  • Well one of my fav's but destroied by the Speed, pity.

  • @8BigEd8 You really think so? I agree it does seem a little fast perhaps compared to most other performances (no idea what the marking actually is) but the fluidity and baroque interpretation of the performers (esp. that gorgeous trumpet) allow it to sit surprisingly well with me, they just make it seem natural. So I feel like it's fast but there's nothing awkward or destructive about the speed at all, in fact I rather like it!

  • Próba i tyle...

  • Why didn't you include the name of the trumpet soloist who does wonders on a natural trumpet here?

  • @barliman2001 I don't know who it is! If I find out, I will add it in! He or she is fabulous...

  • @barliman2001 I found it! The wonderful trumpet soloist is Neil Brough!

  • @SsteinwayS Very awsome, that trumpet performance! And a bit daunting - I'm due to play that selfsame solo tomorrow morning...

  • @barliman2001 Good luck! :) Beautiful cantata, and ideal for the holiday season. :)

  • The fact that what I'm seeing is in C and what I'm hearing is in B is tripping me out a little bit. Does anyone know if there's a recording on YouTube or anywhere online that's performed in the key of C?

  • @betando It's performed in the key of C, but because they're using Baroque instruments, they're tuned a semitone lower, in the spirit of "period performance". :) Does that help?

  • @SsteinwayS - Thank you, it does! I actually performed with a Baroque recorder orchestra that used this tuning after posting that comment and had an "aha!" moment-- definitely clears things up! :)

  • @betando You're very welcome! :)

  • @SsteinwayS It disorients me very much, becuase I have an «absolute pitch» (see wikipedia for details, if necessary). I have got to say to myself «Yes, it is C, although it sounds like B».

  • @KrivitskyM I know, it makes everything sort of strange...I have synesthesia so going from C to B major is a big change for me...turns everything from white to brown... :P

  • * because

  • One of my favorites Arias, one of the most difficult, but not quiet fond of this rendition

  • @alonelychild That's unfortunate...but it is a great aria! Very thrilling and jubilant.

  • @SsteinwayS Don't get me wrong, it is very well performed, and I enjoyed hearing a lot. I just kept in my heart the memory of an old one I heard years ago that was outstanding

  • @alonelychild As they say, you never forget your first... :)

  • woops my mistake on the date. guess i was just trying to be positive. i dont know a lot of background information in Natalie Dessay i just know that some of her performances, including her "jauchzet Gott" sound like shes straining, comapred to her "les oiseaux dans la charmille." I guess i just assumed her surgery was the reason.

  • @LiyahLova I do because I'm a big fan! And yes this recording is from 2008-2009. She is straining at the top because of her surgery. She "got rid" of her top notes above high E. Though she is planning to do Olympia again in the future as part of the complete Hoffmann roles! She has done a lot of lower roles recently...her lower register is stronger now at least in my opinion. It's a marvel she can still sing after two surgeries and lots of rehab! :O

  • @SsteinwayS she said her Olympia will be transposed down, but she's still doing it! should be interesting.

  • @FoxyGrandpa I know eh! Very very interesting...she will be able to fool people into thinking her Olympia "still has the high G" haha

  • @FoxyGrandpa Apparently she's set to sing all 4 ladies sometime next year....that should be interesting. It would be amazing if she didn't transpose Olympia and did all 4. I think at that point I would just die of amazement and happiness.

  • go watch kathleen battle sing it. i like the key better and the notes have some fluidity, rather than staccato all the time like Dessay, even though I love her. I mean the piece is supposed to contrast the playful and bouncy tone of the orchestra by being a bit more legato, thats what i think, cuz the song's about praising god lol. anyway, good job Dessay, even though you just had surgery.

  • @LiyahLova Mmmm...this was from last year. She had surgeries in the early 2000's ;) It's a personal preference - I like Kathleen Battle's more legato sound, but she has some issues with breath control. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses...

  • @SsteinwayS thats kinda why i said "thats what i think." knowing that ive studied a lot of J. S. Bach's works and his background/history, i guess i'd prefer she take musicianship license while following what most editions of the cantata have written in: ritmico, not staccato. guess my background about her surgery is off but u can call my analysis personal preference, or respect to the composer. Battle's "breath control" is lack of time to prepare between phrases thanks to the tempo lol

  • Come on people it's a c clef for soprano which means c is on the first line of the staff.

seriously where did you get an education that has given you permission to so incorrectly self righteous. I challenge you to make any music as well as this soprano.

thank you to the poster - the clef question just shows the posters lack of education and height of hubris.

  • @ubercontralto Hehe...I'm happy when people are at least actually thinking when they go on YouTube, even if they're wrong! :)

  • What the hell clef is that notation supposed to be in? it's a third higher than the score would be in treble clef. There is no way she is singing that high. The line runs up to a high C at the climax, and there's a clear E on the note. Is this a computer generated score? better check your settings.

  • @manthasagittarius No it's a real score...and if you had read the video description before you had posted...you wouldn't have needed that last comment :) But yes you're right, her post-surgery voice doesn't get that high anymore so easily! :( Sorry this isn't in the treble clef, but this is the only public domain-ish score I could get, and it's from the Baroque era, so...sometimes we don't always get the treble clef :(

  • @SsteinwayS The problem is that you cut the clef and key signatures off, so there is no way to tell. It has really nothing to do with pre- or post-surgery, it has to do with the key the piece was composed and is always performed in.

Sure you didn't alter your comment field after I posted? :)

  • @manthasagittarius I can tell if it's her pre-surgery voice or not, so I know it's a C. :) But that's because I'm a Dessay expert. :P And no, I didn't. You wanna check all the other uploads? "Ich habe genug" was in the bass clef and I put a note in those uploads too...some people don't bother reading all their descriptions, do they? hehe...I guess it can be irritating, but I honestly did put a note in because I am a musician myself, and these little things bug me too...

