  • what type of camera are you using and where did you get it

  • @JohnButlerFan123 He went to Full Sail University.

  • I now you've covered it before but do you use multi cam or get the actors to stay still as you move the camera to the next angle You said you do the whole thing multiple times from different angle in the other episode but do you do that for action scenes and how do you get the both angle exactly the same.

  • @UCOUSAMedia i actually believe that when they are doing the interviews they are recording on laptops (macbooks probably). if you look in the corners of the shot, you can see them. that way they just record the whole thing and then they switch the angles in post. :)

  • wow that bridget girl is cute! :D

    -jack

  • @boomactin

perhaps they are using two cameras.

and used only one audio, making it continuously from either one of the recording devices. with the same settings of course. might help. :D

  • @boomactin i think they use a shotgun mic

  • @boomactin @ThePress2012 @boomactin They use a microphone not connected to the camera, I don't think they would use a shotgun mic for it so perhaps a box microphone(I have no idea what they are called )

  • @boomactin they are using lavalier mic, look at their shirt collars.

  • Shum what are you saying?

  • EH FUCKIN U R TELLLIN US SHIT NA U GUESS UR LOL

  • Thank you so much for the directing and acting discussion. I'm a film student and have been looking for directing tips and techniques. Hearing you guys talk about your process has been a huge help. Thanks!

  • Would this would be considered Tim's second big movie after Armistice?

  • 50 shows of play or 50 different plays. because in india the play is big part , an actor have easily 100 shows under his belt even if he is new

  • Dear Ryan, what camera do you use for your show and videos? How much did it cost? I'm looking into the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS... It is about 400 dollars. Do you think this is a good camera? Please Answer!!

  • @ASommerFilms he uses a canon 5d mark ii and more recently a canon t2i, both of them are hdslr cameras. I wouldn´t recomed you to buy the powershot because there is stuff you can´t use manualy and the camera does automatically, the optic is not the good and the sensor is quite lame. If you save 300 extra dollars you could afford a canon t2i or maybe a t3i that would totally worth each penny wasted, those are hdslrs as i mentioned before, they give you a "film look" by a very reasonable price.

  • hey check my videos out

  • what the heck, Ryan seems like a normal person in this episode.

  • Nice way to fit starbucks on your mug ry

  • He learned Meisners method. As I'm learning as a director should do the extra homework such as script analysis, character development, and listening to the actors.

  • Thumbs up if you thought Todd Bruno was swearing at first when they censored him talking about the movie. :)

  • Awesome keep going!!

  • It's uncanny how Todd and Ryan both look similar to each other.

  • Just a thought, you guys should enter a film that you've made into the Sundance festival next year, I think you'll so really well :)

  • Ryan: What type of relationship do you like to have with your director while filming?

Announce: Hold That Back Throught, Be Right Back.

    Me: MOTHER FFF!!!!... xDDD

  • Hello there, I love your videos, each one makes me laugh and gives me great tips. I would lik you to show how to make a light coming from a electronic devise. Such as a small devise like an ipod, and a larger one like a TV. The actual light coming from the electronic isnt bright enough and i dont know how to re-create it. Please help.

  • the girl in the red is pretty hot

  • @ElectricBluePenguin7 haha me too! have you made any short films?

  • @ElzTanko Yes I have I made one called Shot Down it was pretty bad but I've learned TONS more since then and Shot Down 2 will be tons better.

  • Hey Ryan Ive been watching your show since the beginning...and ive always wanted to know the process and the steps it takes to produce the show FilmRiot...i was hoping that you can make an episode showing this

  • Are you going to put up TELL on youtube?

  • Are you going to put up TELL on youtube?

  • 1:37 hottttt

  • Ryan reminds me of House for some reason

  • @BadAssEffects and you should remove the "ass" from your channel name........ "BadEffects" is more suitable. try harder next time before ripping on a pro! Ryan is the boss!

  • Wow, this is a really informational video. Thanks a bunch! Keep up the epicosity!! :)

  • Hey, another great episode.I do have a question though.About the film that you're currently working on, 'TELL'.I'd like to know, if you're going to post it online after it's finished, or are you only going to sell it via DVD and give a trailer or 2 of it online?

  • I so agree with Todd's POV about actors doing written bios and histories and profiles, etc for their characters. They're popular at acting schools but I've never experienced them adding much to a character's honest performance. It's pretty much pointless intellectualizing of a process that, by definition, can only be expressed in the moment. But, hey, if it makes you feel like a 'real actor'... go right ahead :)

  • Hey Ryan, ever consider doing a podcast?

  • @TisJacob Film Riot is a video podcast. You can subscribe on itunes right now.

  • @FilmState ahh okay. thanks! :)

  • Nice!

  • Can I ask what the parallel bars on the bottom of your camera are?

  • @kylerose1990 They are support rods for the lens adapter.

  • @FilmState Ah, I see. Thanks for the reply! I shoot with a DSLR, so... :)

  • Film RIot is a place od aid for film makers. It would look awfully non-credible, if they didn't show processes of film making. So good on ya Ryan for showing this, no matter who says it is a bad episode.

  • @PhillyGirl1 Thank you! :)

  • at 1:32 what happened to the guys ear?! its like someone ripped out an earring. But still great episode and better yet, great show thnx for the help

  • lol siemens...

  • ogiugi96, this was the best episode of film riot.

  • how long is "TELL" expected to be like 30mintues or something?

    --just wondering

  • lmfaooo The gay jokes are always awkwardly funny. lmfaoo

  • Hello Ryan,

I searched for a comment answering what is the soundtrack you use starting with 1:39 but to no avail. Could you answer that? Thanks. Keep up!

