@NicoleHalsey13 THANK YOU. people act like they have to choose between gwen and mirah, as if only one of them can have redeemable qualities. Why can't they both be remarkable young women?
@NicoleHalsey13 The thing is, Gwen is exactly right when she says "people would say I got exactly what I deserved", even 100 years later, people are still saying it!
i love how she responded to mr. lush that is exactly how i would have done it, with monstrous sadistic bastard like grandcourt, acting like his actions don't bother you would be the best way to deal with him, cause he takes pleasure in other's pain and despair and i would not give him that pleaurse.
@Mandinko23 i agree. and also i think the fact that the fortune goes to the little boy lessens gwen's guilt about stealing it away from his mother. it all worked out (for the boy) in the end.
@NicoleHalsey13 (Sorry it took so long to reply) But yes I know that reference and I agree without the drama of gwen's relationship it would be difficult to keep the story interesting. I enjoyed watching how everything came together and how Gwen grew to realize the mistakes she made.
@NicoleHalsey13 Yeah, she becomes a better person, but I dont know if the other characters are boring exactly I enjoyed pretty much every character in its own way in this show. But she is definatley the character that grows the most during the show.
@NicoleHalsey13 Thank you thats exactly what I've been thinking. I'm glad I am not the only person who thinks all that about her. No one deserves to be treated the was she was no matter what the reasons are behind the marraige.
I know Mirah is the better person, but I can't help but find her character a little bland - Gwendolen is deeply flawed, but far more interesting, as you watch her change for the better throughout the story. She's a real human being: we are all selfish at times; it is in human nature to bite off more than we can chew, and many will perhaps regret the consequences of their ill thought out actions as she has.
@fabziepie Mirah's character bland ? I can't agree to that bcos in-spite of all she had lost she still finds joy in what she does which is singing. People react in different ways when faced with some kind of adversity in life. The most important thing is that if you can overcome such difficulties & relate or converse freely with others.
Gwen is annoying and I don't like how she is the main character even though the film and book are titled Daniel Deronda. She is an annoying character.
@AhlaWahde I use to have d same reaction u r having about Jews and having their own country. But until u read their history u will not understand. Trust me belonging to some ethnicity is 1 thing but establishing yourself in a land u can call ur own is another. Reason is bcos no 1 will have the right to hold u captive or throw u out of their country when they feel like it.
@eldadevata Thnx 4 the elaborate explanation on culture & death. Maybe I'm deluding myself but there r certain things that never die until humans no longer exist. One of it is culture. It's impossible to flee from it bcos it's part of us and seen in the various ways we live, dress, talk, act and even the infrastructure & sculptures that exist today came from the great minds that were influenced by culture.
Lush is so slimy! He's jealous of Gwendolen and watches her closely, hoping to see her fall apart when he tells her that Grandcourt's estate will go to his illegitimate son, but she remains composed. She's not going to give either of them the satisfaction of seeing her emotions.
I would kill myself if I were Gwen

Gwendolen learned to bear his sufferings quite cheerfully... even the hideous Mr. Lush could unsettle her with that will.

All talk about the Jews is quite boring. I'm not against them in any way but why do they have more right to an own country than any other people?
I just want Deronda and Gwendolyn to get together & kill Mr.Grandcourt! :-)

@AhlaWahde You obviously do not understand their history. It is a complicated thing that most who are not of Jewish decent can not understand.

@chicomustreign You are deluding yourself.
A country can be conquered, its people exiled, or enslaved and so on.
Cultures come and go, they unavoidably change with time and thus die.
The illusion that cultures live on is just a pathetic way to flee the knowledge that we all die.
It is almost certain that in the not too far future from geological time perspective, our species will die out like all the 99.99% that ever lived.
Cultures have far shorter lifespan compared to a species.

@cupabara Yes, I think you're right, she is fundamentally a good
person,who feels for Grandcourt's "other family".
She became very emotional when encountering his mistress and
children.

@mannixisle
a good person. Only foolish, and very spoilt, at least before grandcourt ruined her.
