Next innovation for model railroads? Traffic Signals that work with the railroad signals and go on limited sequence when a train comes. For example, the red light for the main road crossing the track stays red as long as the RR crossing is flashing.
Cool intersection and almost perfect timing of the red light before the train got there!:)
Pretty cool but in real life, the traffic signals would change to all red for a brief period then the crossing signals would activate. We have a few like that were I work, and if you do anything less than 10 mph to the crossing, you basically have to stop the train right at the edge of it until the gates come down. Its sucks the way some are set up.
To save casslakeschris the trouble of answering this frequent, but understandable, question... the reason his signals don't do any pre-emptions (either flashing red or track green clearance) is because the controller for the signals isn't designed for that. I don't know if you can buy any that are. These controllers have preset, pretimed sequences for the traffic signals. It would probably be not impossible to build something prototypical, but would likely need to be controlled by a PC program.
you can probly make something hooked up to some sort of photosensor(like a laser beam or something) so that when something breaks the beam it sets off the lights or signals or etc....get it?
Detecting the train isn't the problem... it's getting the traffic lights to sequence through a pre-emption sequence when the train activates it that is the problem. You can easily buy train detectors that can be hooked up to do that, but it would require actually building a controller for the traffic signal sequencing for this, because none exist out there for that currently.
Most likely yes, if I remember correctly it's a computer control box that picks up the sensors on the rails that forces the traffic lights red on real crossings. Theoretically a computer program could be made to control the same sequence. It would most likely be very simple programming that would likely pick up the polarity of the direction the lead engine is travelling. I have a friend who understands how to do this. worth checking into. Would really make a layout more prototypical.
In most places across the country though... and in the MUTCD, the traffic lights aren't supposed to go into all-red or flashing red sequence for railroad crossing pre-emption. They are supposed to go into a sequence to give traffic on the crossing a green light to get them off the track before he train arrives. That makes this REALLY complicated, because a custom controller (and probably some more computer programming) has to be custom designed specifcally for this.
Where's the signal pre-emption and the track clearance phases? Any signal that close to the track must use special sequences to insure that no cars waiting for the signal are on the track, and no cars heading for the track get a green light.
If you look at his most recent level crossing vids you'll see that the traffic lights are in sequence with the signals. But seriously, why are you critiquing when you couldn't do any better?
This video is pretty accurate to these intersections in my area where the green is a little bit while the rail road signal is before or after cycle. It just did not make sense in the real world to have all lights red.
@Mudimush The light can be green for the cross street, because traffic approaching the crossing can still turn left or right onto the street parallel to the tracks. Of course, if that's the case, and there is no protected left turn sequence, it would make more sense to have the signal flash yellow for the parallel street and flash red for the cross street (or if the cross street has enough traffic demand, an all red flash).
man where can i buy the crossing lights and the traffic lights? Also, I have a Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer JCPenny Edition would the lights work with that?
They are Walthers Traffic lights, problem is is if when a train comes and you want it to flash youre going to need your on circut because the one that comes with the lights dont allow this.
Those traffic signals are great. For once they look proper scale-size. Could be adaptable for use in UK and European layouts, with British / Euro phasing. Could someone ask Walthers to bring out 2-aspect red/green heads for pedestrian signals?
I love your video! If only the traffic lights could blink when a train passes by, but great video! You did a way beyond awsome job! Can't wait to see more.

Just a thought, Is there anyway to get the stop lights to flash RED when the cross buck goes off?

If you got all the stop lights to flash red while a train went over the crossing, that'd be bad ass..... I see that all the time.
jjmalcak 1 year ago
@jjmalcak a few logic gates and a 555 pulse timer and that would be a piece of cake, I agree, they should all be red when train is crossing.

The system is only for slight realism and is most likely not set up to do such a function.
The sequencer only knows to go through the red, yellow and green lights.

All signals on red when, or just prior to, activation of the level crossing occurs would be ideal.
