One of the sweetest, purest most bell like voices ever and one of the best renditions of this aria - transcends the listener into a heavenly musical place.
Check out the Norwegian soprano Sissel. She has an amazing voice and she is extremely talented. Her voice is crystalclear. And singers like Placido Domingo, Bryn Terfel and Jose Carreras loves her. Check out the videos of Sissel here on YouTube.
I think her voice sounds rich and full on this. Especially her A when she initiates the high tessitura section. Her Bb and C were beautiful and everything is phrased wonderfully.

Ms Te Kanawa has been one of the most remarkable sopranos of her time but Puccini has never been her best author: she didn't possess the clarity of Italian diction to render the most difficult conversational singing so typical of that author and she was ill at ease with some deceivingly simple turn of musical phrases.
This arioso (it's not really an aria, not in the formal sense) is managed through her professionalism only, but even if all high notes are hit and breaths
This is not a matter of personal opinion, but rather one of vocal technique, the nature and quality of native vocal gifts which are dependent upon the physiognomy of the singer, resonating chambers in the head and chest which affect the physics of human sound production, vocal timbre, size of the column of the voice, liquidity, range and power. Not really matters of "favorites" or "opinion", but rather matters of fact. However, about taste there is no dispute, it has been rightly said. Regards.
When Kiri Te Kanawa sings, it has nothing to do with physics nor facial features ie.physiognomy (and we all need to challenge the distorted discourse used on YouTube) It has everything to do with the ability to sing Opera and sing it well. Kiri Te Kanawa is one of the most gifted sopranos in the last 40 years. Thank you.
If it isn't your singer then why the hell spend so much time with your pretzel bullshit. And what is it with the 2 identities trinte33//Trinite33? Why?
Why not not duplicate. Why not try to not denigrate a singer because you simply do not understand that singer. Instead you pull the singer down with one comment-trinte33, then wait another month(and not being too original-Trinite33, hell I'll have another crack at Kiri because she has a better frock than mine. I'm close aren't I?

Actually, the physics of the human body, before technique, has everything to do with singing. A singer's sound depends upon his or her physical equipment. That said, Kiri is a lovely singer, no doubt. I don't hate her. I simply measure all professional singers against the very highest standards. I have heard Kiri many times and am always pleased with her singing. But she simply is not a singer of the very first rank. However, Kudos to her for a fine career. Regards.
An avid performance that is a little light of voice and short of breath; a weak middle voice with some passing insecurity in the top, although she is enjoyable to listen to. Lovely, but not ravishing, not transporting. One is not swept into another place. One is delighted but left precisely where one is. The truly great singer leaves the listener with an entirely new impression of the world he or she inhabits. It is the gift of the truly great singer to take the listern to another place.
@trinte33 I've enjoyed reading your observations- You should record them and listen to them frequently - best to do it when your on the terlet - remember to keep the recorder above the flush
divine. her recording of this, on some opera classics collection cd, brought me in from the other room when i heard it playing, and i have been a fan ever since. ive never loved a classical artist more
This video is especially uploaded for our good Kiri-Friend, "The Celticinme", who shares a tribute with the same aria by Dame Kiri. And of course also for all Kiri-Lovers in the world. Enjoy!

I love the way she sings this. And she was particularly bright and beautiful with this performance!

forgive Kiri for her dress. remember, it was the 80's when shoulder pads prevailed once again.

Yes, that dress is the uglyest in the world. An excellent interpretation, thanks Kiri.

Wonderful. I love the way the conductor supports her, but who designed that dress?
The shoulders are so Joan Crawford!
Beautiful singing!

long her voice sounds shrill and strained -compared to how rich and full it is when singing other authors.

She's the best, I agree. There is a recording of this complete opera---La Rondine by Puccini, with her and Placido Domingo.
