@ambientrax APC 40 is my ableton mouse and screen. I don't use it to make music , I use it so I dont look at a computer screen when playing live. I actually keep my laptop lid closed... nothing else can do that for ableton.
anybody knows how to turn on and off effect just with one touch??? for example if i want to turn on beat repeat I must one click to activate and second click to deactivate... it is possible make it just with holding button? THANK YOUU
Video was sick man, but honestly, i have NO idea what you were doing and how the thing works still, thankfully i got a buddy with a pair of them I'm going to be seeing quite a bit of soon (go to school together) I can run reason fine, just give me a keyboard, some pads for drums, a few knobs and I'm set, but from what i can see, are you just working with samples or how all does this thing work? Im clearly confused as all hell when it comes to APCs and Launchpads, the maschine, monomes, etc.
picking one of these up soon and I'm just gonna bookmark this for all the midi routing advice. Such a pain, but easier to then in early 2000's. I should rock sf2's just for the hell of it. =0) spanks!
awesomee, mate your mapping seems really cool, could you tell me about the layout of ur mapping, im also curious about the FX u using and parameters, itd also be nice if you could tell me somethin about those 2 midi channels. CHeers and good job!
hey man, this questions more for ableton than the APC40, but how did you allow your left-most track to switch between scenes to a pattern without touching the clips? You have the first track going from scene 2, to scene 3, 4 and 1 in a loop, while you manipulate other tracks over it. Alternatively, I've just been copy/pasting the actual midi signals into one scene, and making the loop longer. Your method is clearly more efficient
@Musqueify Hi, look up Follow Actions in the Live manual or on youtube. Follow Actions will automatically trigger other clips in the same channel after a duration you specify (per clip).
dude, this is amazing, I am a fellow music maker and im curious what bit crusher vst's and such are you using? and what effects do you have mapped to the apc??? - thanks alot!!
on a scale from 1 to 10 how hard is ableton and the apc40 to use for a begginer who has only used traktor and a mixtrack lol djing and effects and some fl studios i guess ha
@AustinBickers Ableton's a pretty easy program to get into, and with time you can go very deep. I'd suggest downloading their fully-functional 30day demo and checking it out for yourself, following the included tutorials. There's also an Info window you can pop out in the lower left corner that displays help information about anything you hover over. Lastly, there are tons of good tutorials online. Once you wrap your head around some basics, a world of possibilities will open up!
@pakyzemun The selection buttons are mapped to MIDI clips, which in turn are routed to a VST. The MIDI clips are set to "gate" launch mode so they function momentary style. Native Live device on/off cannot be controlled this way from the APC buttons unfortunately... the APC buttons send MIDI Note messages, so they only work as toggles for turning effects on/off. As a workaround, you could use MaxMSP or another MIDI utility to turn the Note messages into CCs & play with the mapping range in Live
@svankov hey plz give mi your e-mail address so I can discuss this things with you, when you have a time...or contact me on paky_zemun@hotmail.com..I really appreciate the time you put to help us noobs out
@svankov I would like to have your contact so we can discus about this stuff...my mail, msn, skype is paky_zemun@hotmail.com...I'll be happy to talk to you...THANK YOU VERY MUCH, THIS IS RLY USEFUL...regards from belgrade, serbia!
@svankov But.....i must know more details. Are they routed to 3rd party VST effects? or Ableton effects?. How do you route the Midi to the effect? Its a super cool way of using the effects live. any more info would be much appreciated
@svankov I noticed you can toggle the master channel to the effects unit as well by just hitting the master channel selection button... is this done in the same way?
@button1Pusher Yes, the APC can be used with other software as well, provided you spend some time mapping it out to your software functions. Unlike other midi controllers though, the APC doesn't have a software midi editor unfortunately, so you're kind of stuck with whatever default MIDI information is sent from the hardware.

