I have a tip for myself: don't listen to videos of guys who have unimpressive physiques. And with that advice I won't be watching any more of your videos.
a man on the training studio always ask me to let him be my personal trainer, but i'm not sure if i want to because he is quite big and only been a pt for 1 year and i'm afraid i won't loose so much weight as i wish to....
25 year old can know a lot more than 50 year old, if the 25 year old has actually studied the matter, and the 50 year old is doing training more like as a side job.
most gyms are asking for a 4 year degree in kinesiology or anatomy if not a certification from a recognized association as such as NSCA, ACSM, ISSA. The couse of study is not easy. if a person understands human biology, anatomy, physiology at the college level it will help. I get your point, but everyone deserves a chance. If a pt with less experience than you asks you for help would you help them? We need both experience and little experience even MD's need training. pt's do too. it balances
It's obvious America has very low standards for education. In Australia you MUST complete a certificate III in fitness to be an employee in the industry, further more you MUST complete an additional certificate IV to become a personal trainer. Both certificates are 16-32 weeks full-time in a college or training institute, if you fail the exams you DON'T get certified.
Let's say a trainer with a four year degree has type I diabetes. Because he or she cannot efficiently utilize carbohydrates as energy, the body converts the spare carbohydrates into fat and as a result, a higher body fat composition is almost entirely unavoidable. Does that mean everyone should avoid that trainer? No! Also, gyms hire trainers without a degree to save money. This is a big reason why people die at the hands of uneducated trainers.
First of all i agree with the fact that most personal trainers only have a certification (and some of those certs are better than others) but there are some who actually have a B.S. Degree in Exercise Science... But as for if your trainer doesnt look the part, that really doesnt really matter. I wouldnt necessarily hire a morbidly obese trainer but just because they are not body builders doesnt mean they are not knowledgeable in personal training. P.S. Genetics plays its role too.
Dont agree with this video. Not sure why your using a driving license as an example. I work in the industry and i've seen trainers who look great but show bad practice and i've seen guys not in such great shape but show first class practice!
Just saw this video and it sounds like a load of BS. I have been a trainer for 11yrs now and also a college basketball coach and college strength and conditioning coach. Picking your trainer by the way he looks is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Im 6'5' 220 at about 9% body fat. I played D1 college football and basketball. Both of my personal trainers that I hire out to coach me for kickboxing and strength training are both fat and out of shape not to mention uneducated and uncertified.
@charlrogers1990 I just like physical fitness. I know alot about it from my own experience ever since a teenager. Passion is better than lining up all your certifications on a page.
A few of the training certifications are actually pretty legitimate - NSCA, NASM, NSCF and ACSM. It takes between 3-6 months to study for the certification exam..for the NSCA one in particular, only about half of those examined pass. I know it can be easy to become a trainer but if you see a trainer with these proper certifications, you can put some trust in them. As long as they are paying attention to you, your form/performace and your goals. I wouldn't put complete faith in the weekend certs
I always wondered how personal trainers hide their erections when training a really hot chick. I talked to a couple of girls last time i was at the gym. I went to the restroom and had to beat it. I really wanna become trainer (I'm not a perv, I love health and helping people). But what do you guys wear? Jockstrap, jockeys, ?
Came across your video as I was looking up info on ISSA for a personal training certificate. I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with what you had to say, more than anything I want to be the example for my future clients. If I'm not mistaken most personal trainers still work mostly off commission, I'd say looking the part would be pretty darn important in order to attract more potential clients.
@teamfroch excepta PT makes 3 times as much as a hair dresser(if he knows what he's doing), you can't really compare the 2 in any way because of that fact alone. It may be common to 'become' a PT since it's pretty easy to get certified, but to stay in the industry for the long run and thrive instead of getting swallowed up within the first year isn't common at all. You can become a registered professional fighter by taking a medical exam but with no training you are going to get killed.
I agree with most everything you are saying. It should be up to the discretion of the trainee whether or not to use said trainer. There are many industries full of fakes, I work in the tattoo industry and know this all too well. Healthy diet and exercise is all people need. I have always found it funny that many nurses and doctors, people who we put our utmost trust in with our health are overweight and unhealthy alot of the time.
@outcastXVX It's true that many nurses and doctors are overweight and unhealthy. It's the ultimate irony. Before the laws were passed, drug companies could give doctors tickets to baseball games or special vacation deals as long as the doctors prescribe their drugs. I'm not saying that all doctors are that bad. But, seriously, some doctors are the ultimate hypocrites.
he has a very valid point...I get annoyed when I see a puny or chubby person calling himself a personal trainer. Not that you have to have a personal training work experience but atleast have the look that you have been doing this aka you are familiar and do know what you are doing and IT HAS WORKED for ou
what about a degree on exercise science that will take me about 2 years minimum. how is that diferent from those certificates that just take about 6 months.
@pvsg1990 Getting BS or higher degree in an exercise/fitness related field will provide you with the practical knowledge to pass any of these exams with flying colors. I have a BS in exercise science and I took the NSCA and really only studied for a few weeks because I already knew much of the information. You can easily study for any of these exams for a couple months and get the cert and call yourself a CPT. It's just that you will more easily be able to market yourself to the public..
@pvsg1990 and most fitness centers won't hire you without a certification anyway. What's the harm anyway besides a few hundred bucks (you're already paying thousands in school loans) for a few hours of multiple choice questions. I would definitely go for the degree + certification
@steverunsxc thanks for the reply. Yeah i found 2 private schools that offer this. One is brian college here in downtown LA in california in which offers a associates degree in exercise science and a certification which i believe is the acsm. The second is cni college in orange county which only offers the nsca. Brian college charges me 22000 and cni 14000. But i dont know if to continue in the community college where i am or go there to that private school.
@TheChainer1234 Yess unfortunately they can. But the key is experience, and you can't buy that or just learn it in a few days. Steve has a very good point there.
You're right about personal trainers not needing anything.. In fact, you don't even need a certification. I'm studying currently but i'm making my own little business for personal training, fitness has been my lifestyle for 5 years now, i'm 20 years old. I've actually been pretty successful as far as getting clients, but of course when i do get this certification once i'm finished studying it's garunteed to get more clients and hired in an actual company which is nice
I totally agree! That's why I don't have a trainer, because I look better than all of them. Sometimes, I feel like going over to person that is being trained and saying, "Hey, stop doing that sissy stuff and do this for better results,"
@BodyPerformanceTV What if I were to get the ISSA just to get my foot into the door, then further my education in health and fitness? Maybe get more certifications, or go to college? Is that better? I look the part of course and love physical fitness.
@steverunsxc Darness1234 The gay racist. If you have any doubts please take a look to put your mind at ease. You may leave your comments if you wish ?I am no one special but on wed I broke the record for rowing 1102m in 4min the fastest 50 yr old weighing 73kg.Check concept 2 rower my name is Phillip Cameron.Me and Darness had a few games on here boxing for 3 min and push ups.
This is the nature of a profession in human services. In effect you are selling yourself to the consumers. The average joe looking to improve their fitness will initially go for the trainer that has the look. If you don't look like Arnold, you will have to talk the talk and attract clients by building a reputation and spreading the word around the local area that you know your stuff and can deliver results. Clients will almost always go for what looks more aesthetically pleasing first and
Anyone can change there body. Alot of military ppl I train tell me they think because they run and over work there body its ok for them to take in simple carbs and sugars into their bodies and they'll be ok.
Perfectly said. Im a personal trainer and 19 years old and the youngest trainer in all the companies clubs and it is intimidating knowing that the older trainers are way better then me but yet I am learning so much.
This is pretty much bullshit. I know at least a dozen of my friends who are in the Marines/Army or who are just regular athletes, and they don't look in shape at all. In fact most of them have big bellies, but all of them can run 3 miles in at least 17:30. In general, they are in stellar shape. Just because people don't have the image of an athlete, doesn't make them not suitable to train others for competition/sport/beach body/general health or even combat.
Sorry to say mate you have too do a course and you have to keep so manny points every 2 years to keep your certificate .. i am a Personal Trainer i have My cert 3&4 diploma and Metabolic Precision certified LV 1,2,3.. BUT saying all that it is too easy to get the basic certification i do agree but out of a class only 1-3 actually make it ! !
And i do believe you should practice what you preach !! But there is always two sides to a stories. so don't judge people ..

