this is really cool and quite advanced with the compositing. I'm trying to figure out how to boolean away vertices, but boolean seems to only operate on lines and faces, not vertices. Not really interested in renders, just object manipulation. Thanks for the cool tut - I enjoyed watching.
I had some difficulties. Perhaps related to the warning at 05:42.
I attempted to follow your instructions.
I had some long text in a fibrous shape rather than globular monkey.
I got glow in undesired invisible areas.
I order to clean up the image 1. create a mask id node for the non plane objects (second id)..2. Blur that image to increase size 3. Multiply again the glowing areas to remove the partial defect. 4. continue to test
I did and got a bit too much glow at the ear of the monkey :)
@NionsChannel Nice Tut, maybe some more selfconfidence in your speaking (a bit faster maybe) would be better. And btw it would be ok because it's a good pro-tutorial.
@mikh3x4 sure, that's possible, too. But the boolean modifier often behaves bugy. Or has this changed in newer Blender versions? I haven't tried it in a long time...
Anyway: With this technique, complex meshes don't slow down the animation process as much as with boolean modifiers and you can have as much clipping objects as you want.
Amazing tutorial! Thank you very much, Nion! Before this I didn't got Multiply meaning properly. And of course this masks and Zmask explanation is really what I had need to know.
As german as can be, but only because you ask :) And, as mentioned before, screw it. This is harder to lose than learning the techniques you generously present to us, and doing sometihng like that in a foreign language deserves due respect, as doing this for others in general. Awesome videos, subscriiiibe!
@dodgydavec I thought I was the only one. Have you seen Sebastian's tut on Blender compositing over at cmiVFX? Over five hours and he also uses masks extensively and explains them well. But for me it is most challenging to understand when to Mix with multiply or add or alpha over plus the masking.
@onjoFilms I just love compositing. It is like doing math witch colors. Maybe it is easier for me, because I always keep in mind the numbers behind the colors.

Great tutorial. I'm an experienced user and I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around these layer masking techniques.

You still have your german accent.
One matter of practicality. Tricky techniques don't need handholding. We can setup on our own. Make your life easier and skim the basic stuff.