  • Is it just me or is the audio out of sync?

  • Hey Ryan, I was just wondering whatever happened with the short film you did altogether with Dan Brown!

  • What program did Stark use to create the intro?

  • Great Episode. It's really good info. I like hearing both sides of the camera. Thanks.

  • "And I'm like, Dangit, that's a lot of lazy t-rex arm fellas with low IQ's"

Lmao, and that's just the commercial part. I just recently started watching Film Riot, and I find it so helpful! Keep up the good work!!

  • my only regret is not finding Film Riot sooner. You guys Rock!!!

  • why havnt i heard of any of these actors? of yea their work dosnt get attention because it sucks...

  • your steady cam kit is fricken awesome.

...I think I might walk on set in police bodyarmour for my next film...and make my SLR look like a gun out of district 9....that would impress my crew...

  • Spoiler Alert: Someone dies

  • Lol t-rex arms

  • How do you talk to your actors during a shot without having your voice be recorded?

  • TIIIIIIIIIIIM!!!!!!!!!!!! O_O

  • Lol, was I correct in seeing Ryan on Facebook during the interview??

  • Not until last August did I know I wanted to be a director. I loved how amazing I felt whenever I filmed and edited, how happy it made me. I'll be in the worst mood, come home, watch these videos and suddenly everything's all right and I'm incredibly inspired. Thank you for everything you do! You remind me why I love filming. I know I'm a girl and it's crazy to want to be a director, but I want to do this with my life more than anything. You've taught me so much already.

  • where did you go to film school?

  • very good :)

  • Is tell a short film or feature?

  • ummmmmmmm. Love the riot. Not your best here though. This was a more laid back 1.0 Film Riot. Can we get back to the 2.0 that we all love??

  • too random

  • This was really insightful! Thanks!

  • I thought there were going to be only friends and family in the film??? This Todd Bruno's is a pro.

  • @sup3000639 If you go back and listen again to when I announced that, you will here that I said the CREW is family and friends. I did a casting call for the actors.

  • @filmriot Sorry, I tried to make an inference without really listening. I thought it was going to be like a student film.

I dont know about the film but where would I be able to find the Behind the Scenes footage when it comes out? :D

  • @sup3000639 this is the behind the scenes footage?

  • @Grodpojken The full footage.

  • @ogiugi96 I have to disagree there. I understand that there will be those that aren't interested in this topic... But the main point of Film Riot is to try and help upcoming filmmakers, so with that in mind this was an important episode for those who are in pursuit of this industry.

  • @filmriot I've got to say I think these last two episodes have been the most useful of them all. I mean, sure, I'm interested in visual effects and the build up an understanding of these programs, but as a film maker all I've ever done is these short 'one trick pony' videos and found the idea of shooting somthing this big with a script, proper lighting, dialoge, etc. extremly intimidating and, as such, have found these last two episodes very helpful and insightful.

  • @filmriot Amen sir!

  • @filmriot Very much so I LOVED this episode I'm shooting my next short film which is more character driven than my previous ones, and you would not believe how much of this insight I'm taking away for my own use to give to my lead character. Thanks so much Ryan!

  • @filmriot These are great Ryan! You guys are awesome!

  • @ogiugi96 I also disagree. im in film school and this stuff was great.

  • @ogiugi96 I disagree also. From a directors stand point this episode was very informative and a great asset. I may have not been what your used to but I feel it got what it was supposed convey very effectively. Great work guys!

  • @ogiugi96 on the contrary, it was the most informative episode, therefore, since we're all stating opinions here, it was the best. If you want pure short videos with good VFX, hop over to freddiew's channel, you'll probably find what you're looking for.

  • 1:22 thats a long curse word

  • @BadAssEffects Hey Ry, I think you were right.

  • Hey, love the show! being a young person going into high school, and knowing that i want to be in the film business these videos really help and I love them! but i have one question about "your favorite tool- i believe it is the masking tool. Is there anything like it in Final Cut Express, Thanx!

  • at 1:20 i thought he was saying something dirty about jenny! :O

  • What camera is being used for the film?

  • @Snipefox The Canon XL-H1.

  • @filmriot I thought you said at one point you were going to be using the Canon 5DMII. What made you decide to use the XL-H1 over the 5DMII?

  • @filmriot I work with the Canon XLH1, what was that extension on the end? it looked like a focal length adapter with an EOS lens at the end. I worked with a guy who had carbon fiber looking adapters to use with his Nikon lenses on his Panasonic ??? I'm interested in learning more about them.

  • I really like the Canon XL-H1 what was that adapter on the end?

  • @BadAssEffects Let me guess... We made fun of a movie you really like on Film State? ;)

  • @filmriot hey

what kind of lens did you use on the SONY XL-H1?

    keep up the good work!

  • @filmriot you guys already made a short, just use the scenes from those last episode's when josh dies and ryan raises him from the death and he gets evil and slashes with a bad ass katana in his mind et cetera

  • I agree with Ryan about the whole, knowing your actor and having a good relationship with them. I also like how he gives positive reinforcement by telling them what they did right and then critiques what they did wrong.

  • Bruno looks like a young Joe Piscopo. I do gotta say that this is great way to see how to make a film on the cheap. Can't wait to start filming.

  • The awkward silence after the awkward coffee sips after the awkward comment!! hahaha!! Film Riot FTW. I'm finishing up planning my own short and this series of episodes about "Tell" are gold! Thanks, keep it up!!!

  • What does your "steady cam west thingy" cost? :P

  • It's been cool to be following Film Riot's recent progress: The 100th episode, the new logos/look, and now "Tell". Keep up the good work!
