Semper Fi! I was in the Marine Corps. I was lucky enough to be a part of my unit that got to go on a special trip to Iwo Jima in 1998, and I got to see the monument located at the exact spot where the flag was raised. What an experience it was.

two flags were raised, one being too small to be seen by troops so they sent another one up to boost morale and to be seen by everyone...OORAH!

The main reason was that James Forrestal wanted the first flag as a souvenir, but The Marines didn't like that idea. Neither did Colonel Chandler Johnson, so he got one of his assistant operations officers to get another flag and get it up to the Marines on top of suribachi, and to secure the first flag ASAP.

I know someone who fought on Iwo Jima, and he said he doesnt think he deserves any recognition. But he definatly was proud standing on the beaches when he saw that first flag go up.
