The mustangs are not starving..unless their water and food is blocked off by ranchers...on public lands. Cows and profit are the problem.. not the horses! Wolfswren,,,every assumption that you post is inaccurate. do you prefer to be known as a horse hater, rather than a what did you call us blind animal rights people. We are against cruelty.. 40,000+ mustangs in holding pens have no chance of being adopted. The American citizen is paying millions to feed them in their pens each year.
The us already has an overpopulation in domestic horses, why send these to slaughter? The wild mustangs shouldn't be gathered up at such numbers. It makes me feel disgusted at what people just do for their stupid selfish reasons such as cattle grazing. They, the mustangs, need to have a voice so that once and for all, they can roam freely and safely.
@Wolfswren If you could read correctly you would see that I said hundreds / thousands not hundreds of thousands lol and nope I am not on their payroll and I don't wish to be on the payroll because then I would have to deal with all the blind one sided animal rights people everyday who seem to think starving to death and roaming wild is a much better life then being rounded up and adopted out where they can live fat and happy. so I would suggest you take your own advice and open YOUR mind.

Right now the BLM with the help of Catoor Livestock via helicopters is chasing herds with week old babies over treacherous ground at breakneck speed for the Tuscarora round up. So far 12 horses have died..... you've have bought into the BLM lies & cover up. These horses belong to the American people and I'm sick of my tax $ paying the salaries of these evil liars. If it's so good why won't they allow public observation.... Horses are dying while the BLM is lying.
What a bunch of crap. Ken Salazar of the DOI who oversees the BLM is a wealthly cattleman & oilman. They now have 32,000+wild mustangs & burros in holding pens & during 2010 plan to remove an additional 12,000+ WM&B & place them in holding pens too. All of this is at the expense of the taxpayer! These WM&B belong to American taxpayers as do the lands that were set aside for the protection of the icons of the west. Salazar & the BLM refer to our horses as VERMIN. They want the land for cattle!
@horse12301 It's called 'extinction'. Sect'y Ken Salazar of the DOI who happens to be a wealthy cattleman and oilman oversees the BLM. Salazar and his horse killers within the BLM refer to our iconic American wild mustangs and burros as VERMIN! During 2010 the BLM plans to round up and remove 12,000+ mustangs & burros [at taxpayer's expense] & send them to holding pens 'somewhere'. They already have over 32,000 mustangs & burros in holding pens NOW. They're waiting for slaughterhouses to reopen
BLM actually does care about them. my uncle has actually purchased some blm horses and they do come and check up on them to make sure you are not treating them poorly. people are so close minded these days, they listen to animal rights goups and dont see the truth. If we left every horse out on the land, they would indeed starve to death from over grazing, so we must take some away to save hundreds more. But people tend to see the few taken away and not the hundreds/thousands saved.
BLM does not care about these horses or what is best for them or the public. They care about what is best for cattle ranchers who want to use our public lands to graze their cattle and line their own pockets.
If by doing the best they can, they mean shooting them or in most cases selling them for out of country slaughter? Yes. There are other ways to cut down the population, BLM is very convincing and has told people that they are doing everything they can. They aren't evil, they just don't care about the horses, and as a result =, they are very inhumane.
Interesting background information: last year, BLM authorized a 300% increase in cattle grazing for the area, and the building of a fence that BLM itself admitted might cut wild horses from their winter range and cause them to die. Wild horses would also be locked out of the best pasture with the most abundant water during the driest time of the year. At the time, BLM justified its decision by arguing that wild horse populations in the area were minimal.
A couple of months later, it came out with its puzzling claim of population explosion, setting the stage for this massive round-up. Clearly, something here is amiss. Where did these 3,000 horses come from?
Wild horses comprise a minute fraction of grazing animals on public lands, where they are outnumbered by cattle at least 200 to 1. The 1971 Act states that, in a given area, a certain amount of vegetation may be eaten as forage. Only when that amount is exceeded are there too many animals. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has overwhelmingly favored cattle in setting appropriate wild horse population levels, resulting in indiscriminate removal of horses and burros from public lands.
Wild horses are not suffering from drought and starvation. Mismanagement is at the root of most of these problems. Despite federal protection, wild horses have been relegated to the most inhospitable areas of the range. Still, they have adapted and survived; most horses rounded up by the BLM are well-fed and healthy. However, public land fencing often prevents horses from accessing scarce natural water sources and disrupts their widespread grazing patterns.
The main cause of degradation of public lands is livestock use, not wild horses. Cows graze within a mile of water, while wild horses are highly mobile, grazing from five to ten miles from water, at higher elevations, on steeper slopes, and in more rugged terrain. A congressionally-mandated study by the National Academy of Sciences found that, in one year, livestock consumed 70% of grazing resources on public lands, while wild horses and burros consumed less than 5%
In its 1982 study, the National Academy of Sciences found annual rates of increase of 10% or less in wild horse populations, a far cry from the 20% increase relied upon by the BLM to justify its removal program. Wild horses do have predators, in the form of mountain lions and bears. In 2004 for instance, only 1 out of 28 foals survived in Montanas Pryor Mountain area. Such low survival rate was mostly due to mountain lion predation.
this insane cruelty has to be banned permanently, the US government/Cloud Foundation,Raoul,Sheryl,Howard,Ginger/Viggo,and every citizen from each state has to pitch in to ban this useless slaughter from happening
honestly the government hollars" their starving etc" but have you ever seen a mustang in the wild thats thin, sick etc? its simply excuses to get mor ehorses off pubic land for development -_-.
Actually, yes, I have. Have YOU? Have you ever been out to the wild to see any of them up close? I have. They're starving. The breed and create more of them. If the BLM stopped they'd overpopulate even more than they already are and eventually go extinct.
YEA I have, an you knwo what the only palces i have ever seen a Mustang look starved or half dead was eithe rin aholding facility OR in places where the BLM cut the animals off from ANY Water supplies such as Pilot Mountains HMA , and Ravenwood where animals were fodn within FEET of fenced off water supplies.
Only the ones that have exhausted their food supply. They're meant to be rounded up, otherwise they'll eat all the food, and since they no naural predators, they'll die a much sadder way than even if they ever went to slaughter. Dying of starvation is much worse then being slaughtered or hunted.
