivas yes Kenny Garret on straight alto - and ( oh God forgive me) Davis at his nadir... I dislike this music now as I disliked it when he was alive. I can appreciate it in an abstract way ( it's valid and interesting under a lot of point of view), but listening to it's a pain for me.
@yourockets3 do you not like this era miles, or not like the other players? you could say kenny's solo might have been a little more daring in certain areas, (where there seem to be those standard descending fills of hesitation), if he was in the zone, but overall it is a very refined sound, and he is probably the greatest sax player in the modern era, along with branford marsalis. for me, the greatest players of all time are miles, trane, herbie...
@BodhiSvaha I don't like the "style", the sound of this group. i hate those keyboards, and dislike both harmony and melody and feel far from this idea of "refined" sound - Kenny Garrett is a fine musician a bit too conventional to my taste and all of them are as good as him - it's good music far from my taste. I prefer Miles' work from 1963 up to Bitches Brew and Liveevil. but I'm an Ornette addicted and this is my point of view :)
@yourockets3 lol ;). what about eric? who would you say are the absolute greatest free jazzers, say the top 10, any instruments included? i love braxton and dolphy, and have only heard very little of coleman, but what i have heard i like. extremely advanced.
i think for this group, it is more about mood than any other aspect. that is why i think miles is the greatest musician of all time, by far. he evokes more feeling out of this trumpet than anyone else (aside from singers).
@yourockets3 i feel that wayne shorter is the greatest living saxophonist, because he seems to sense about perfectly when to pause, especially so, how to shape the mood effortlessly, unwind the infinite in the most natural way possible.
i think porgy and bess, quiet nights, and of course kind of blue are among his best works. i love in a silent way, bitches brew, and the 70s albums. decoy, star people, aura, you're under arrest, tutu, siesta, and amandla are all great. some incredible songs.
@yourockets3 also, for a song like this one in particular, it's not about playing as fast or as complicated as you can. it's almost as lazily as you can, like it melts away into the melody. the whole feeling of it is impossible without the keyboards. that sets the mood entirely. i think this is modern jazz the way it was meant to be. it captivates you, outside all knowledge or expectation of jazz...it is like looking at a breathtaking panorama in front of you. awe inspiring.
Anyone else notice that Garrett gives Miles a signal at 1:27, and a few seconds later Miles plays two notes in the middle of Garrett's solo? The notes sound as if they were coming from Garrett's horn. I'm just amazed that they would work out something so easily passed by beforehand! Also the squeal at 4:08 is worked out as well...crazy.
@keepjammin36 .... man, you have entirely too much time on your hands... lol! That is a great catch .. thanks for pointing it out. These men are Superior professionals so ya kinda expect that and more...thanks again!
i went to marcus miller for Tutu revisited at the London Barbican! Truly Miles should have been a Jamaican.......he never overplays a note & he pulls us up short. if the US does not want him...... we'll take him in the Jamaican national heroes park where he can be venerated by peoples of african origin who love him alongside the honourable Robert Nesta Marley.......this is awe inspiring music
Bravissimoo!!!!!! What a bassline by Mr. Marcus Miller and what a solo by Mr. Kenny Garret and what a genius by Mr. Miles Davis!! This is a true masterpeace!!!
I didn't know they did straight alto's, I'm not sure if I'm just excited as it's the first time i have seen one or if it really does produce a different sound. I love it all the same.
Wonderful! Miles smiles and plays his heart out. The group knows they are playing with jazz hierarchy and history and meet the challenge. Was that Chick on keyboards? Oh, look, 4 people accidentally hilt the 'thumbs down' key by mistake.
@Aztec1011 Its a straight alto they project more I resist saying better. If you compare his sound to a soprano and say David Sanborn you might get a feel for how it changes the sound... hes a great player but I like the curved bell... It my be worth noticing Kenny Garrett plays a curves sax more then not
what style is this. i looked in some cool jazz artists stuff like chet baker and dave brubeck, but couldn't find anything like it. i know theres a style that encompasses this exact sound.
The majority of Brubeck and Baker's output was long before this, this is probably late 80's. Many jazz musicians started utilizing electric instruments such as the electric bass and synthesizers such as in this video. So if you like this just look for jazz from the late 70's through the 80's
and my marriage, after 5 weeks, was consummated; he was playing Mr. P in the last set which we heard outside; when we arrived...by the time we dared to enter, the place was empty. Little did I know I had a black eye and my nose was broken when he said, 'Hey, HAIG AND HAIG!
There are moments tucked deep in the pockets of places long forgotten, hidden in the wonder of what was once a place called "heaven" and then they evaporated and disappeared into the rare toxic ether of a glass of milk gone sour, yet, here I am 50 years, actually 49, thinking of that sweet black man, Miles Davis, who gave US the key to his room at The Black Hawk Hotel ...

BTW, listing the five wrong things about Marcus Miller in this video:
- playing a Fodera bass, instead of a JB;
- long hair;
- no hat;
- long sleeves;
- no slapping.
Who the hell is that guy and what did he do to Marcus Miller?
Just kidding, he's amazing!
Cheers, folks!
