  • I didn't say anything about modifying the consonants, just making them more audible.

    I'm comparing MH here with Christa Ludwig, etc.

    we sang Mahler under Kent Nagano and he could never get too much consonants.

  • OK fine vocals. But who's playing the violin?? What's the orchestra?? It should be stated in your description!

  • @Cedericoco It's not stated in my description because I haven't got the foggiest idea who they are.

  • @Cedericoco This recording may possibly be from "Marilyn Horne: the Complete Decca Recitals"; if so, it's the Vienna Cantata Orchestra under Henry Lewis. Violinist not credited--could be their concertmaster. Available from Amazon and other sources as CD or MP3.

  • not bad but our (German) conductor would say: where are the consonants?! she's singing on the tip of her teeth.

    I just noticed something, her voice loses her focus on the downward part of up-and-down runs, there's like a hole in the voice, and then she makes the low notes really strong to make us forget...

  • @wattever333 please tell your German conductor that to me as a German it seems pure heaven to hear finally a singer who is not ruining and torturing German language with this ridiculous overuse of (especially explosive) consonants. Unfortunately there is a big number of German conductors, chorus masters etc. which never have heard or felt anything about legato in singing.. So they would probably ask for: Erpp (!)arme Tt(!)ichm mein Kk(!)ottt(!).... Awful !!!

  • Re Koster the great singing teacher said that Marilyn was her favourite singer- one can understand why when listening to this.

  • Fantastica intepretazione "terrena" del noto brano...la Horne è un gigante, ma soprattutto nell'opera. La Ferrier resta inarrivabile nella Matthaeus Passion

    The poor violinist (who performs admirably too) gets no mention and no credits, nor does the orchestra and conductor. I think they deserve recognition too, don't you think?

    I know. I find that infuriating on YouTube - also, there's rarely a date of the perfromance given. Frustrating.

  • My God. What is it with Marilyn Horne that makes her so extremely unique? Her voice really sets her apart from any other mezzo. But I find it hard to pinpoint exactely what it is. She has a dark voice but is never husky and full of air like many other contraltos and mezzos with dark voices. Her voice always remains dark with a shiny edge to it. Beautifull.

    for me, it's her coloratura. I don't know of any other singer who sings coloratura the same way that she does.

  • Oh, I like this so much.

    It's touching and her voice is sooo agreeable, nothing shrill in it as it is sometimes with classical singers (in my opinion).

  • She is fantastic. Her pronounciation is not so bad and her approach is perfect. Why are some people doing a contest as if singing to Our Lord were just a horse race with Prize " et al " ? I prefer other versions ( Ludwig or Grace Hoffman's for instance but this is great too. In life repentment can be expressed in different ways : Horne's is a bit more extrovert but it is valid.

  • cet enregistrement est intéressant et montre bien qu'une grande voix n'est pas forcément sublime partout : si Horne reste incomparable dans les grands rôles travestis de Rossini notamment, elle est médiocre dans Bach : mauvaise prononciation, peu d'émotion ressentie. Christa Ludwig reste incomparable (version Klemperer)

  • I like Eula Beal's version better, but Horne's dramatic capabilities and vocal majesty blow me away.

  • one of the most haunting and opulent versions of this aria I have ever heard. I'm a serious authentick music buff but.......how could this possibly be bettered? MY GOD.