i can agree with that however how many of those stravation situations have we as humans caused by fencing off th lands that they roam? Keeping them from areas that they have had acess to for how many hundreds of years untill we come long an string up fences an block them off from food an water?its one thing for it to be privaely owned land thats blocked, but anouther for it to be public lands in which these animals roam. Simply annoys me.
Well, if we didn't fence off the lands the different Herd Management Areas (HMA) would all start roaming together and then there would be LESS food. And these horses haven't been here all that long. Only since the start of the U.S. And they have plenty of watering holes in the wild. I've been to many of the HMAs and seen this. The water isn't an issue, the food is. They live in deserts where there are no natural foods to begin with.
you need to go do alilsresearch rescently scientists found some bones that date back to before explorers came to the us that are suposedly anscetors of teh ancient horse that roamed the americas. the BLM is not doing anything wrong. If they did not give the horses to loving homes then they would starve to death. Its sad that they cant be wild but the way I see it I would rather them have a good home they die because they dont have enough food.
yep here lately its relay showed how well the blam has done in adopting out mass quantiies f mustangs at once, hmm they keep such agood eye on adopters to - gee remind me how many just got abandoned in fl?
They do. :) When people adopt them they are wild. And if those people choose to keep them wild they're able too. Not only that, but mustangs are protected, so there'll always be wild one out there. :)
i adopted a blm mustang. shes a year old bay roan filly. and shes doing great. she already follows me. i wish everyone would just quit complaining, i dont see any of them going out there and helping the mustangs. the blm is doing the mustangs a great thing, b/c then they get great homes where they never have to look for food again. the only thing i think is that the blm should find a better way to round them up instead of chasing them over rough terrain for 30 miles with a helicopter.
Awe, thats great. :) How long ago did you get her?
Yeah, I wish they would too, these poor horses overpopulate out there and starve. The BLM aren't the bad guys.
Thanks so much for posting this comment. I saw this in my inbox and thought 'oh no, another one. Why can't they just realize that these horses ARE in danger out there?', but I was so happy when I saw this. It means a lot to me.
I understand that the horses were staving because there is no food for them to eat but you did not say anything about the 8 million cattle and sheep on the land with them they are the ones eating all the food.
No, thats because the ranchers have the right to be there and are protected just like the mustangs are. Those sheep and cattle are what feed our nation. And the ranchers rotate. They DO take their cattle off when the food risks running low.
Did you know, in an effort to save the mustangs from GOVERNMENT slaughter, PRO TRAINERS are buying them, training them, and selling them for $1?! if it keeps them from slaughter, fine by me, but they shouldn't be slaughtered in the first place!
No. Thats not true. Slaughter is outlawed in the U.S. Its illegal. Not only that, but when someone adopts a mustang the government owns it for the first year in effort to keep the horse from being underfed, or abused. This means that the horse wouldn't legally be the trainers to sell. If they were to get rid of it it would be a $25 transfer fee, and the BLM would still own the mustang.
in 2004, the 1971 Act was surreptitiously amended, without so much as a hearing or opportunity for public review, opening the door to the sale of thousands of wild horses to slaughter for human consumption abroad. Today, I haven't heard anything about wild mustangs no longer being slaughtered for foriegn consumptions.
Did you know that under U.S. law the American Mustangs are protected? This means that its illegal to take more than a certain amount off the land and there will always be mustangs in america. Even if the BLM does hate america as you seem to think, there will always be mustang out there.
Did you know that the BLM is losing money while doing this? They can' lie about the law. Its IN the law that the mustangs are protected, hun. You don't have to believe me, but don't pick a fight with me.
No, thats fine, I completely understand you're reasoning, but I've been volunteering and doing a lot of hands on work for the BLM and mustangs for years now. It just really annoys me that people are arguing about this stuff when a lot of them just assume and don't do any research.
Also, I really appreciate the apology. People like you are why I try not to get in fights. Not everyone deserves it.
Good question! I have presented her with many issues that will have to be addressed well before she even drops the first tailgate. The boundary fence will have to be wired with low voltage to keep them from wandering back onto public lands. Secondly, the 30,000 plus horses will all have to be cleared by a team veterinarians to assure they are not spreading any transmittable diseases to the proposed ecosystem.
I have comprised a list of 50 issues that will have to be addressed before this unprecedented rescue is even attempted. I am not opposed to it at all,but Madeleine better have all horses in a row so to speak before she even attempts this.
Are you all familiar with Madeleine Pikens proposed adoption of 33,500 horses from the BLM?She will be releasing them onto a million plus acre parcel of land. There is no set date or time. However there are several ramifications that will be attached to her fantastic feat of heroism. If you want to know more, contact me. I will convey all of the pit falls of this unprecedented animal rescue.
Yes, I am familiar, but honestly don't see how this will work when she's buying property that borders public land and letting them rome free. How does you prupose she keeps them on her property?
Last but not least.A team of qualified property managment personele will have to consistently monitor the entire herd and property for compromised boundaries.
@sheepgirl66 She doesn't have to keep them on her own property. There are free-roaming laws in place that allow owned livestock (like horses, cows & bison) to roam free in certain areas.
Gorgeous work. This world needs more folks like you. I happen to know that you do not only do creative piece like this, but I have heard tell that you train and help place multiple mustangs. The American mustang is who we as a people "rode in on" There ancestors were here before mine. They deserve the respect you are giving them everyday. Thanks....
great video. i know all about the BLM. i actully own a mustang. trained him from the time he was 2. hes 5 now. and my barn owns a second mustang. both were captured in Nevada where there was nothing for them to eat. *if you want to see him tell me. i put up a pick. theres no pics/videos of him on my channel.*
If the BLM has to do the roundups I want them to be "humane" by the dictionary definition. Check out my video and petition if you too would like to see the BLM be humane in roundups. If the BLM is doing such a great job then why don't they let the public observe the roundups?