Your exatlly right. It took me years of doing the wrong things and doing research to figure this stuff out. Many of the personal trainers I met over the years made me actually go backwords in my fitness goals. If I see a trainer who does not a impressive physique now, I think 2 things, not passionate about his or her work, or is almost or completely useless. Not true in all cases but in most. Why pay for someone who is not in better shape then you are.
And you say,"if the trainer doesn't look physically better", then be leery. Bill Billicek, arguably the best coach in the NFL, doesn't put the pads on with his players. You sound bitter because you posess extensive degrees in the field, and people that don't, can make money in the field. No one has done a better job at simplifying the process of fitness Steve, than you. You unfortunately took a hit though, when you make it sound as though you're the ONLY knowledgable one out there. Love yourself
You know what Steve? You had me right up until this video. What a pile of arrogant, self adulating nonsense, on your part. I'm really surprised. I admire anyone that go's through extensive schooling in whatever field. But, the reality, is that there are no parralells to be drawn between a dr. and personal trainer, the same for an attorney, to use your examples. Someone that gets certified did the extent of what was asked of them. Its not rocket science, it's personal training.
That is so true. I'm going to start a PT-course in a half year, and im working my ass off in the gym to get that representing body.. i know i wont be a pro when i get my papers that will come in years of experience. but at least i know what a real personal trainer should be!
I'm taking college classes and about to go through a NASM 8 month course to get my cert. I'm fast and skinny and can run forever. Im nowhere near your muscular disposition. But idk how much that has to do with training. But intresting thoughts. (subscribed)
Alot doctors go through degrees and that kind of thing and if you ask them about fitness and what to do i can guarentee that they wouldnt know half of what personal trainers do. You have to remember these days they cover alot more on fitness and there still is a big need for trainers. I see so many people that have been going to the gym for years and think they know what they are doing but seriously i almost cry seeing some of the stuff they do. Talk about dangerous! Jeez
I gotta agree that alot of people do like to train with trainers who look the part! I get alot of comments from my clients that they wouldn't of chose myself to train with if i didnt look like i trained. Lucky for me i love bodybuilding. And most of my clients want to lose weight and are female. But i have to say these days it depends which college you go with and to what extent they teach you on knowledge about fitness.
Body image in personal trainers is necessary in some places, is a marketing tool, I am studding to become a personal trainer in California, here is all about looks and the people you know.and how good of a talker you are. Sadly I have seen a "cut-throat" attitude amongst many personal trainers. Is sad but true.
I personally never used a personal trainer. I study and learn on my own, and I push myself hard every day in the gym, and I eat healthy. With this dedication and love for what I do, I dropped nearly 50 lbs of scale weight, about 6 inches off my waist and increased my strength and my cardio endurance. I still have another 30 lbs to go to reach my target weight of 180 lbs. I suspect by that point, I should see a well defined 6-pack. No trainer will get me up at 5am or prep my meals. Its all me
I totally agree with you, I am currently getting my master's in Exercise physiology and i'm a trainer at a local gym, and I always tell my clients the same thing about how there isn't a governing body so it takes time to find the trainer that is right for them because there is no standard of qualification. Thanks for the video

