Sherlock was a complicated man that needed a diverse and completely committed actor to portray him. No one will ever resonate this character as well as Jeremy. He will stand alone as the best ever.
It's funny if you see the Brett-Hardwicke tv-movie "The Master Blackmailer" they apparently decided to make this the "Sherlock Holmes out of the closet" episode.
The story is about a gay society man being blackmailed among others but it could also show the Holmes-Watson relation in a different way. There are several hints but at one point in the movie, Holmes even says: "Dr. Watson is my friend and partner!" The gayest Holmes episode! :-)
@AudieHollandI don´t know, the partner phrase appeared perfectly innocent to me. If there are any hints about a relationship between Holmes and Watson in this movie it completely passed me by.
If anything, it could be speculated if Holmes did have some feelings for Aggie, though I personally doubt it. elenore88´s comment though about having a gay (or in this case bisexual) actor playing Holmes being in some way wrong did strike me as pretty rude and homophobe, I really can´t see how it matters.
Suffice to say, this movie is the only one that has the gay references. Apart from the last season, I have all the DVDs and never did I find Holmes referring to Watson as "my friend and partner." So it's still the gayest episode of em all. Also because the other episodes contain not any sexuality at all.
So while all the regular tv-episodes were for all ages, I'd say the movies are PG or 12+ certificate or whatever.
And as far as elenore88, you really should talk to her, not me.
love, love, love Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke in sherlock holmes, sherlock holmes is my fav detective, i love him sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much.
Some people who I am not connected with have organised a petition that Jeremy Brett be posthumously awarded a BAFTA. For those who don't know, this is the prize given by the British Academy for Film, Television and Arts; and some people feel Brett was passed over for selection in his own lifetime.
Great interview - loved it - Yes JB was a little more subdued but it allowed much more by play between Edward and himself, Note JB's lovely response to being compared to a Victorian play manager - he positively preens - its so funny and he gives Ed such a look of shared joke.. Ed must have missed him - god know I do. One of the best intrerviews I think - thanks for posting.
@Emi101 i think this was when Brett was just released from treatment from his Bipolar illness, most likely on mood stabilizing medication and a calm daily living schedule.
I recently learned of Mr. Brett's death this week - 15 years later-and was heartbroken. I mourn the death of this great artist, the only 'Sherlock' which I can ever appreciate, but I celebrate his life and work. Dave1955
I might be going to see the new movie. What struck me as odd with seeing Jude Law in the cast was that my first impression of him when I saw him in Gattaca (this was partially because of the dark slicked back hair) was that he looked like Jeremy Brett as Holmes.
Can't understand why you will pay to see the Americanised version of Holmes - unrecognisable from the stories - when you are a fan of Jeremy Brett's interpretation - true to the stories.
I went to see on Dec 26 and I loved it - I'm willing to see whatever interpretations others have manily because I'm such a fanatic for Sherlock Holmes - Still, JB will always be number one by FAR!
Ah, man, it's always a joy to watch these two on screen. They are picture perfect Holmes and Watson, and it's a joy to watch them work. Much love from the U.S. of A.
I agree, their peronal characters really seemed to mirror those of their on-screen parts in a lot of ways. Notice how soft-spoken and silent and gentle EH is in this, very Watson.
I miss Jeremy so much. Thank you for posting These!! I wish all actors could watch this and see how PROFESSIONAL KIND< GRACIOUS MEN handle their careers and their friendships!
I think the best point made in this clip is by Brett when he suggests that the series is a good introduction to reading Sir Arthur Conon Doyle's stories.
The interviewers are annoying. The woman keeps bringing up "relationship of two men", "with two men", "two men". And then once Brett mentioned a women playing Dr. Watson: "WHAT?! A woman?! What?! How mad! A man and woman?!"
I suppose really its personal choice thats not to say Burkes not excellent but personally I am for Hardwicke. But there's one thing we all agree on Jeremy Brett is perfect as Holmes and as I source out his other roles I find that he was one hell of an actor and become more and more enchanted by him
phoaarrrr- look at judy! look at the looks they give each other( richard and judy),definate magnetism between them! seriosly though, great interview- love brett still, edward hardwicke really underated actor and great bloke

I think the author would have been horrified at having the holmes/watson thing turned into a gay fest. Or having a homosexual play his lead role.
It ruins the story when people do that.
