Portuguese doesn't sound anything like Spanish. It sounds kind of like Romanian.

Take it from someone whose native tongue is Spanish; the two languages are almost identical. French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese all have the same root.

@dragonfate1 Right, I know both in vocabulary and grammar it's practically the same as Spanish, I was just saying purely in terms of sound, to a native English speaker, it seems on the surface to be totally different from Spanish. I have also heard people describe Portuguese as sounding Slavic. But of course even I can pick out the Latin vocabulary, which makes it sound like Romanian to me.

@RWT683 How the hell does this sound slavic? It all depends on what your native tongue to "understand" part of it. I'm born here in the U.S.A. to both Brazilian and Mexican parents. My first language was spanish. I also speak english. i'm trying to master Brazilian portuguese. i can say i understand more tha half of what she is saying. Spanish and Portuguese are over 85% similar in grammar. Vocabulary is very similar.