I think a good personal trainer needs severelar things: A good understanding about biochemistry (which most don't) some understanding of basic physics (how to excert more force etc) and should have taken a class in human anatomy. If he is also lean and muscular that's even better because it shows he has experience
It would be nice if there was a 4 year degree in Personal Training offered at major institutions. The degree of professionalism and expertise could rise exponentially and be more standardized. I would include courses in psychology as well a the anatomy and physiology/exercise physiology basics.
Normally, there are some PT that aren't so good looking but they just look healthy. The best trainers in the history of all sports...let's talk abut Angelo Dundee for example... being the trainer of the greatest of all times in boxing history....that's not a tiny deal... But anyways talking about more general PT, the more knowledge you have of course the more posibilities to be in shape. We're not talking about sexy posing...just "how to train". In conclusion image is important on the market.
this is bullshit i had 2 do a one year course 2 become a personal trainer not 2 mention any extra certs i want on the side and also its not about looks its all about knowledge...
@wrecklessfun It pretty much is about looks. Someone who has a credit score of 400 and has previously declared bankruptcy might know a lot about finance but would you trust them to manage and invest your money? Why should you trust advice coming from someone who cant even get themselves into shape?
@wrecklessfun i have to disagree with you on this, why would you wanna take advice from a guy who doesn't look great themselves. Would you take money advice from a guy who's broke? probably not
Scenario: you want to get muscled up. So you have the choice between man a) who has not much muscle mass like the guy in the Mr Muscle advert, but has a qualification in gym training, or man b) who has shapely muscles like Ryan Reynolds but with no qualifications. Who are you going to choose? I'd go for Ryan Reynolds...
In the UK the fitness tutors in universities and colleges tell you that you don't need to be muscular and lean to be a personal trainer. They believe you can be a personal trainer and look like Pavarotti. I was shocked when they told me that, because if I wanted advice on fitness and health I wouldn't consult Pavarotti...
@martynblackburn1977 Yea,..I see a lot of Beachbody coaches saying "You don't need to look ripped to be a Beachbody coach." If these coaches can't use these "great" Beachbody programs to get themselves as ripped as the programs claim to get you,..then how do they expect to deliver for their clients?
@martynblackburn1977 thats probably because at this rate there wont be any lean, muscular people in the UK! they're vision of healthy and lean is compleltely out of control!
Okay I am 22 and certified through ACE but I don't feel like that is enough. I don't feel that I am qualified to train people and have their health in my hands. I need help with setting up safe and efficient workout plans.. I'm not really comfortable in that area. I don't know if I have all the knowledge needed to get people the results they deserve. How should I go about doing this? Do gyms have classes for personal trainers that I could take? Should I take some classes at a Junior College?
@brockschoenbeck Read Smart Exercise by Covert Bailey. It will not realy help with training people BUT it will help immensely with the real science of weight loss and muscle building!
Responding to IggyPiggy23's comment by making a bizarre statement. Does this mean that a welder with better teeth has more right to perform dentistry than a dentist with poor teeth but a proven track record of brilliant results? As a PT Im offended by your remarks. A PT may have different goals to the client i.e bodybuilding rather than endurance training, it doesnt mean the PT hasnt studied, practised and researched that area enough to excel in it. Think things through before posting nonsense.
@jhpersonaltraining what bizarre comment did i make? if anything it looks like you're agreeing with me because that's pretty much what I've been saying. That's why I said I felt bad for PT's who saw this vid
@IggyPiggy23 Sorry, badly worded by me I guess. I was agreeing with what you said. I was saying that bodyperformanceTV were the ones making the bizarre comment, not you. Apologies.
isn't that an unfair judgment on trainers who don't look the way you wanna look? they could know everything and still be fat, or your lady trainer could have just had a baby, you don't know... I mean Arnold schwarzenegger is one fat flabby man now...........................
@BodyPerformanceTV there is a correlation between out of shape guys and the amount of knowledge they have? Arnold is all chubby out of shape but he probably still knows a bunch of stuff. Sorry I'm not trying to be rude, just I felt a bit bad for those people out there who might be in a stage of their life where they aren't so lean and muscular but still know a lot about training techniques, now they might get less clients who knows. That's all.
@BodyPerformanceTV I may or I may not but although it "may be perceived" that way it doesn't mean he is less qualified because he has bad teeth. I hope you don't also think Obama knows nothing because he is a young black man, because that would be discrimination/profiling right? I hope you get what I'm saying, if not forget it...
@BodyPerformanceTV I have a degree in Biology with classes in exercise physiology. There is a certification that you can get only after you get your bachelors in exercise science or a related field (Biology). I can't remember what that is. I am looking into being a personal trainer because health and fitness has always been a big part of my life and I train people for free right now.