Awesome video! I just bought an APC40 and I was wondering if you could make a video explaining how you set up your effects for your beat repeat and erosion and stuff. I love that thing you do at about 12 seconds in
Hey I have a question. Firstly great work. Are you using the APC40 version of live or do you use the full version of Live 8?? What third part VST's are you using?
really awesome vid! i was wondering how you get the clips to trigger instantly, rather than wait for the next bar? also, seems like you assigned beat repeat effects to the track selection buttons, how do you get these to trigger instantly? any advice greatly appreciated!
i get how to produce, assign effects, and perform with this and what not, but my question is the creative process, how do you decide to go about creating a mix, how many loops you use, which loops you use, what effects, do you have a standard for every mix? do you preplan or do you just go and flow?

really nice song, listen to it since weeks and never get borred of it! so hope you will add some stuff soon... maybe with a download of a highquality mp3 ;-)
@theirishfront12 Thank you. I've mapped the knobs to effects in Live (filters, erosion, etc), as well as third-party VSTs for the rhythmic time manipulations. I used to DJ with vinyl but I prefer controller setups with Ableton Live - it's much more customizable and flexible so you can tailor it to fit your desired performance style. It's all a matter of personal preference though, I've seen guys do incredible sets with just a pair of decks as well.
i'm interested in getting one of these to dj for some extra cash, can you just hook it up to a computer and play regular songs on it? also how much do these cost?
@drummerdusty96 Yes, the controller connects to a pc/mac and you can trigger a variety of audio content, such as full tracks, loops, one-shots. Check google product search for pricing.
@MyUnknown1234 This is a mashup of a couple of different tracks - Noisia remix of Freestyler's "Painkiller", Dillinja's "Twist Em Out" and the Busta Rhymes "Woohaa" acapella - combined with original and library drum/synth loops.
@MinimalZOMBEE If you've remapped APC controls inside Ableton Live, just delete those mappings from your session. That will set them back to their default control state.
First of all, BRAVO. This is great. So, I agree with the previous comment: if you could make a video showing us how you arranged your session and mapped the APC, it would be absolutely fantastic. Quick q: I see you use the master pad with knob 4 on the device control to make that glitchy effect and it also mutes all the other channels. Could you explain how you set that up? Thanks!
@lifeinneverland Thank you, I hope to put up a more detailed video and other tutorials soon. The Master channel selector button is mapped to a timestretch "freeze" effect in Reaktor, which gives that nice grinding halt sound. Knob 4 is mapped to a filter in Live, it doesn't affect muting of the other channels. When used in conjunction with the timestretch effect, the filter provides a way to quickly shape the spectrum of the time-freeze.
Dude, ur a GOD!!! i am looking for a controller to be able to do live production performances with. and this is EXACTLY around the route im looking to go. Any advice, i have never used ableton??
can you show or maybe explain a little bit of what you do in hardmapping everything on the apc yourself? I'm trying to work on performing with mine, but the stock apc template is a little stiff and I'm trying to personalize how I use mine a bit.
May i ask, did you make any of the sounds with virtual instruments? or is this all samples and stuff from songs to make a remix? and what effects do you use to make all those glitchy sounds?
at 2:35 when you hit the upfader is that mapped to Lucifer VST as well or is that an Ableton effect? I remember watching this video over a year ago and I'm still impressed with the mapping. I'm a traditional DJ who uses Serato now but made the jump to Ableton and the apc40 along with the Bridge and still figuring out how I still want to incorporate the apc into my set.....
@CowboysDJGabe Yes, one of the vertical faders on the right kicks in the Lucifer "beat-grid" effect that allows me to reshuffle the rhythm in real-time. The fader next to it controls the Hyper parameter in Lucifer, which gives that nice roll-type effect.
@fillzyvoltron The Ableton manual and example sessions are a good place to start learning about the various capabilities of the software. YouTube is an amazing resource for more in-depth specific tutorials. Most of all, it really boils down to spending time playing with different mappings and experimenting with third-party plug-ins to extend the capabilities of Live. Unlike traditional instruments, using Live for performance is like designing and building your own instrument.
@The7thINFANTRY I have the Launchpad and I didn't really like the feel of the buttons... a little bit on the stiff side. I am now using the APC20, since it gives me clip launch matrix and faders (which the Launchpad doesn't have), and I use a BCR2000 for all my rotaries.
Awesome video!!! I'm was just wondering on DJ equipment because I'm trying to be a DJ and Producer, but here the bad thing about it... I'm 14 going on 15 and I wanna start early and be ready... Any advice you wanna give on this
@BoodaAKA Thank you. If you're looking to get started with Ableton Live, you don't need much in terms of equipment. A simple MIDI keyboard or pad controller with a few knobs/faders can get you started playing around and experimenting with different control mappings. Also, many of Live's features can be triggered from your computer keyboard, so that's something to keep in mind too. I do recommend having a basic working understanding of Live before making any major investments in gear.
@svankov Thank you for the advice!!!! I really need that :D... I'm already working on a song in the process and I hope I get good feedback on it because it like 12 minutes long!!! But keep on doing your thing and good luck in the future!!!!
@reanime13 Sometimes I use a FireWire audio interface (Presonus FireBox, or an Maudio 410). I've found that running USB audio devices can sometimes interfere with the USB bus when running multiple MIDI controllers, resulting in cracks and pops in the audio. Most often, I actually run straight out of the headphone jack on my MacBook - Mac CoreAudio is very stable and can be pushed hard with low-latency. If you're on PC, however, I definitely recommend having an external audio interface.
it this crazy.......i dont know if its something ud like to show...but it would be fucking awesome if there was video showing how u have everything arranged.... i recently got ableton but have zero clue as to how to use it...
dude, that's some seriously impressive shit you're rocking there. just about to buy one of these and looking at all the vids on youtube but keep coming back to yours when i show others what it's capable of :)
can't wait to get it and start mashing it up. nice one!
@TokyoKnights3 It really depends on your workflow but I've found it great at both. Being able to trigger loops and control levels, effects, etc, is best done with a hands-on hardware controller like the APC, but you can also use it to sequence material in a production environment. Regarding DJing, keep in mind that you cannot "scratch" content in Ableton Live, unless you also have a Serato digital vinyl setup and use The Bridge to connect it to Ableton Live.
Hey I was watching this video and I think I caught onto what you were doing for the most part and how you routed your APC to ableton, but what does the set of pads above all the faders do?
I figured the main pads triggered your loops, the faders were volume, and the knobs were effects. Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm just trying to understand how people work an APC with Ableton before I buy one)
@Lokigdren You're pretty much spot-on. The pads above the faders are by default used as TRACK SELECT buttons, which essentially shift focus over to the corresponding channel (this allows the DEVICE CONTROL knobs on the lower right to take control of devices sitting on that channel). In my case, since I hardmap all my device / fx controls and have no use for the TRACK SELECTs, I've remapped these buttons to different stutter subdivisions (1/8th, 1/16th, etc) in Lucifer VST.
still a hunk of shit... and will always be a hunk of shit... call a spade a spade... ACAI with a c so fuck off aCai and your shit components.

