Just found out about the passing of Rowland. Very sad news. Saw him late October in Sydney - and he was great. He did look sick in comparison to recently (saw him earlier in the yr at Nick Cave's ATP) - but did not hinder his guitar playing and songs. Very very sad news. I loved Rowland's authorative, fearless, sometimes sneering, sometimes sweet, always innovative ROCK. RIP ROWLAND.
What the fuck? Nearly half of the original Birthday Party is dead now? They aren't even that old! With the passing of Roland S. Howard, alongside that of Lux Interior (The Cramps) earlier this year, not to mention ol' "Wacko Jacko," I nominate 2009 as one of the saddest years ever, for music at least!
that might be one of the best chord progressions I've ever heard in the history of music. it is so emotionally involved and right when it reaches it's peak it sinisterly tip toes away. it's a monster arrangement . fuckin' a. RIP rowland s. howard...
it looks like an mxr blue box and distortion +. the blue box is mentioned in the bad seed biography, the dist + is a guess based on the casing colour/shape etc...
definitely a Dist +, I read an old Guitar World interview with him in it. At that time he had switched to only an EQ pedal used like an overdrive. Then I think he's switch back to the first two pedals. :-)
In an interview he's said he only ever uses an MXR Distortion + , an MXR Blue Box, an Equalizer (Boss, I think) with everthing turned all the way up and a Fender Twin Reverb amp. I don't have to say anything about the guitar, do I?
unique and soulful guitar. incredible!! Birthday Party a classic band but so short lived

Michael Jackson wasn't the only. Post-punk also lost true men like Rowland S. Howard and Colin Sharp (ex Durutti Column singer). Rip Rowland & Colin.