This video clip should be played in all gyms around the world. It is so true. I loved the drivers licence comparison. I am a personal trainer but have a bachelors in Exercise science with a minor in sports medicine. I am certified through the American Collge of Sports medicine to personal train. I am obtaining my mastors in strength and conditioning and currently compete as a middle weight natural bodybuilder. I feel the same way about people who personal train know nothing.

i plan on becoming a personal trainer when i get older, but rite now im only 16. so i was wondering where's the best place to get an education, and what can i do now to prepare myself for the future. thanks

i agree, well sort of. if your an ectomorph that wants to gain muscle. then you should hire an ectomorph that has a lot of muscle..and so on for the rest of the body types.
Man couldnt agree with you more. I see so many of them that should never be training anyone, let alone become a trainer. Practise what you preech i say.
I agree with 95% of what you said but I have to say that the N.S.C.A-C.P.T and C.S.C.S are great certifications and are 1 ( of only 2 I believe) that are nationally accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, and are very in depth and great courses. But I totally agree that most trainers just do it cause it's easy and little of them actually help people! Keep up the good advice! P.S Can I ask where you were certified and what is your background??
@zaytony Im an AFPA CPT w/25 yrs of experience w/strength & weight training at elite levels. Also have a background in biology & chemistry. Over the years Ive gain knowledge through studies of experts in the field of weight loss & fitness like Covert Bailey (degrees Harvard & MIT) & James Levine M.D., doctor & weight loss scientist at Mayo Clinic. This knowledge coupled w/ years of experience, observation & additional learning prove to be very accurate & effective
I have a sister who is skinny and she sits around the house all day eatting junk food. I wouldn't suggest hiring her for a Personal Trainer at all if you want to look like her, especially if you arent as young as she is at 24. You won't look younger by hiring her, that is for sure! I think this advice of your trainer should look like how you want to look is very bad. You could give better advice on quality personal trainers tahta ctually helps people make informed decisions..
hey steve my name is sarah and i am 22 years old. I came across your videos. i love them! i am starting school to become a personal trainer and i definetley get what your saying about becoming one. Ive had a trainer that totally sucked and was a waste of seriously 1,000 dollars!! that makes me really want to be a good trainer and my knowledge of it it grow everyday and keep learning to become better everyday.
@sarahbuckley100 Pleasure to meet you. Yes, it's very frustrating & disappointing. Theres also more great info on my BlogTalkRadio show. Once there search Steve Turano. oh and alot of "personal trainers" at gyms look big cause they're juicers! so you can't always assume they know what they're talking about just cause they're big. i'm actually a pretty thin guy so some people assume i don't know much about exercise but it's not because of a lack of training.. it's the genes :/ but i'm still stronger than most people so it's whatev.. so what i'm saying is you can't judge a book by its cover..
i'm going to school for personal training and i've seen so many trainers in gyms that have no idea what they're doing! it's difficult to look at sometimes... they almost killed my uncle! he's barely starting to exercise and they had him doing supersets! all the lactic acid build up almost made him pass out..
at my university there are people who study 4 years to learn everything there is about working out, muscle anatomy, nutrition etc... and now it turns out it can be done by passing one or two tests! it's ridiculous! the people at my university take like 4 or 5 tests every year, all one specific subjects. there's a lot of science behind fitness.
majority of people want trainers for weight loss. Musculature is irrelevant, it's knowledge and general fitness. I'm a trainer who's an ectomorph with mostly slow twitch fibres so I have difficulty getting bulky, does that mean I can't train someone who has fast twitch fibres and teach them to get lean? Of course I can. But the guy who's already muscular wanting more probably doesn't need a trainer since hes already well on his way. at all.
@fitagent74" I'm a trainer who's an ectomorph with mostly slow twitch fibres so I have difficulty getting bulky does that mean I can't train someone who has fast twitch fibres and teach them to get lean?" no but i dont think an ectomorph with mostly slow twitch fibres would consider u as their PT
@fitagent74 Anybody can get muscular if they do the basics consistently and heavy. Sure some people may gain faster, and we all can't look like Ronnie Coleman,..but everyone can get muscular,..even Ectos.
@fitagent74 I would never, ever hire you because that first half is based on nothing. Did you have a doctor cut you up to see if somehow you have a problem with your muscles? And no one gets "bulky". That doesn't even really exist unless you are just fat. Which, from what I'm getting at, you are. If you are a powerlifter and overweight, and bench crazy weight, and I don't care how I look but I want to be a big shot powerlifter, I would hire you. Not for appearance purposes.
