I dunno about baby ducks but I know it's not true for baby killdeer. I had to pick a baby up and move it to keep it from getting run over by the lawnmower, and the mama stuck right by it.
@seiboshen she won't reject their babies because a human touched them thats a myth, but I take it these ducks are wild so it's prob. not a good idea to mess with them.
@seiboshen: This is, by all probability, a myth. We had ducks, goats, cows, cat and their babies at home. None of those mothers ever rejected a baby, all of whom we used to touch, handle, fondle and 'torture'!
@seiboshen I'm currently in school to be an ornithologist, and I can say that no, if you touch a baby bird the parents will probably get angry, but they won't abandon the baby. Most birds don't have an amazing sense of smell like some mammals and reptiles, because they mostly depend on sight. Still, you shouldn't go around picking up baby birds. even if they are super adorable.

That's not true of any animal. The reason you shouldn't move a baby bird is b/c they fall out of nests regularly & the parents have a way of getting them back in IF they are not removed. My cat cought a baby cottontail last year, and I took it from him, the momma bunny happily moved it along w/ 3 others to a new den. Ducks DO carry salmonella <sp? which is a good reason not to let a small child touch them when not at home.
No, it's really not. I'd link here URLs in testament to my statement, but stoopid Youtube won't let me. A quick Google, as well as good ol' Snopes, will back me up though :)

the scent thing is an urban legend, but a good one. and anyway some birds will abandon their nest if they see you rustling about in it.

You're a very good parent. some folks here(California) are so bad they yell to their 1-3 year olds "SHUT UP OR I'LL SMACK THE HELL OUT OF YOU"

Anyway, it's better to tell people that they shouldn't touch bird chicks, because nothing good can come from it. Lovely family video :)

Honestly, I always thought it was true, not trying to lie to some kid on purpose. Can anyone verify this comment on the "scent" issue?

It's nice that you are at school to be an ornithologist...but you should realize that he was bluffing...of course he didn't mean it. <.<

That's because it's not true.

It's the first time I heard in connection with ducks (only heard it about songbirds, like blackbirds and the like)
I can testify, though, that it is not true for ducks - cause ducks are wonderful (okay, maybe that's not the reason, but.. ya know XD)
