I can't believe I *just* found this song allegedly written for Kurt Cobain, it has a forefront message with underlying tones of hope giving it a soothing feel. If anybody else has an interpretation of this song, I'd love to read it!
Deketunes - I understand your point, but it could also be argued that Jeep and Al would have never amounted to anything musically if it hadn't been for Sean's songwriting. yes, they are talented human beings in their own right, but really, without Sean they are just like you and I jamming in our basements... and there is nothing wrong with that.
Makes me shudder to think that this song was written for Kurt. Such a beautiful song for such a tortured soul. I hope some of Sean's beauty helped ease Kurt's transition to the next world.
i think it's realtively short-sighted to say that Sean IS the Samples. without Jeep and Al's reggae influences and Andy's stellar bass lines, the Samples would never have made it out of Boulder. Sean is an excellent songwriter...yes. but those early songs would never have become the classics they have without Jeep, Al, and Andy. i wish they'd put their differences aside and get together again. nothing can compare to those early albums.
This is the most inspiring Samples song written. I think the bass line and drums push it along quite nicely. And when Sean comes back in with '... was life too heavy?' it sends shivers down my spine. Thanks for penning the song that keeps my chin up,
I don't need to miss them too much because Dan, Jared, Billy and Karl (the best keyboardist in the universe) are so much more sympatico. And of course, Sean IS the Samples...
Still one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard...and one of the most heatbreaking.

The Samples first album was by far my favorite but all of their music makes me happy. :)

With my hands I will build you
castles in the sand and the promise of a land (man?)
that it will keep you from the weight of the world
They all ran away on our horses
leaving nothing to be found
they dug our dreams up from the ground
and took our forces from the weight of the world
Can I please have one more dance with you
Goodbye all I've loved and held, and you

Was life too heavy? Will you be free?
You may never get older
It no longer hangs over
So let go of the weight of the world
The weight of the world
It's so far away
from the weight of the world
so far away
The weight of the world