@fitagent74 There are people who are genetically inferior when it comes to building muscle. But saying your an ectomorph and its hard for you is a cop out. Building muscle is a hard slow process for most people no matter who you are. If somone is muscular, he worked hard for it. I would much rather workout with the muscular guy then the guy with excuses.
..its like saying a mechanic who builds nice expensive cars dont necessarily have to have a good car himself......its like you dont have to become a drug addict in order to tell people what the drugs will do to you if u get addicted...you know what i mean?
Yes, I certainly do. But I would want to learn from somebody who has done it. It's like reading a book about flying and airplane OR actually flying an airplane. Who would you rather take advice from?
but would u rather take an advise from a person who has thousands of flight hours or the person who has designed the plane and knows everything about it the person who has actually built it and know how every single aspect of it works. :)
hahaha, the argument sounds like the ufc tuff show when matt serra told marc lemon that he got a lot to say about fighting when he doesnt fight, ' your like an expert swimmer that never got in a pool'
I just graduated a 9 month school to be a personal fitness trainer. And will be taking the NSCA here soon. I did not want to take some crappy weekend course. Even with all I know. It's just a tiny percent. That's why it's a life long endeavour. And the NSCA requires it'smembers to constantly take classes and courses to stay fresh and updated. I owe it to the people I will soon be training for real.
Yes, personal trainers should always focus on continuing education. Learn more to earn more. Marketing, and sales too study should also be incorporated.
You don't even have to "pass some test" to call yourself a personal trainer in this country! But that doesn't mean there aren't some great ones out there, you just have to know how to find them!
yeah man, that's exactly I,m parroting to people...The same with doctors. Dont go to a doctor who has dirty nails, bad breath, look fat, smell like ashtray and their mouth is full of amalgam fillings..Plus ask them to name 3 foods which helps with HBP or diabetes. If the doctor wont give you the answer in a blink of an eye, well, you fire him too.
I agree with you to an extent. I grew up playing basketball and every coach ive ever had was fat. They used to run the HELL out of us. Make us work out etc while their fat ass was was coaching us on.
I dont remember what Video ..but im sure i said "Preach" because of the video and not because of an users comment,to which his comment was disgusting.
I agree somewhat,u have 2 get in the water 2 learn how 2 swim.
I have been training and competing at a high level since i was at childhood,i took my personal training certificates and it was with a very reputable certificated body,it was like going 2 kindergarden, the other people in the class had literally just jumped straight in and were going out into the industry with very little hands on experience....Scary..
he didnt say he was lean, he said if YOU want to be lean, and your trainer isnt lean, PERHAPS you should find a new trainer. He could be a power lifter, or he could be in a weight gain stage, or an off season. any one with any knowledge about this can easily see he has the build and mass to have proper lifting know-how, I am sure he knows about toning just as much as any one.
Dude, he is incredibly lean! Just b/c he's not a skinny little boy doesn't mean he's not lean... check out his other vids - he's got one with his shirt off to demonstrate that he walks the talk. He's got a six pack abs, and is very defined. He just has more muscles than you, that's all.
I am a certified personal trainer, this holds true with all professions not just personal training, you can have a 4 year degree but that doesnt meen your better at something than someone who doesnt. I agree most people think since they are certified they know it all, that takes a lifetime in this industry. Also if your going to be a personal tainer, look like it. if you cant do it for yourself, how can someone trust you to do it for them?
this maybe the case in america....but in england you have to study to get qualified. also, why does your trainer have to look like you want to be? maybe your trainer should look however he wants to be (ie; if a trainer is into his athletics and is therefore lean, and all you want to do is look muscle bound, does this mean the trainer would be no good to you?)
ok then you go find a strong trainer... if thats what matters for you... and in america it can be a very difficult test depending on where you get certed from
I completely agree with this, it is too easy for people to become personal trainers who really know very little, but there actually are personal training schools like the one i went to get certified where i was in class learning 20 hours every week, so my advice for people do some research and find out if your trainer really is credible with education and background.

