I just learned this off the record and compared it to the rootwitch tab. There are a couple of mistakes in the tab. In the "verse" after the intro, those chords are filled, they don't use the open 2nd (C) string there. They are essentially triads...
also, if you are interested in doing it this way, the pattern he is using is very similar to what he's doing in the "Woman Of The World" video. It's the "Michael Hedges picking pattern" lol, he uses it on almost everything.
say, didn't you say you were going to upload another video of this song on a better camera? you definately should, this video has been a great help to me, i'd love to see an updated version. you rule, minnesota rules, and michael hedges rules!
@drakescott1111 Thank you very much! I searched for months for a tab of this song before i stumbled on rootwich.com. Awesome site fyi. Then i banged at it for a couple months, this song was at the time very challenging and used techniques i never thought possible so i was pretty motivated to recreate it! Im out in Minneapolis MN
I love this song, it's like Hedges showing off his harmonic knowledge, common tone, ECM records shit. It's a great tune... you're playin well, and good to see you hip to my boy Andy as well... Post some originals!!! I want to hear what YOU have to say on the instrument...
Thank you for your feedback Andrew, believe me i want to hear what i have to say too..unfortunately the World of Warcraft has overtaken a lot of my free time and motivation to practice... really i need to quit WoW and buckle down and do scales exercises and perfect my style, but i'm a fricken slacker man!! don't worry tho..its still my dream to be a master guitarist someday, even if i'm never famous, i just love playing guitar!
You obviously have the technical tools to be a great guitarist!!! I know, WoW is amazing, and it can be lucrative if your character is sweet enough... scales aren't going to do you much good as a composer, unless you are not familiar with the way the scales sound and interact with each other. One day you'll walk around and be humming a melody. Don't doubt it, that melody is yours, and write something great with it! It'll be a great piece! And you let me know when you get there!
recently I heard a story about a dude who took shits in his socks and threw them in the closet for lengths of time so that he didn't have to take a break from WoW
@jazzpsalti hahahaha well im glad my addiction never took me that far..although ive definitely pinched a few loaves in the middle of raids and bgs...maybe i do need to quit
Hey great news guys! The MH site, rootwich is back! Its a really great resource for anything MH related, including rare tabs such as this awesome song, and its to this site i owe thanks for helping me figure it out. Rootwichdotcom, check it out!
I appreciate the feedback! i can play the song a little better now, im going to repost all my songs and a few more once i get a better cam and a better amp...also, i figured out the reason why i was breakin so many strings was cause i was stringin it wrong! now its a breeze lol
Yeah pretty much, i wasnt giving it enough slack, and now i stretch the strings out really good after i get them on, really increases their flexibility!
Thank you! Keep on playing youll get it, this song took me a couple months to get down playing it everyday and i still dont sound as good as mike by a long shot...
Thank you! It's DAEGCD really interesting tuning, careful when u tune the D up to E, ive broken a few strings, but its fun to mess around with! If u have any questions about the song i can do my best to help
This is great Brendan!!!! One of my favourite M.H. tunes!!! You did a wonderful job!!5* Congratulation! PS: I imagine you have the windham hill cd right? :-) Great CD!!!
Java Man is also my favourite tune from Hedges, & he's the second instrumental acoustic guitarist I discovered from Windham Hill. I gotta say though, you did a great job on this man, real nice :D
very good ear you've got there! noce work. i didn't realise this was called Java Man. I got it off limewire and it was called the album name, Sounds of wood and steel. thanks
Yo, great job figuring this out. It sounds damn perfect. If you tabbed it out, I'll trade for justin king or bela fleck tabs that i've worked out over the past few years. If not, I'll just figure it out from your vid. Great work.
I got a tab online from James Roosas rootwitch website, but it no longer exists :( I dont have it anymore unfortunately, sorry man but if your having any trouble figuring any of it out i can do my best to expalain!
Low to high its DAEGCD tune strings 1 and 6 down to D string 2 up to C and string 4 up to E, which can be a pain, I use Elixers med gauge for this because they dont seem to break as much, tune it very slowly or youll break the string :) sometimes i just tune everything down a half step to lessen the strain =P its a really fun tuning actually, i mess around with it everytime i get new strings
Wow, amazing man. And you figured it our by ear, everything down to the strumming techinque. BTW, what do you think of Steve Steven's Sadhana track on the SoW&S album?
Thank you! I wish i could learn something this complicated by ear! I actually found what must be the only transcription available on the web by James Roosa, but the site doesnt exist anymore :( I loved all the music on SoW&S, Sadhana being one of my favorites for sure

How did you string your guitar wrong? Not enough windes around the nut or something?
