This is by far the best version of this song, but an honorable mention has to go to The Fatima Mansions! The mighty Cathal Coughlan's voice suits it perfectly, and the band play a blinder.
it's funny cos I did not know this song but heard it on bowies cd and thought, wow, finally a good recent bowie song - and now it turns out to be a cover version, lol. fantastic song!
I still think that Bowie was influenced by Scott Walker and many have missed this point. Throw in a bit of Roxy Music / Eno for good measure too. But this track is from 1978- and after Low & Heroes. Vocally Bowie did change his singing style mid to late 1970's and the influence was for me Walker. Musically here though, I think the Bowie / Eno/ Visconti sound had an effect on Walker's career. This track is so derivative of the track Heroes imo that cross pollination is so obviously evident..

I love the first 4 tracks off of Nite Flights when Scott is singing, but I find the songs when the other Walker Brother is singing and writing to be cheesy and nowhere near deserving to accompany the rest of the CD. Does anyone else find this extreme difference?
It was a democratic project, but the sequencing choice makes this a very unbalanced record. It all starts so electrifying, and then slowly peters out. The Gary Leeds contributions are plain awful. Scott should have reserved his Night Flight songs for a solo project. Perhaps one teamed up with Bowie.
Bowie' Low came out in 1977, Nite Flights in 1978. So, it's more the other way around. This time Bowie influenced Scott. To me it seems that Bowie's attitude of singing, how he's using his voice, was influenced earlier on by Scott, by his 60's output. Anyway, Nite Flights is top notch in it's style and unique. Electrician goes far beyond of what Bowie made in the Berlin-era. But I'm happy I got both in my collection. These were the dark, experimental, ambitous 70's... pure atmosphere.
exactly, and it's easy to see where (aside from Neu!) a lot of Bowie's Berlin sound came from in listening to Scott's songs on Nite Flights. Again, I'm a huge Bowie fan.
@Generatorhead I hear your relation to Station to Station in this song
about Bowie's Low and Hereos, I hear influences from Scott's earlier stuff, like Boy Child
Bowie had been a fan of Walker for some time, doing his version of Brel's "My Death" in the early 70's after Walker did an amazing version in the late 60's
The thinking man's psychedelic pop song. The dark undercurrents in Scott's later work are already evident here (as in the superb "The Electrician", also from this album) , his majestic voice sounding anguished and somewhat alien.
Well, I admit I prefer his late 60's/early 70's solo works, but "The Drift" (2006) will let you in a whole new dimension, if you're willing to give it a try. Even if you don't like it much, you'l be sucked into the man's genius. :)
thanks for posting! like the comment below i kept listening to this over & over. I really wanted this album on cd but it was discontinued by the manufacturers. fortunately itunes have it on sale. you reminded me of what a great album this is & hence a well-worth purchase was made. now off to find the LP version!
I've listened to this on replay several times, great song. I originally heard Bowie's cover on the Black Tie White Noise album. I do prefer this one though.
this is awesome :) I actually prefer this to bowie's but bowie did a good job too :)

What came first, the Walker or the Bowie? The Walker. That's why we love Bowie so much. But let us not forget Scott Walker.

Totally agree, Bowie was miles off unfortunately,
and I am a big fan of his also
paddy9i99 1 year ago
@Isolar
But Low and Heroes were both released in '77 while Nite Flights was recorded and released in '78.
I do hear the similarity, but to me this sounds more like Scott Walker's take on Station To Station.
Having said that, I agree this original version bests Bowie's take.
