I DO love this movie, by the way. It was my favorite Disney movie when I was little kid. Even when you know the history, you like to forget it for a few moments and just relish the beautiful colors and music. I was heartbroken (literally) when I learned the real story of Pocahontas in 3rd grade.
Ho hum. If we were going for historical accuracy here, they would have included the fact that Pocahontas was actually 12 when she met John Smith (who was a short, middle-aged brunette with a big ego), was kidnapped years later by the English (I think), and also was eventually converted to Christianity, renamed Rebecca, was married to John Rolfe, had a son, and died of smallpox at age 23.
Pocahontas has and always will be my favorite Disney movie. Too bad they had to ruin this relationship with the sequel. You can't build this love up and then crush it with historical accuracy. If they wanted it to be acurate they should've made this historically accurate, but then we wouldn't have this great movie.
Wow. I heard that Pocahontas falls in love with John Rolfe in the second film. Why the hell she falls in love with another damn guy? Do I care about real history? Hell no! Disney Company does not need to make exact same as real history! This is entertainment! Anyways, Pocahontas and John Smith is a cute couple rather than being with stupid damn John Rolfe..... If I was Pocahontas in the second film, I will dump John Rolfe, and I will wed John Smith instead!
Pocahontas 1 is so much better than Pocahontas 2, because Pocahontas and John Smith are together, and because of "Colors of the Wind" which was my favorite Disney song when I was a little child! My favorite Disney song now is "Best of Friends" from Fox and the Hound!
lol. i think i like the real john smith better than disney's version of him. real john smith was short, redheaded, a notorious liar who told tall tales about his adventures. A real character! i think disney should have used elements from him to beef up their johhn's personality.
Such a beautiful scene. And notice that there aren't even words spoken in the first few minutes! It's a beautiful movie.
And let's not forget, this movie was OBVIOUSLY not aiming to be historically accurate. It's not even claiming to be. It's a romance fantasy, just like the movie Inglorious Basterds was a revenge fantasy. Neither are meant to be historically accurate, but to present a story.
i dont understand why, when the whole disney story has been inacurate, they decide to make her end up with Rolf like in real life. I mean if they were gonna do that they could've made Pocahontas n Smith FRIENDS not lovers. N if Disney wanted to b acurate then they shouldve drawn Pocahontas to look like a 12 yr old like she really was. Point is, I HATED the 2nd movie, plus the animations were horrible
Okay so wind started singing when they met, the compas pointed him meaning her path led to him, she saved him, she followed him before he even met her, he didn't kill her when he had the chance to, but she ended up with Rolfe. Please tell me how that makes sense
@theprincessactress Right? it's like can the signs be any more clearer??? and to make everything worse, Rolfe wasn't even as hot as John. can you say fail?
God , this scene gives me goosebumps- this is like in mytop 5 favourite disney film's. The music... and ah gosh it's just amazing <3 and @MsBrokenBallerina couldn't agree more, that is one stupid sequel !
Love at first sight. I think theyre so cute together. Its a shame that they made a sequel, but I am not letting that ruin my favorite movie so I just pretend it doesnt exist. :)
I love how she learns English by friggin' osmosis, lol. Ah Disney.... Whatever, she's hot. So I'll overlook it. I just wish everytime they showed her straight on (ie most of the movie), her nose didn't disappear.
God, I LOVED her eyes whenever they did that close-up! Hell, I loved the way everything in this movie flowed so naturally, with all the colors, and the characters....*le sigh*
That was the REAL problem with the sequel (and most of Disney sequels in general):
-the animation quality SUCKED!
And:
-the story should have been more developed and thought out!
they made the eyebrows brown because they thought it might make the Pocahontas's face too harsh. now days celebs etc eyebrows never match the hair colour tee hee

pocahontas never love john smith. she only saved him as part of a ritual so that powhatan would accept john smith as his own and to show his dominance.
@MsBrokenBallerina i know!! so what if in history pocahontas ends up with rolfe?? john smith is hotter and everything else about this movie is innacurate so wtf?
great movie but why do all the brits have american accents??? american accents didn't even exist in those days! that's so typical disney/USAish. Plus there's nothing more charming than a cockney lilt which john smith would have had :)
Who freaking cares if they existed or not. (Btw if you noticed they do have accents, John Smith is the only one who doesn't.) As far as I'm concerned if Disney makes an amazing movie like this they can add all the "American" accents they want as long as the quality makes up for it.
i love the way john takes his hat off, as he comes towards her, so cute. beautiful scene, such a shame they wrecked the fantastic storyline with the second film. screw historical accuracy!
I just realized the song playing during John Smith seeing Pocahontas for the first time is a mix between "If I Knew You" instrumentally and a bit of the finale song of the movie, which is a reprise of "Colors of the Wind."
This scene has so many interesting nuances, like the confrontation between the Old and New World, and John Smith recognizing the beauty of this new land when he sees Pocahontas.
@degree7 That's so true. There's a depth to this movie that people don't even realize is there. It portrays the clash of ideology between the Europeans and Native Americans beautifully as well.
i really, really wish that they put the music starting at 1:41 into the soundtrack or something so i can listen to it over and over again...i know "if i never knew you" has a similar theme, but its not the same :(
I love her she's so pretty but her lips have always bugged me. At times in the movie when she's meant to be sad her lips are always set into this weird upturn that makes her look as though she is smiling.
I love this movie sooo much! The music beginning at 1:46 ist the much best i ever can imagine for a scene like this. This movie makes me dream, that "this" can happen to me one time in my life too, this love at the first sight without many words..

Pocahontas does not look like a 12-year-old in this Disney movie.
Pocahontas was born in 1595. She was 12 years old in 1607 when she first met Captain John Smith.
Historical records do not suggest that Smith and Pocahontas were lovers.

I love this scene, hubby HATES this scene: Oh yeah, he says, I just learned English in two seconds!!!!

That's the whole point of the scene. She doesn't "learn" english.
"Listen with your heart, you will understand".
They had a deep connection. They understood eachother on a spiritual level. They aren't speaking the same language.

yes, they are. she already knew just enough english for them to understand each other- the native americans picked it up from the first settlers in virginia.

Right. But, as we all know, Disney is highly inaccurate. This isn't supposed to be an educational movie. It's a love story.
She didn't know english. They understood eachother through the language of love (And by that, I don't mean Spanish or Italian)

it doesn't technically matter- like you said, it's a love story. most of what they say is in english so that WE can understand it!
but whatever language they're speaking, what they're saying is much more important :):)