most gyms are asking for a 4 year degree in kinesiology or anatomy if not a certification from a recognized association as such as NSCA, ACSM, ISSA. The couse of study is not easy. if a person understands human biology, anatomy, physiology at the college level it will help. I get your point, but everyone deserves a chance. If a pt with less experience than you asks you for help would you help them? We need both experience and little experience even MD's need training. pt's do too. it balances

Hey, i have a question. i'm 21, i don't have a GED or diploma, how could i get started on becoming a personal trainer? please respond, thank you :)
amberadrenalinetm 1 month ago
It's obvious America has very low standards for education. In Australia you MUST complete a certificate III in fitness to be an employee in the industry, further more you MUST complete an additional certificate IV to become a personal trainer. Both certificates are 16-32 weeks full-time in a college or training institute, if you fail the exams you DON'T get certified.
SIHTTLAEKR 2 months ago
Let's say a trainer with a four year degree has type I diabetes. Because he or she cannot efficiently utilize carbohydrates as energy, the body converts the spare carbohydrates into fat and as a result, a higher body fat composition is almost entirely unavoidable. Does that mean everyone should avoid that trainer? No! Also, gyms hire trainers without a degree to save money. This is a big reason why people die at the hands of uneducated trainers.
FormulaDStock 2 months ago
First of all i agree with the fact that most personal trainers only have a certification (and some of those certs are better than others) but there are some who actually have a B.S. Degree in Exercise Science... But as for if your trainer doesnt look the part, that really doesnt really matter. I wouldnt necessarily hire a morbidly obese trainer but just because they are not body builders doesnt mean they are not knowledgeable in personal training. P.S. Genetics plays its role too.

