Nice story Maytag, not quite the way I remember it. When the bear finally did stick his head in the shelter at 2 am, I awoke to look him in the eye from only 6' away. I then told him in my best Louisiana accent to "Go on git, we don't want no bear a'round here". As I recall this did the trick & he left for Walnut Shelter which he then robbed. Bear Bait Dave slept through the whole thing on the ground in front of me & his tent only had a small rip in it. Too bad it scared Coach into going home.
@yukonroan Good eye! Maytag tried to accurately label all of his photos from the trail but might have mistaken this one. We should also mention that some of the photos are real and some are re-creations. From his account, the bear/cub visits not only this shelter but the next shelter that's about 5 miles north.
@yukonroan Max Patch/Walnut Mtn was the coldest day of my 2010 thruhike because of strong windchill. Fortunately a hiker had a wind tarp already up on the front of the Walnut shelter when I arrived late that night. I was more worried about frostbite than bearbite then haha--never heard about the bear, but I already had two close encounters in Smokey Mtn Nat'l park so they didn't spook me anymore after that.
@kookiemoose Thanks, Kookiemoose! Nice that you had a friend with you on the trail.
On another night at this shelter, the bear just circled camp and didn't bother any of the occupants in the 3 tents that were set up, but the bear scared a poor hiker that was sleeping by himself in the shelter.
Hey Maytag! I just found the video, great job! I have told this story many times...best wishes,
Coach

Great story. I was fortunate enough to have a dog with me during all of my thru hikes, and she'd run them off. To bad about the tent.