@MyUnknown1234 This is a mashup of a couple of different tracks - Noisia remix of Freestyler's "Painkiller", Dillinja's "Twist Em Out" and the Busta Rhymes "Woohaa" acapella - combined with original and library drum/synth loops.

QUESTION TO THE COMMUNITY :
i did a bad mistake , ive changed the standart midi mappings of my apc and now i want them back ( using ableton 8.1)
whats to do?? please help me
MinimalZOMBEE 9 months ago
@MinimalZOMBEE If you've remapped APC controls inside Ableton Live, just delete those mappings from your session. That will set them back to their default control state.
svankov 9 months ago
First of all, BRAVO. This is great. So, I agree with the previous comment: if you could make a video showing us how you arranged your session and mapped the APC, it would be absolutely fantastic. Quick q: I see you use the master pad with knob 4 on the device control to make that glitchy effect and it also mutes all the other channels. Could you explain how you set that up? Thanks!
lifeinneverland 9 months ago
@lifeinneverland Thank you, I hope to put up a more detailed video and other tutorials soon. The Master channel selector button is mapped to a timestretch "freeze" effect in Reaktor, which gives that nice grinding halt sound. Knob 4 is mapped to a filter in Live, it doesn't affect muting of the other channels. When used in conjunction with the timestretch effect, the filter provides a way to quickly shape the spectrum of the time-freeze.

