@1430sl It depends on the tuning of the instrument. This is a C/G hurdy-gurdy, which means the open string sounds a G and what looks like the C key on the piano sounds a C. But there are A/E instruments (typical in Hungary) in which case the “C” key sounds an A (the music is often noted in C, so it's a transposing instrument) and G/D instruments from France where the open string sounds a D and the “C” key makes a G. In terms of relative sales, it's just like a piano, but absolute pitches vary.
@1430sl It is similar, but the action is very different (pushed inward/upward) from a piano. But if you do play piano, the keyboard is very easy to get used to.
hi.One of the the things that make my hurdy-gurdy sounds horrible is the same that happens to you. Sometimes gut strings do this, but it can be also the bridge. Are you sure that the bridge is good placed? If the bridge's contact with the soundboard is not good, then can happens this. See you!
Hi Geoff. It actually was taken care of by, of all things, popping up the nut under the string and reseating it in what appeared to be the same positions. I have no idea why that took care of it, but swapping strings had actually had no impact at all, even though it was one of the first things I tried.
kinda reminds me of a turret from portal :D

ya. i was about to say your string is a hair lower than the others. i guess "popping up the nut" fixed it.

Have you tried replacing the string? I had a similar problem that went away once the string was replaced. Geoff
