The prolouge would have shown the character of miner Brewster forcing Bigelow (played in the film by Alec Guiness) to go to the vault as the ship was sinking and locking himself inside.
Keep in mind, up until it was discovered in 1985, the accepted idea was that the ship went down in one piece. There was talk of it breaking up on the surface but they were dismissed as incorrect in the chaos, it wasn't until it was found the truth came out.
I really enjoyed seeing this. As a child I was very let down when i saw the movie "Raise the Titanic" ... I remember that the only 'impressive' scene was when the ship itself was raised - and even then I noticed flaws w/the liner. This footage is awesome. I hope that the 1997 movie is NOT the LAST in a long line of Titanic films. The "Jack & Rose" story bores me every time ...
Technically it did, but not to the extent seen in these segments. The 4th funnel is commonly known as the "dummy funnel" due to the fact it is not connected to any of the boilers. But the 4th funnel was used for ventilation and contained the vent flu for the 3rd class galley and smokingroom fireplace. There is atleast one photograph I know too that shows the 4th funnel exhausting smoke on the real Titanic.
yeah, as a reader for a long time of the Titanic history, i knew it. But in this video, the way that's exhaling is like the other 3 funnels, and that's is wrong. It could exhale smoke, but not from the boilers. thanks for answer (:
This footage was really well composed; it reflects the era of cinema and film making prior to its creation. It seems to have been romantically edited to make a type of segway from the past to present had they kept in the film. Despite a few design errors in the model, I think it could have been quit effective in drawing in the audiences interest. But overall, This film segment is quit impressive; it reminds me of the film techniques used in 'A Night To Remember' and 'TITANIC' from 1953.
Awesome Re Working of the Footage, It Gives Us An Idea Of What It Might Have Looked Like With The Music, I Wish They Kept it In, Might Have Made The Movie A LITTLE better, Show Titanic MORE Than They Did You Know What i mean?
Hmmm Inspiring Clip, i think I'm Going To Watch The Movie Later On. :)
If they kept the Prologue segment along with the final cut, it would've caused a Continuity problem because of the tall cowling vents that was later added to the RTT's bow. It would've been too expensive to reshoot the intro anyway and the liner ATHINAI was the only ship they could get after the owners of the Queen Mary turned them down.
Hehe, I wish I was. I know who it is, but I dont want to name names ;) . I have tried on a couple of occasions to obtain a copy of that 12 minute prologue, but with no luck.
@RaiseTheTitanic1980 Thats so sad.I think that this collector should share it with all Titanic enthusiasts.Thank god we have collectors and historians like you to share and give information.
The FX department really did over-do-it with that sinking prologue. Not only is she venting too much smoke, but there is FAR too much ice on her fo'castle from the iceberg, sparks flying from the funnels, and a bad pyratechnic when the funnel collapses. Notice the badly rigged explosive charge when the funnel falls. You see it arc in the sky. . . . Now wonder Lew Grade scrapped this.
I noticed that the first funnel had sparks coming out of the top and later the second funnel has it. There must' have been one point during the shooting of the Prologue that the decision was made to move the explosive charges from the first funnel to the second funnel.
I'm sure that was what the FX crew were aiming at. If you thought the cutscenes of the Titanic looked creepy, I remember reading one of the draft from the late RTT website that had creepy echo to Joshua Hayes Brewster's voice (the man who locked himself in the Titanic's cargo hold) as he's saying, "Thank God for Southby."
Sadly it was never shot (along with other cutscenes of actors of the Titanic), because of budget reasons.
The "flickering" of the Morse lamps on the wing cabs is a great touch in those scenes I think.

Really? Really? There's parts of the iceberg literally coating the forecastle deck at 0:48. Really?

Wish they would have kept that in the movie!

Interesting footage for an interesting flick. A new production or a reshoot today would be pretty interesting.

I hope that a decent Reigon 1 release of this movie happens, especially if it is bluray!
All we have hear is a Full-screen double feature (I hate pan and scan)...

Dont forget, when the prologue was filmed in late 1979, they were still yet to hire a ship for the onboard scenes.

Also when the funnel collapses a boat rope snaps and sends all the passengers of it on the sea . In 1:08 it is the only boat being lowered .
