Emma was the book that I least liked by Austen but Romola's Emma was absolutely great and I loved it.

I enjoyed her performane in Emma so much. She was able to show the character from early age (14) till her marriage conviincingly. Haven't seen her in anything else but will rent "Atonement" next., but since she doesn't play the main character in that, I'm afraid she will not be on screen enough... still going to watch it though.

Well, to hu444, Briony, as you may recall in the novel, matures greatly and eventually realizes that Paul Marshall is actually the rapist.

And to jimbob6986, I agree with you. The fabricated ending of Part 3 created by Briony ensures a final act of kindness. Including this ending is the only way she could rightfully achieve atonement with herself and bring the two lovers, destroyed by her, to a happy ending in the romantic fantasized ending. Out of her self-pity, this is the least she could do.

It is not as straightforward as a lie. It is Briony's innocence and vivid imagination that prompts her to reveal what she thinks- she partly believs that robbie is a sexual predator...

I think that is one of the major dilemmas of the Book/Film. When does someone gain control and thereby responsibility for their actions. Her imagination may have warped her perceptions but she still lies about what happened and what she saw. In a sense she was ensuring the plot she had created was fulfilled.

Whoever who did the make-up should win the Oscar. They made all three actresses who played Briony (Saoirse, Romola, and Vanessa Regrave), who didn't look like each other, connect as the same character. In fact, I thought the 18-year old Briony was played by the same girl as the earlier Briony! Kudos to the director for being consistent.

not that i didn't find Ronan impressive, but i feel that it's Romola's performance which was the most closely portrayal of Briony character as written on the novel,not to mention her scene with the French Soldier emotionally gripped me and also the most heartbreaking part of the movie as i also feel the same scene was also the most powerful scene on the novel.