SERIOUS QUESTION:
I always wondered how personal trainers hide their erections when training a really hot chick. I talked to a couple of girls last time i was at the gym. I went to the restroom and had to beat it. I really wanna become trainer (I'm not a perv, I love health and helping people). But what do you guys wear? Jockstrap, jockeys, ?
Thanx.

Becoming a PT for men these days is getting as common as it is for females who do rubbish at school and become hairdressers!
teamfroch 7 months ago
@teamfroch excepta PT makes 3 times as much as a hair dresser(if he knows what he's doing), you can't really compare the 2 in any way because of that fact alone. It may be common to 'become' a PT since it's pretty easy to get certified, but to stay in the industry for the long run and thrive instead of getting swallowed up within the first year isn't common at all. You can become a registered professional fighter by taking a medical exam but with no training you are going to get killed.
oOIZodiacIOo 3 months ago
I agree with most everything you are saying. It should be up to the discretion of the trainee whether or not to use said trainer. There are many industries full of fakes, I work in the tattoo industry and know this all too well. Healthy diet and exercise is all people need. I have always found it funny that many nurses and doctors, people who we put our utmost trust in with our health are overweight and unhealthy alot of the time.
outcastXVX 7 months ago
@outcastXVX It's true that many nurses and doctors are overweight and unhealthy. It's the ultimate irony. Before the laws were passed, drug companies could give doctors tickets to baseball games or special vacation deals as long as the doctors prescribe their drugs. I'm not saying that all doctors are that bad. But, seriously, some doctors are the ultimate hypocrites.

what about a degree on exercise science that will take me about 2 years minimum. how is that diferent from those certificates that just take about 6 months.
pvsg1990 7 months ago
@pvsg1990 Getting BS or higher degree in an exercise/fitness related field will provide you with the practical knowledge to pass any of these exams with flying colors. I have a BS in exercise science and I took the NSCA and really only studied for a few weeks because I already knew much of the information. You can easily study for any of these exams for a couple months and get the cert and call yourself a CPT. It's just that you will more easily be able to market yourself to the public..
steverunsxc 6 months ago
@pvsg1990 and most fitness centers won't hire you without a certification anyway. What's the harm anyway besides a few hundred bucks (you're already paying thousands in school loans) for a few hours of multiple choice questions. I would definitely go for the degree + certification
steverunsxc 6 months ago
@steverunsxc thanks for the reply. Yeah i found 2 private schools that offer this. One is brian college here in downtown LA in california in which offers a associates degree in exercise science and a certification which i believe is the acsm. This is the nature of a profession in human services. In effect you are selling yourself to the consumers.

Why pay for someone who is not in better shape then you are.
ohara3762 9 months ago

Its all me

I think a good personal trainer needs severelar things: A good understanding about biochemistry (which most don't) some understanding of basic physics (how to excert more force etc) and should have taken a class in human anatomy. If he is also lean and muscular that's even better because it shows he has experience

The problem with personal training is the Gyms. 99% of the gyms underpay good trainers and hire shit ones.
c8h3p 1 year ago
I agree with 95% of what you said but I have to say that the N.S.C.A-C.P.T and C.S.C.S are great certifications and are 1 ( of only 2 I believe) that are nationally accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, and are very in depth and great courses. But I totally agree that most trainers just do it cause it's easy and little of them actually help people! Keep up the good advice! P.S Can I ask where you were certified and what is your background??
zaytony 1 year ago
@zaytony Im an AFPA CPT w/25 yrs of experience w/strength & weight training at elite levels. Also have a background in biology & chemistry. Over the years Ive gain knowledge through studies of experts in the field of weight loss & fitness like Covert Bailey (degrees Harvard & MIT) & James Levine M.D., doctor & weight loss scientist at Mayo Clinic. This knowledge coupled w/ years of experience, observation & additional learning prove to be very accurate & effective

@zaytony Hey i was wondering have you herd of the Can-Fit program cause i was going to take that one to get my personal training certificate ?

