  • Jeremy Brett: 3rd November 1933 - 12th September 1995. Edward Hardwicke: 7th August 1932 - 16th May 2011. They will be missed!!!

  • Jeremy is a fan of red socks. This is the second interview that I've seen thats he's wearing them haha!

  • I think the author would have been horrified at having the holmes/watson thing turned into a gay fest. Or having a homosexual play his lead role.

It ruins the story when people do that.

  • Sherlock was a complicated man that needed a diverse and completely committed actor to portray him. No one will ever resonate this character as well as Jeremy. He will stand alone as the best ever.

  • Anyway, I never thought of them in that way untill I saw "The Master Blackmailer."

  • It's no secret that Brett was bisexual.

It's funny if you see the Brett-Hardwicke tv-movie "The Master Blackmailer" they apparently decided to make this the "Sherlock Holmes out of the closet" episode.

The story is about a gay society man being blackmailed among others but it could also show the Holmes-Watson relation in a different way. There are several hints but at one point in the movie, Holmes even says: "Dr. Watson is my friend and partner!" The gayest Holmes episode! :-)

  • @AudieHollandI don´t know, the partner phrase appeared perfectly innocent to me. If there are any hints about a relationship between Holmes and Watson in this movie it completely passed me by.

If anything, it could be speculated if Holmes did have some feelings for Aggie, though I personally doubt it. elenore88´s comment though about having a gay (or in this case bisexual) actor playing Holmes being in some way wrong did strike me as pretty rude and homophobe, I really can´t see how it matters.

  • @Morne02

Suffice to say, this movie is the only one that has the gay references. Apart from the last season, I have all the DVDs and never did I find Holmes referring to Watson as "my friend and partner." So it's still the gayest episode of em all. Also because the other episodes contain not any sexuality at all.

So while all the regular tv-episodes were for all ages, I'd say the movies are PG or 12+ certificate or whatever.

And as far as elenore88, you really should talk to her, not me.

  • @AudieHolland In that time period "partner" referred to a business associate.

  • Good interview.

  • Wonderful stuff!

  • love, love, love Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke in sherlock holmes, sherlock holmes is my fav detective, i love him sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much.

  • Is it me or does Mr. Hardwicke look like an older Roger De Courcey

  • @jawa808 No it's not just you lol he does.GOOD EYE!

  • Jeremy Brett is the definitive Holmes. There isn't even a close second.

  • Tell you what, puts the RDJ and Jude Law interviews to shame - there's a proper bromance.

  • Holmes & Watson: the original "bromance"?

  • @hawkeyevsgirl YES!!! YES, YES, YES! ...I mean, ahem, you're right, quite so, I think.

  • How many cups of tea have they got through??? Just look - six cups!

  • Am I the only one to find it odd to see them both not in Victorian clothing?

  • "It was handy" said Jeremy when asked about having playing Watson early in his career. I love these guys.

  • Jeremy Brett is the only actor who played SH in a believable way.

  • Great interview - loved it - Yes JB was a little more subdued but it allowed much more by play between Edward and himself, Note JB's lovely response to being compared to a Victorian play manager - he positively preens - its so funny and he gives Ed such a look of shared joke.. Ed must have missed him - god know I do. One of the best intrerviews I think - thanks for posting.

  • Brilliant actors both and charming men. RIP Jeremy.

  • Are the interviewers suggesting something?

  • Thought of the Moment:

First and last, what is required of genius is love of truth. -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)

Subject: Perhaps we just do not have the right language anymore

Anagram: paul sauna overhot - - why Hogg jeered - patent nightmares

  • @WKRPinCINN I wonder if just wanted Edward to be able to get a good many words into the interview?

  • @Emi101 i think this was when Brett was just released from treatment from his Bipolar illness, most likely on mood stabilizing medication and a calm daily living schedule.

  • Thanks. I am barely literate too, martin.

    R.I.P Jeremy Brett.

Subject: it has still got her initials on it anyway

Anagram: Thorny set again - Law's initial hostility

  • Brett IS THE BEST HOLMES EVER!

  • "and then this miracle occured"

  • I recently learned of Mr. Brett's death this week - 15 years later-and was heartbroken. I mourn the death of this great artist, the only 'Sherlock' which I can ever appreciate, but I celebrate his life and work. Dave1955

  • In our family JB is the only Sherlock Holmes and yes he does make this fictional character seem real.

  • I live in Liverpool! If I was born about seven years earlier I would have been within a mile radius of them when they were filming!

  • Many thanks!

  • "No definition of Holmes"? Jeremy Brett is MY definition of Holmes.

I'm curious to see what comes of the new film and as I'm a Sherlock Holmes addict I will go to see it.

  • Best Holmes and Watson ever.

  • @teamdoa Couldn't agree more....:)

  • I might be going to see the new movie. What struck me as odd with seeing Jude Law in the cast was that my first impression of him when I saw him in Gattaca (this was partially because of the dark slicked back hair) was that he looked like Jeremy Brett as Holmes.

  • What a lovely interview!

  • there was nothing like seeing him in the empty house

  • Downey Jr. has no chance!

  • no one will ever really have a chance after Jeremy, but I'm still dying to go see it in December!

  • Can't understand why you will pay to see the Americanised version of Holmes - unrecognisable from the stories - when you are a fan of Jeremy Brett's interpretation - true to the stories.

