@Pabloko09 Actually, I recall it looking pretty bad with subsurf which is why I stuck to the low-poly. Higher res would have required more detail that I definitely wasn't good at at the time. It's funny looking back at stuff like this (this was before I started school for Game Design) and thinking how proud I was of it and how bad it looks to me now. Though I still think my overall topology was good I know many ways to optimize and push the detail with the same poly count now.
@masterxeon1001 This is an old old model that was just a practice expirement, one done well before I started school for video game design. I'm working on gathering all my work and working on new stuff to develop my online portfolio which will be posted on a new channel (DeviantGerman) when I get it ready, as well as videos of small game projects I'm doing.
@dEDruNkGaMeR I'm seriously attempting to get around to it. Being a full time student in a Bachelor's program makes it difficult. All the same my skills are far beyond this now and improve with every term, so it always feels like I might present something that isn't to the best of my upcoming abilities. I promise though that I am writing out a tutorial that will take a character from concept, to modeling and sculpting, to a finished game/production ready model. It will be coming though.
Wow, great low poly character, especially for ur first. i remember when i first started blender about six months ago, maybe more, and i watched this video and i thought ur character was perfect. The style, the topology is just great. i finally recently found a tutorial on cgtuts if any one is wondering, it helped me alot on the low poly character stuff. Outstanding job man
@Hexx333 The tutorial was by Jonathan Williamson of Montage Studio fame. If you go to their website you can find the tutorial I used and many more in their tutorials section.
What do you mean? If you're talking about primitive, I did poly by poly on this one, not box modelling or anything like that. I use either or depending on the complexity of the mesh.
Bit of time and a lot of practice over the years with the software. Too many people have asked that question to so many others expecting that within a day they can create something. I'm still learning, and most in the industry have been learning since start and will be learning till death.
I never got around to it at the time, and this was so long ago I don't have the original anymore to finish. If I ever have the free time again between school and work I might do a new one. Probably the majority of my postings down the road will be projects from my 3d classes once all my pre-requisites are out of the way.
not all the time. Yes Maya is professional but so as blender. They both can do the samething and bring your characters with your powerful creativeness into 3d and graphics. I use blender and I would like to use maya in the future for my career for animation and use blender for modeling. Just personal preferences.
A lot of people have trouble with the interface at first, it's just a matter of learning it. You may wanna check it out again once Blender 2.5 comes out, I think you'll find things much more comfortable. The included smoke physics and volumetrics (possibly including volumetric sculpting) are much added bonuses.
13 isn't a bad age to really start. I started with building and maintaining networks and building webpages around 11. Now in regards to those 2 things there isn't anything I can't do or figure out. The sooner you start the further ahead you'll be when you get to be my age (24).
Guess I should take that as a complement, if someone can relate something I did to a commercial game. I can't take all the credit as the real meat of it is from a tutorial, but nowadays with my practice I can do it from my own works. Just gotta finish one one of these days, heh.
Maybe in the future if you start a development team you'll hire me, haha. I'm in my first term of school right now with westwood for a bachelor's in video game art and design, any experience i can pick up along the way will be very beneficial.
I used a background image as a reference, yes. When modelling, one should always have a reference, just winging it usually ends up horribly disproportionate, unless sculpting. I've seen some people do some amazing 3d sculpts by just the seat of their pants.
It probably took him 5 hours to make this, for an easy tutorial biew mine! It takes 15 minutes to create a character my way! And it is a good character! Peice...
2 hours the first time, and now it takes me just about 20 minutes to get this far. From what I've seen from your tutorial, you need a lot more work. Everyone's progress is forward, so keep it up, and maybe you'll hit your dream one day. I'm currently enrolled in school for game and character design, so maybe you'll be playing my games before I am playing yours.
you modeled the ass beautifully. Did you put any subsurf on that? i made my first low poly about 3 hours ago and im wondering how to make it look smoother while keeping the low poly count.
No subsurf on what you see here. Just tweaking verts to get edges to be as smooth flowing as possible. That's the important thing to remember for me. The verts control the edges which ultimately control the faces. Start with the most basic and minor tweaks to get the larger detail you want.
it's called the Joan of arc tutorial sheesh you people ever heard of google no offense to you but it gets annoying to see all these comments about how do I do this and if you don't like the Joan of arc tutorial check out ken brilliants book digital human creation I think thats the title it'll help you create something awesome !!! also this model is from a tutorial itself look it up on the blender forums I'm sure you'll find it !!!
This is the result of a tutorial itself. It's from the character modelling tutorial over on Montage Studio's site, which is responsible for the excellent Adrianna tutorials and DVD as well. Worth a good look.
mmm imagine that with a nice subsurf