  • @manthasagittarius But just to let you know, it's still the same key in the soprano clef, it just depends on how it's notated (you probably know that though). You just can't tell because I conveniently chopped off the time and key signatures for the soprano line as you said...but it was because there were a whole bunch of rests before the soprano actually came in, so it would be pointless to include everything.

  • Thanks Juma :)

  • thx mike for sharing..i love it!

  • Thank you - I'm glad you love it too!

  • @sevenender No problem! :)

  • Thanks for the great upload.....

    Excellent : ]

  • Thank you! It helps when the performer is so amaaaazing!

  • awesome

  • Thank you - Dessay takes 99% of the credit, of course!

  • super video :-))

  • Thank you!

  • I love it :-))

  • Me too :)

  • I love Natalie, but that's too way fast for me.

  • Not for me :)

  • yay! nice to have the score! but....don't you think it's becoming a little bit dangerous for you to upload CDs? you should be careful ^^

  • It is! Let's keep it secret :) But I love doing these scrolling score things!

  • yeah this must be a nice thing to do! but I don't think I have the patience! Adding subtitles is already horrible so adding the score...xD

  • It is! I love it, but yeah it's so pain-staking...I can only really do it with pieces I really love, like Bach or Mozart :)

  • yeah...imagine you were forced to do it with a music you hate! ^^

  • Well, that will never happen because I always choose myself what I want to do! :) Hehe...I would definitely hate doing a score for someone like that Marlis Peterson! I hate her so much...I saw Marion's video of her mad scene, and it drove me mad how bad it was!! :(

  • you hate her? what did she do for that? and yeah I saw your comments xD and I didn't like Petersen's mad scene either....not because she's replacing Natalie and all that....because it really wasn't nice to the ears at the end ^^

but imagine you have to do it or else you'll be cursed and every time you hear music Petersen's voice will mysteriously come out instead of the other person's voice...would you do it? xD

  • Yes I do! Not only did she "steal" (OK, she was probably forced to do it) the role from Dessay, but she's a horrid singer! Anyway...if Dessay's voice in these cantatas changed to Petersen's...that would be... :O Freaky! I would definitely not do it...AHHH!!! Now I'll have nightmares! :P

  • You hate her for doing something nice? xDDD be nice to her...or you'll be cursed! xDDD

  • Oh no!! But it's not nice...at least not for the ears...jeje :)

  • not for the ears...but for the rest it's veeeery nice! xD

  • Yeah, I guess so! I'm still bitter about missing out on my Dessay Hamlet experience at the Met this year :( Now I don't even want to go near this year's Hamlet at the Met!! I want Dessay! But she's sick :(

  • poor Marlis ^^ we're being bad ^^ but well...I can bear seeing photos of her in this production and listening to her so I'm not that affected by all this xD

  • Yes we are! But you...you're such a traditore! :O I'm shocked! I think she's awful...but it could be the obvious bias I have!

  • oh! I'm not! xD I accept to see it because people who compare are normally going to say Natalie is better....and with the Diana or Ciofi blind fans Natalie doesn't have that advantage ^^

  • True...but they still admit she's amazing! :)

  • because she is! ^^

  • Exactly :)

  • omg! first time i hear a trumpet trill!! Dessay's voice is amazing for baroque! especially back then before the operation :)

  • Yeah, trumpet trills are really unique! But you do realize that this recording is from last year...?

  • well...technically it's 2 years ago since she recorded it in February-March 2008 ^^

  • It was released last year, but technically, yes, she recorded it in 2008! I thought that she recorded it in the winter of 2008 though?

  • well yeah, but winter 2008 can mean winter 2007-2008 and winter 2008-2009...in this case it was 2007-2008 ^^

  • Wasn't it winter 2008-2009?

  • I reaaaally really doubt that, since the CD came out in october 2008 and this wasn't winter 2008-2009 yet xD

  • I don't remember...for us it was January 2009 so it could still be possible :) But yes I think you're right because I did that BBC interview, and she said she was going to record it and that was from February 1/08 :)

  • tadammmm then there is your answer..right? ^^

  • lol...it's hard to tell here because everything's released later :(

  • yeah but with some research you get everything you want ^^

  • Too true! :) L'Internet these days...amazing!

  • viva internet!! xD

  • Oui, oui! :)

  • @SsteinwayS

OMG!!!!! her singing here sounds just like it used to sound 12 years ago!! and i mean it in a good way! incredible!

  • Oh my goodness! You didn't realize that this was from last year? I don't think people realize how beautiful voice still is! I think it's in some ways even better now because it has a new lyrical quality that I really love :)

  • @SsteinwayS

of course her voice is better in some ways! it's darker, deeper and more "serious"! now she can sing Lucia and violetta! so yeah, her voice is better, it's just that I had never heard her singing such fast coloraturas and notes above soprano high C which sound so natural and effortless AFTER her operation so that's why i assumed this was before O_o....so it seems that Natalie's voice has recovered pretty much! i also noticed that in her last Amina

  • I agree...before, she had a really clear, bell-like voice, especially in the higher range...and it's amazing, because we're starting to hear that here too! Aren't you surprised?? It's pretty amazing. I think Bach was a smart choice because it's not as high (like with people doing high E's and F's in Handel), but it's more lyrical and still exciting. She made a good choice! I think she's probably learned to use her voice differently now too! Good work, Natalie! :)

  • Amen :P

  • Hehe :) Indeed...Bach was deeply spiritual :)
