Every time I hear this theme, the images come whirling back; of a beautiful cheetah named Sonya and her wonderful purr, strolling into the bath area to lick soap bubbles off the actress's leg :o) Quite enthralling to an 11year old lad in '62.
I'll never forget the night I went to see this...I was 12 or 13 years old at the time when it first came out. If you ever get the chance to see it on the big screen go for it.
Mancini was a master in his day and just about everything he touched turned to gold.
I remember when the film first came out, my dad went out a bought the soundtrack album, and we played the grooves off of it. my folks were big H. Mancini fans. I think this theme track was my favorite of all and i believe it does indeed capture something primal and beautifully sinister about Mother Africa
Jesus said, " he that has seen Me has seen the Father. The Father and I are one."(both paraphrased) To know and search for the Father is to know Jesus, the Christ! I do not agree with you the Father is GREATER than the Son. They have different roles. There is no other name given under heaven by which we must be saved.(paraphrased)
The score fit perfectly. You need to understand that this movie was not just an action film and a love story. But it was also a lament for the passing of "wild" Africa
when I was young I had big dreams. Success thoghts of riches you know what I mean. I thought I could rule the world. Then it happened. I got married to what I thought a fine girl. She broke my spirit broke my heart. Took my kids I fell apart. She ruined my dreams and crushed all ambition. Seems to be a common condition. No more dreams by the phone as I listen to this all alone.
@JacksSonKenny So sorry for your troubles. The GREAT healer, Creator and King, Lord Jesus Christ, can save you and restore you. Call on His Name and He will come to you. Roman 10:9-10.
@PVcat1 LORD JESUS CHIRST IS OUR LORD BUT WHEN THE DISCIPLES ASK FROM HIM ABOUT THE DAY OF JUDJMENT HE SAID-NOR THE ANGELS NOR THE SON OF MAN KNOWS-ONLY THE FATHER WHO IS GREATHER THAN ME KNOWS.WEB ARE ALL FORGETTING THE FATHER AND JESUS CHRIST IS VERY SAD SEEING THAT WE DONT KNOW THE FATHER AND ARE THINKING THAT HE IS THE FATHER.PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT HE SAID- IM THE TRUTH THE LIFE AND THE WAY TO THE FATHER WHO IS GREATER THAN MYSELF.LETS SEARCH FOR THE FATHER!
To me, there were foreboding overtones in the movie; they were seamlessly integrated with the comedy and human interaction to make this a very well-balanced movie. The "warning" tones of the theme highlight the risks that the crew took to bring in the animals--remember The Indian being gored by the rhino and the herding-car that flipped over onto the German and Chips? This was one of the few non-western John Wayne movies that I truly enjoyed. The post was wonderful--thanks for putting it up!
I remember back in the 60's I had many of these records...I'd spend hours listening to them.. I don't remember what ever happened to them but I wish I had them now.
An alltogether great movie theme, capturing ALL that is Africa. There's a foreboding sound here, presenting a mood that was not in this lighthearted John Wayne film.
I only wish they could release the actual music cues from the films Hatari!, Pink Panther, Charade, Breakfast at Tiffany's, et cetera, and not just the studio rerecordings. I tend to find the "Music from" albums slightly watered down from Mancini's soundtrack counterparts. (Here for instance, the drums are not as pronounced as they were during Hatari's title credits). I guess RCA was worried about its 1962 audience.

The original RC A contract is making release of original tracks albums difficult. In later life Mancini regretted the RCA deal.

Epic song, and I'm not a big fan of movies from 30+ years ago or movies in general.
However, this is one of the bests.

@DrumSet701 Really? I'm glad you liked this one. Have you heard the theme to "The Tamarind Seed"? Beautiful and timely.

Excellent observation about the theme and the movie...didn't quite fit, did they?
But Mancini wrote a beautiful piece of music.
