Cameron is trying to score political points. There was a lot of cars thefts in the early 1990's where I live, and also young gangs causing mayhem and trouble on the streets in the mid 1990's. Who were in power then? The Conservatives. One day Cameron says "Hug an hoodie" and the next he is proposing to be tough on crime. Same as what Blair said in 1993, Tough on Crime, tough on the causes of crime. I thought Straw was arrogant and out of touch though with what he said.

Its important to recognise young people often hate crime and are the victims of crime too. Im 23 and gangs make me sick. So do yobs. Our criminal justice system remains extremely pro-criminal. I am not in the flogging-hanging brigade and I hate mob justice, what we need in Britain is real justice. Mr Cameron has done the right thing taking time to listen to someone like Helen Newlove rather than yet another bleeding heart group like Asbo Concern, hellbent on helping criminals avoid punishment.

The evil scumbags who viciously killed Mr Newlove should die in prison. But as whole life tariffs are barely used, they probably won't. There is far too much time given to bleeding heart pro- criminal pressure groups like The Howard League for Penal Reform and Asbo Concern and not enough given to groups like the Victims of Crime Trust. I am also sick of excuses being made for young offenders and the notion that young people can't also be enraged by yobs. The issue is not poverty. Its attitude.

There is very clearly a sickness in Britain. True, other nations have crime as well- some with much higher levels but we have a deep problem. Root causes must allways be looked at, but as a society we must not tolerate those who terrorize us. When such appalling crimes get equally appalling outcomes (ie 4 years for an unprovoked brutal murder) it is obvious that the legal system is on the side of the criminals and not the victims. This isn't tabloid sensationalism- its whats actually happening.

Mrs Newlove said it herself in this video, 'we need action, words are very very cheap'. However, the opposition, like the government, are great at talking about the problem but are guilty of having no realistic strategy or new ideas to deal with serious violent crime.

My simpathy goes out to the Newloves. This happening once is bad enough but it's all too frequent. All the points posted are valid. What need is a solution (stating the obvious I know). Some favour the death penalty which does stop these individuals reoffending, either that or life imprisonment. Personally I believe that those who commit this kind of crime don't value their own lives or any real values so they are not going to change. Being soft has got us nowhere, tougher must be better?

I have deep sympathy for this Lady and her family but I find it despicable to use her hurt as a political tool. I also find it appalling that so many politicians go to schools and publish videos and news reports exposing the children to the media. We are told that parents can't video their own children, but politicians expose dozens, quite disgusting. American Politics at it's worst.

It's disgusting the yob culture, a grown man and father murdered by 3 teenages. The government do nothing about youth crime just softly softly approaches, asbos, cautions & fines in some cases small sentences or community service. In 2005 2 of my friends got badly attacked by 3 youths ages 13/15/17 and they only got 2 weeks comms service.
