Nice tie and instructional video, but Fayettenam is correct, this is not a Blood Dot as tied by Jeff Blood. Looks more like a Glo Bug to me. Glo Bugs are typically more dense, whereas the Blood Dot is tied more sparse to give the translucent effect of the egg. More sparsely tied eggs will help to get them down, and they're much easier to sinch the yarn or McFly Foam down. I find that McFly Foam makes a better Glo Bug, but for Blood Dots, I prefer egg yarn.
@TribKid The Blood Dot is a pattern originated by Jeff Blood. It consists of three loops of yarn on the hook shank with a clump of contrasting yarn between the 2nd and 3rd loop.
Some people are saying use wire. that is a bad idea. the eggs in real life float and get churned up in the current they dont sink like a rock. add a split shot. and also i have found glo bug yarn makes a better egg than mc fly foam.
Only problem I have with this pattern is how hard it is to get the fly sinking, there just too much material. I use the method just tying three strands on the top, this seems to let the fly get down alot better.
Ive found it impossible to secure three stacks of mcfly foam down . It's tough with floss or big fly thread because its always slidding around, I usaully go to 2 strands of fly foam and a 3/0 uni thread. But we all have our preferences

If you want the fly to sink easier you can add wire to the line before the yarn. Great vid.