can you show or maybe explain a little bit of what you do in hardmapping everything on the apc yourself? I'm trying to work on performing with mine, but the stock apc template is a little stiff and I'm trying to personalize how I use mine a bit.
GravyRobbersz 10 months ago
May i ask, did you make any of the sounds with virtual instruments? or is this all samples and stuff from songs to make a remix? and what effects do you use to make all those glitchy sounds?
samboguitarist 10 months ago
at 2:35 when you hit the upfader is that mapped to Lucifer VST as well or is that an Ableton effect? I remember watching this video over a year ago and I'm still impressed with the mapping. I'm a traditional DJ who uses Serato now but made the jump to Ableton and the apc40 along with the Bridge and still figuring out how I still want to incorporate the apc into my set.....
CowboysDJGabe 10 months ago
@CowboysDJGabe Yes, one of the vertical faders on the right kicks in the Lucifer "beat-grid" effect that allows me to reshuffle the rhythm in real-time. The fader next to it controls the Hyper parameter in Lucifer, which gives that nice roll-type effect.
svankov 9 months ago
Any chance you could send me a link where you got some of your effects? The set is BOMB
pitchcomic 10 months ago
@pitchcomic The effects used in this are Lucifer and the Reaktor Beatlookup ensemble, as well as a few native Ableton Live effects.

amazing! I thinking about buying apc and start learning ableton. Man how did you learn such skills? any advice for beginner?
fillzyvoltron 11 months ago
@fillzyvoltron The Ableton manual and example sessions are a good place to start learning about the various capabilities of the software. YouTube is an amazing resource for more in-depth specific tutorials. Most of all, it really boils down to spending time playing with different mappings and experimenting with third-party plug-ins to extend the capabilities of Live. Unlike traditional instruments, using Live for performance is like designing and building your own instrument.

This or Novation Launchpad?
The7thINFANTRY 11 months ago
@The7thINFANTRY I have the Launchpad and I didn't really like the feel of the buttons... a little bit on the stiff side. I am now using the APC20, since it gives me clip launch matrix and faders (which the Launchpad doesn't have), and I use a BCR2000 for all my rotaries.

BoodaAKA 1 year ago
@BoodaAKA Part of dj'ing is experimenting. You're young, so get your hands on everything and try to feel out whats right for you :)
smashcorefilms 11 months ago
@BoodaAKA Thank you. If you're looking to get started with Ableton Live, you don't need much in terms of equipment. A simple MIDI keyboard or pad controller with a few knobs/faders can get you started playing around and experimenting with different control mappings. Also, many of Live's features can be triggered from your computer keyboard, so that's something to keep in mind too. I do recommend having a basic working understanding of Live before making any major investments in gear.
svankov 9 months ago
@svankov Thank you for the advice!!!! I really need that :D... I'm already working on a song in the process and I hope I get good feedback on it because it like 12 minutes long!!! But keep on doing your thing and good luck in the future!!!!

mad skills, man! if it ain't a secret - what sound card/interface are you using for gigs?
reanime13 1 year ago
@reanime13 Sometimes I use a FireWire audio interface (Presonus FireBox, or an Maudio 410). I've found that running USB audio devices can sometimes interfere with the USB bus when running multiple MIDI controllers, resulting in cracks and pops in the audio. Most often, I actually run straight out of the headphone jack on my MacBook - Mac CoreAudio is very stable and can be pushed hard with low-latency. If you're on PC, however, I definitely recommend having an external audio interface.

Would this be more useful for DJing or production?
TokyoKnights3 1 year ago
@TokyoKnights3 It really depends on your workflow but I've found it great at both. Being able to trigger loops and control levels, effects, etc, is best done with a hands-on hardware controller like the APC, but you can also use it to sequence material in a production environment. Regarding DJing, keep in mind that you cannot "scratch" content in Ableton Live, unless you also have a Serato digital vinyl setup and use The Bridge to connect it to Ableton Live.

listensilenthaastile 1 year ago
Hey I was watching this video and I think I caught onto what you were doing for the most part and how you routed your APC to ableton, but what does the set of pads above all the faders do?
I figured the main pads triggered your loops, the faders were volume, and the knobs were effects. Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm just trying to understand how people work an APC with Ableton before I buy one)
Lokigdren 1 year ago
@Lokigdren You're pretty much spot-on. The pads above the faders are by default used as TRACK SELECT buttons, which essentially shift focus over to the corresponding channel (this allows the DEVICE CONTROL knobs on the lower right to take control of devices sitting on that channel). In my case, since I hardmap all my device / fx controls and have no use for the TRACK SELECTs, I've remapped these buttons to different stutter subdivisions (1/8th, 1/16th, etc) in Lucifer VST.
