I've read this book called The Ethico-Religious Concepts in the Qur'an by Toshihiko Izutsu; and according to him, a non-Muslim, Kuffar in the Qur'an actually mean "ingrate." So, even an insincere Muslim could me a kafr.

That is like saying that using the word n----r is no big deal because orginally it wasn't meant as a pejorative. Kafir is also translated as "rejector" as in rejector of Islam. Kufr means to "cover up" or in fact deceive. So unless you are rejecting that Islam is the truth then calling you a Kafir would likely lead to befuddled stares I think.