  • I went to see on Dec 26 and I loved it - I'm willing to see whatever interpretations others have manily because I'm such a fanatic for Sherlock Holmes - Still, JB will always be number one by FAR!

  • I agree!

  • Brett was a perfect Holmes

  • He was. It's a terrible shame he's gone.

  • i totally agree. RIP

  • I agree too. None can top his performance as Homes.

  • they'll be watching it thirty years from now" and they nearly are.

  • Very true.

  • they look so odd in twentieth century clothes ;)

  • lol

    that is quite true

    I LOVE JEREMY'S VOICE!!!!

  • actually watson is supposed to be 3 years younger than holmes

  • 3 years younger than Holmes? I think in the books he was 2 years older than Holmes :)

  • I believe it was 2 years older.

  • Ah, man, it's always a joy to watch these two on screen. They are picture perfect Holmes and Watson, and it's a joy to watch them work. Much love from the U.S. of A.

  • I agree, their peronal characters really seemed to mirror those of their on-screen parts in a lot of ways. Notice how soft-spoken and silent and gentle EH is in this, very Watson.

  • I miss Jeremy so much. Thank you for posting These!! I wish all actors could watch this and see how PROFESSIONAL KIND< GRACIOUS MEN handle their careers and their friendships!

  • I think the best point made in this clip is by Brett when he suggests that the series is a good introduction to reading Sir Arthur Conon Doyle's stories.

  • I agree, and I also love when he said "we all have to relate off somebody", that's so very true.

  • True, though I still won't see an episode before I have read the actual story as not to spoil the reading experience :)

  • I loved it when Jeremy called Edward a miracle

  • The interviewers are annoying. The woman keeps bringing up "relationship of two men", "with two men", "two men". And then once Brett mentioned a women playing Dr. Watson: "WHAT?! A woman?! What?! How mad! A man and woman?!"

  • Comment removed

  • I suppose really its personal choice thats not to say Burkes not excellent but personally I am for Hardwicke. But there's one thing we all agree on Jeremy Brett is perfect as Holmes and as I source out his other roles I find that he was one hell of an actor and become more and more enchanted by him

  • Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke are Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. They are and will always be a hard act follow.

  • Hey! What is your opinion about the ne Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson? (Downey Jr- Jude Law)

  • It sucks.

  • haha does he wear those red socks to every interview?

  • lol, I'm always watching for the red socks too :)

  • The best Holmes and Watson ever. Every performance is an absolute treasure.

  • I an Happy Thanks for the video!

    I love Jeremy

  • Oh, Jeremy. He looks gorgeous here, so flamboyant! Got to love the trainers.

  • phoaarrrr- look at judy! look at the looks they give each other( richard and judy),definate magnetism between them! seriosly though, great interview- love brett still, edward hardwicke really underated actor and great bloke

  • Gotta love those scarves of his! :-)

  • brett is much subdued in this video, did you notice?

  • I didn't but you're right

  • @PLbrettfan Perhaps delicate could be a word to describe it. I don't think he was overcome or subdued (Fr. under ).

  • True, but Hardwicke is usually quiet during interviews anyway and lets Jeremy do all the talking, he's much livelier :)

The interviewers were constantly intervening because they wanted them to feel that they were being fair to both.

  • I haven't watched this video in 2 years, and your comment just had me watch it again. I'd forgotten all about it. thanks for the indirect inspiration marelicainavokado.

  • Anytime @WKRPinCINN :) Feel the power of Brett!

  • Yes, they are a legend now. Thanks for the video!

  • sorry, but I have to mention Ronald Howard again as Sherlock: he was as tremendous as Brett...

  • Indeed. I do like Jeremy better. but rondald howard is second on my list!!!

  • thanks for agreeing. brett is also my fave, and only for holmes-series, but also for his all-acting talent. he had the voice, the looks and the grace... I can't believe he is not with us.

  • He still is.. In our hearts.. :p

  • could listen to that voice all day it's just darling....... they both come across as very respectful towards each other.

  • Has anyone noticed, Brett's facial movements are very similar to those he puts on as Holmes, even when he talks regularly?

  • @Richiepookinshoo That's because he IS Sherlock Holmes... or was... *sigh*

  • @AllHailAkemi *gently hugs*

  • @Richiepookinshoo, Jeremy was bipolar, sometimes he acted as Holmes in the real life.

That is the major reason why that performance was so great. He couldn't leave the character. Now, the character can't leave him :)

  • @Richiepookinshoo Very true, he really became Holmes. <3

  • Jeremy Brett was the best sherlock Holmes ever, no one will ever top him or that series!

  • I like Jeremy's scarf, it's so cool.

  • The red socks again! Love it - thanks so much.

  • Thank you for putting this up, i always remember staying up late as a child to watch it in my Grandma's room before she came home from bingo and caught me. i was so upset when jeramy died. i never got to see how he was outside of the holmes character. its nice to see he was a really lovely man.

  • I agree 1000%

  • also my big thanks for this interview..i never had the uppertunety too watch him this way..he was the best sherlock homes acteur in my eyes ..and still i love it too see him as that ....okee byyyy and thanks donri

  • Television GOLD

    Keep this on

  • Who would have thought that the interviews I recorded from the TV all those years ago would have ended up on You Tube!! I notice the TV AM interviews I also recorded back in the 1980's have made an appearance.

  • Thanks for posting this-a pleasure to watch:)