I have a sister who is skinny and she sits around the house all day eatting junk food. I wouldn't suggest hiring her for a Personal Trainer at all if you want to look like her, especially if you arent as young as she is at 24. You won't look younger by hiring her, that is for sure! I think this advice of your trainer should look like how you want to look is very bad. You could give better advice on quality personal trainers tahta ctually helps people make informed decisions..

oh and alot of "personal trainers" at gyms look big cause they're juicers! so you can't always assume they know what they're talking about just cause they're big. i'm actually a pretty thin guy so some people assume i don't know much about exercise but it's not because of a lack of training.. it's the genes :/ but i'm still stronger than most people so it's whatev.. so what i'm saying is you can't judge a book by its cover..

True!

i'm going to school for personal training and i've seen so many trainers in gyms that have no idea what they're doing! it's difficult to look at sometimes... they almost killed my uncle! he's barely starting to exercise and they had him doing supersets! all the lactic acid build up almost made him pass out..
NotProgramedToFeel 1 year ago
It's unfortunate but trainers like that are in every gym in America! Morons!

at my university there are people who study 4 years to learn everything there is about working out, muscle anatomy, nutrition etc... and now it turns out it can be done by passing one or two tests! it's ridiculous! the people at my university take like 4 or 5 tests every year, all one specific subjects. there's a lot of science behind fitness.

majority of people want trainers for weight loss.

Thx
crismesa 1 year ago
@fitagent74 Anybody can get muscular if they do the basics consistently and heavy. Sure some people may gain faster, and we all can't look like Ronnie Coleman,..but everyone can get muscular,..even Ectos.
p90x4lifewaswrong22 1 year ago
@fitagent74 I would never, ever hire you because that first half is based on nothing. Did you have a doctor cut you up to see if somehow you have a problem with your muscles? And no one gets "bulky". That doesn't even really exist unless you are just fat. Which, from what I'm getting at, you are. If you are a powerlifter and overweight, and bench crazy weight, and I don't care how I look but I want to be a big shot powerlifter, I would hire you. Not for appearance purposes.
gunstarhero2006 1 year ago
@fitagent74 There are people who are genetically inferior when it comes to building muscle. But saying your an ectomorph and its hard for you is a cop out. Building muscle is a hard slow process for most people no matter who you are. If somone is muscular, he worked hard for it. I would much rather workout with the muscular guy then the guy with excuses.

..its like saying a mechanic who builds nice expensive cars dont necessarily have to have a good car himself......its like you dont have to become a drug addict in order to tell people what the drugs will do to you if u get addicted...you know what i mean?
shottadipset 2 years ago
Yes, I certainly do. But I would want to learn from somebody who has done it. It's like reading a book about flying and airplane OR actually flying an airplane. Who would you rather take advice from?
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
but would u rather take an advise from a person who has thousands of flight hours or the person who has designed the plane and knows everything about it the person who has actually built it and know how every single aspect of it works. :)

Marketing, and sales too study should also be incorporated.
fit2max 2 years ago
You don't even have to "pass some test" to call yourself a personal trainer in this country! But that doesn't mean there aren't some great ones out there, you just have to know how to find them!
JonnyFitnessNYC 2 years ago
yeah man, that's exactly I,m parroting to people...The same with doctors.

Good points, nice vid, but like cardioworks said: "you have to get in the water to learn how to swim".
ImNotReallyaDoctor 2 years ago
I agree somewhat,u have 2 get in the water 2 learn how 2 swim.
I have been training and competing at a high level since i was at childhood,i took my personal training certificates and it was with a very reputable certificated body,it was like going 2 kindergarden, the other people in the class had literally just jumped straight in and were going out into the industry with very little hands on experience....Scary..

he didnt say he was lean, he said if YOU want to be lean, and your trainer isnt lean, PERHAPS you should find a new trainer. He could be a power lifter, or he could be in a weight gain stage, or an off season. any one with any knowledge about this can easily see he has the build and mass to have proper lifting know-how, I am sure he knows about toning just as much as any one.
tjh1127 2 years ago 2

GetFitwithJR 3 years ago
this maybe the case in america....but in england you have to study to get qualified. also, why does your trainer have to look like you want to be? maybe your trainer should look however he wants to be (ie; if a trainer is into his athletics and is therefore lean, and all you want to do is look muscle bound, does this mean the trainer would be no good to you?)
jimma316 3 years ago
ok then you go find a strong trainer... if thats what matters for you... and in america it can be a very difficult test depending on where you get certed from

I completely agree with this, it is too easy for people to become personal trainers who really know very little, but there actually are personal training schools like the one i went to get certified where i was in class learning 20 hours every week, so my advice for people do some research and find out if your trainer really is credible with education and background.