This means that the horse wouldn't legally be the trainers to sell. If they were to get rid of it it would be a $25 transfer fee, and the BLM would still own the mustang.

When was slaughtered outlawed? It must have been quite recent because as early as 2008 mustangs were still being sent to slaughter.

in 2004, the 1971 Act was surreptitiously amended, without so much as a hearing or opportunity for public review, opening the door to the sale of thousands of wild horses to slaughter for human consumption abroad. Today, I haven't heard anything about wild mustangs no longer being slaughtered for foriegn consumptions.

What is the BLMs problem can't they just leave them be, they must hate america beacause these horses are symbol of america!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BeachMist13 3 years ago
Did you know that under U.S. law the American Mustangs are protected? This means that its illegal to take more than a certain amount off the land and there will always be mustangs in america. Even if the BLM does hate america as you seem to think, there will always be mustang out there.

Did you know that the BLM is losing money while doing this? They can' lie about the law. Its IN the law that the mustangs are protected, hun. You don't have to believe me, but don't pick a fight with me.

im sorry if u think im trying to pick a fight wit u. But im not i was just saying the way i see it.

The BLM isn't losing money - us tax payers are the ones losing the money for these totally unnecessary and brutal roundups.

How does you prupose she keeps them on her property?
sheepgirl66 3 years ago
Last but not least.A team of qualified property managment personele will have to consistently monitor the entire herd and property for compromised boundaries.
JerseyRenegade 3 years ago
@sheepgirl66 She doesn't have to keep them on her own property. There are free-roaming laws in place that allow owned livestock (like horses, cows & bison) to roam free in certain areas.

Gorgeous work. This world needs more folks like you. I happen to know that you do not only do creative piece like this, but I have heard tell that you train and help place multiple mustangs. The American mustang is who we as a people "rode in on" There ancestors were here before mine. They deserve the respect you are giving them everyday. Thanks....
