I think perhaps some of the subtle themes in this song are lost when sung with such a perky demeanor.

I think of this as a somewhat of a sad song. Note the lyrics "out of the dark that fills my mind."

You are an attractive person, but for a sad song like this the winking, eyebrow raising etc detracts a little from the video.

Consider a Damien Rice song, they would not have the same effect if he was smiling.
