Hi. I take full responsibility for my own actions (as we all should), I even critisise myself in this very video if you watch it to the end. I'm not perfect, I don't claim to be, but I try hard to be safe. My choice of vehicle is irrelevant, don't assume I only cycle.
Calling somebody a moron does nothing to further any argument you may have. Stay safe, and drive safely.
You are cycling like a fucking idiot (especially between the 2 buses, and between two lanes of slow-moving traffic) yet you think you look hard done by on YouTube?
am i missing something... you are fast riding a bike between 2 lanes in very heavy traffic and you blame the car drivers.. maybe in UK its ok but not in the US ... how do you think they can see you coming?
@belfast479 Ah missed this comment. If you read the text in the video I do hold my hand up to filtering too quickly. But it's not illegal to filter, and it's a common misconception to think it is. It's classed as overtaking and is legal when the traffic is stationary or slow moving. The HighwayCode is explicit in putting the onus on car drivers wishing to change lanes to check mirrors and blind spots, references are given at the end of the video. There has also been test cases in law
i work for a bus company (as a mechanic) and i can say without doubt that the 2 drivers would have been talking about nothing more important than the latest price hike in the bus station cafe, or having a "he said she said" about other drivers in the company. all bus drivers are like bitchy old women.
There's a little bit of double standards here: in the video you discussed the incident with a cyclist at the junction of a roundabout. Earlier in the video you moan about two bus drivers talking, maybe they were talking about an incident, or a problem in the road.
@alstain Well, yes. I can't grumble too much about the bus drivers, I just think it's bad form to hold up the traffic especially when it is backing up on the roundabout. They have radios after all. In the discussion with the cyclist at the end, I didn't at any point hold up traffic nor would I.
@jonredhornet I can't comment specifically on those two bus drivers but I am a bus driver and there is often cause to mention any problems another drive might find ahead on his route - ie trouble passengers or badly parked vehicles impeding the route etc... not ALL buses have radios and not all conversations are quaranteed to be heard by the drivers - you say it face to face then you know they have the heard and understood the message, safety first
Conversations like that betwee bus drivers are almost invariably about road or traffic problems elsewhere on the route. It's often extremely useful to be told of a problem like a road blocked by parked cars before you get to it! PS: I should slow down when passing between rows of vehicles if I were you! Remember, most road users (inc. you probably), are amateurs!
All drivers (car/bike/bus) should always do a 'life-saver' over the shoulder check before changing lanes... thx for posting the vids; I'm glad its on the better quality camera!!
to be fair to the car driver, you were cycling down the middle of the two lanes of very slow moving traffic at some speed. They were indicating to turn into an obvious gap in the inside lane. Do you not think there is some blame on your side?
At the end of the video? Yes, completely my fault I think. It's legal to filter in stationary or slow moving traffic but I was going too quickly and as I was the person performing the overtaking manoeuvre if anything happened it would be my fault legally I think.
Still, it's worth pointing out that people should check their blind spot and also be wary of filtering traffic, I always am when driving. But in this case I don't think the guy is to blame at all, I was.
Arguably a little quick filtering but the bloke was still making the manouvre without checking properly it was clear and as he made the manouvre he failed to re-check it was still clear. Also, why the sudden need to change lanes??
(I also drive cars and trucks and ride motorbikes and pushbikes so have some understanding of both viewpoints!)
Hi. Blimey, such an aggressive comment. I'm always happy to receive criticism but ad hominem attacks are a logical fallacy which I'm sure you appreciate.
True, I did overtake on the zig zags which is contrary to the highway code, I raise my hand to that. I'm sure you also noticed the care I took in observing there were no pedestrians on the crossing or near me when I proceeded.
Point taken though (the zig zag comment, not the ad hominem)
Sweet jeebus. As a motorcyclist, I was in panic and anger mode when that guy almost hit you while you were filtering. Why was changing lanes so important to him just then anyway? Nevertheless, you must be vigilant when filtering. At the end of the day, if he'd hit you, whoever's fault i was, it'd be you with the injuries... but I needn't tell you that. :)
I'm a motorcyclists as well, just sold an SV1000 Classic and have an R1 in the shed at the mo in need of some attention :)
I think I forget sometimes how bad the brakes are on push bikes, possibly one of the reasons I felt 'safe' filtering in this video as on a motorbike I could have stopped when I first noticed him.
Yeah, how effective really. I can lock up on my cycles as well but the low weight and small contact with the road means we lock up way before we would on a motorbike.
F=μN, so the larger the N (self weight) and μ (coeff. of friction with road) the larger the frictional force before sliding / locking up starts.
I've seen bus drivers stopping traffic to have a chat too, still, at least they aren't on a mobile phone. But why, what's sooo important, I'd love to know, did you hear any of it? :-)
Jesus that could have been filtering mashed-potato for you there. Wouldnt have been a nice off as you would have slid into the car infront. One of the reasons I hate filtering and I'm pretty slow at it, lol!
Yeah, I think I was in motorbike mode and forgot I didn't have two huge front disk brakes to stop me!!! I hit the brakes hard when it happened but I hardly slowed. I need to get me some soft brake pads I think.
Lesson learnt, I'll take it easy through there from now on :)
I think if you were going slower the only advantage would have been you wouldn't have gotten there as quickly....but if you'd of left the office a few minutes sooner that advantage would have gone.
Gotta be careful through traffic like that, but there are times when it'd be nice not to have to worry and just go along at full welly!
You complain. how stupid can you be to go between two buses like that . Gobshit

great cycling
overtaking on zig zag lines at a crossing

I like you and your videos, well 'like' as in sort of endure mini-horror movies, ;-)
But this was silly - try not let one dip shits close overtake rile you into bad judgement.

Yep. +It is always a good idea to pass from the left.
Drivers usually check that way(mirror) more often (though he failed to check too, though u came too fast)
Of course unless you are from UK or Japan..
And the impatient one was you.. You can always brake like everyone does

what do you mean when you say push bikes have bad brakes?
Both the front and back bakes on my bike are easily capable of locking up.
Or do you mean there to effective?

Good video!
p.s. disc brakes won't make you stop quicker. In the dry the limiter on braking power is taking it to the point of doing an endo.
