  • hey babes

  • drumming without shoes it the BEST!

  • The fact is, this is the best drummer, song writer i have ever witnessed, as his intuitive reasoning is beyond a doubt something ANY musician should be envious of. I have never heard him miss or go off, he is outstanding, and if you aren't a CREATIVE musician, you may just never be able to see it. its a shame.

  • amazing? no

  • Such a unique drummer.

  • What song is this?

  • @thisguyisaninja 'wrong time capsule'

  • Too bad the sound is shitty.

  • this is a band of too many cliche's for me....

  • @geoffreyprime yeah yeah yeah hmmmmmmmm i agreeeeee

  • hes so good! + really modest for using only 2 drums, shows you dont need 20 drums to make a damn good beat

  • @Harpo6 I like when a drummer can do that. The drummer for the Flaming Lips uses a small kit. I love his style.

  • he needs more durable sticks...

  • @capturedevice62 If you didnt notice..hes playing with carbon fiber sticks..

  • Haha they should do a show with dream theater, put portnoy's set next to his.

  • @ lukepleaseshutup...............You know I've seen Greg play with even LESS than this in earlier times. Once I saw him play with: bass drum, snare, one large cymbal, and HE SOUNDED FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!! Better than some drummers who have two bass drums, 10 cymbals, high-hat, 2 floor toms, 3 rack toms, etc. Greg is the man. AND he's a very nice guy. I've met everyone except Satomi, but they're awesome.

  • My cousin told me he doesn't want to learn drums cause he doesn't want to have to buy all the bells and whistles. I showed this video to him and he's reconsidering.

  • great drumming but the sound is distorted!

  • what song are they playing?

  • @birdofj "Wrong Time Capsule"

  • they call him Deerhoofs because he has tourettes syndrome and he keeps yelling "DEERHOOOOOOOFS"

  • If you like ramming notes like a five-year old, here is mentor.

  • It's a shame that the audio quality is so bad that I can't actually hear this awesome drummer. To me it just looks like some dude having a seizure with a couple of sticks in front of my hand.

  • No toms! Nice!

  • this is what i like about greg he has awesome rudiments and when he plays he is not playing to play he is actually feeling the drumset its like the drums is what makes him happy such as a natural high what i dont like about him is he isn't wearing shoes

  • Im thinking he is sitting on a milk crate? or something very low..... I read about this guy in Modern Drummer. KiCkAsS!

  • This is so good. I just wish the quality of the video matched his drumming ability.

  • @jazzmaster341 I don't think even 1080p could match his drumming ability.

  • I feel like the whole "minimal drumset" is a bit gimmicky, but he uses what he has in some really awesome and creative ways, so I'm definitely not arguing. He definitely pushes the envelope in terms of drumming. My only complaint is I can barely hear or see what's happening in the video :D

  • @ATPrelax It's kept small for travel purposes, not gimmick purposes.

  • I kinda feel sorry for his cymbals. They're completely demolished

  • The very definition of less is more!

  • 5/5 that's some good moves

  • CRAZY DRUM SET!

  • he's classically trained @ drumming

  • He went to music conservatory but not for drumming. He's self taught in that. (I'm not sure, but I think he only started playing after Chris Cohen approached him about starting Deerhoof.)

  • @gamera84, just a factual correction, Greg started Deerhoof with Rob Fisk. Satomi joined after they put out a couple of 7"s. Then Fisk left and was replaced by John Dieterich and Cohen joined the band after that. Anyway, Greg is indeed a great drummer, one of my all-time favorite. It's hard to tell from this clip because you can't really hear what he's doing.

  • Name'a this song = "Wrong Time Capsule"

  • he reminds me of Animal from the Muppets

  • @rexnickles2 yahyahyahyahyah

  • I never understood the point of comparing musicians. Music is supposed to be enjoyed and appreciated, which is pretty tough to do if all you think about is "well, this guy's not as good as this guy". If the only drummer allowed to play was the best in the world, I'd get bored pretty quick, and a hell of a lot less impressed by interesting and quirky bands like this one.

  • he is awesome. i want his babies

  • spasmic and utterly delicious...

  • o.O he play barefoot

  • so do i. this is the first person i've seen do the same thing as me

  • this guy went to one of the most prestigous music schools, (same as the guy from yeah yeah yeahs) so hes kind of a fuckin beast

  • Serve the music Greg does.

  • if you think this is crazy,...

    you have no idea

check out ZACH HILL from HELLA

    youll shit bricks

    =]

  • Zach Hill is technically amazing but al about masturbation

  • Great! I love drummers who are all about masturbation!

  • OK! FINE I found a better video of him! This video doesn't do him justice! Sheesh! Should post a good video of him.

  • Does anyone else wonder if Derek's the best twat?

  • Just keeping it real.

  • beast

  • what song is this???

i like the groove of it

    pls

  • wrong time capsule

  • guys please..... "there is no such thing as the best drummer or best guitar player" music is self expression, i am shure players have wider knowledge and skill but when it comes down to it , its all expression...anyways this guy is sick at drums, hes defently got ADD haha

  • In my opinion, Greg Saunier is producing WAY groovier tracks than Danney Carey ever has. That being said, I think all of the arguing going on here is purely about taste. As a trained musician and drummer, I can assure you that both Greg and Danney are very good at what they do (both have impeccable technique). It just boils down to what you appreciate in a musician.

  • derek that is soo true

  • Just because you bang on the drums real hard and dramticly, doesn;t make an amzaing drummer. Check out Danny Carry's solos. Thats an amazing drummer.

  • how appropriate the band he plays in is called tool.

    you tool

  • LOL! How fucking clever did you have to be to come up with that!?

  • Oh I could always just say he's a boring chucklefuck who makes lame, masturbatory dadrock on his 40 piece kit, even though nobody fucking listens to songs in 13/8ths time.

"tool" just sums it up more succinctly.

  • I guess you have never heard tool. And if you know anything about music and or drumming you would know that ususally drummers with larger sets are the better drummers! And Deerhoof? Anyone can play the music they do after a months practice. You should play an instrument, before say all this shit. You really sound stupid.

  • the funny part is I do.

Also every time I try to listen to Tool I get bored and change it to T. I. LOL

  • cant believe u said usually drummers with bigger sets are the better drummers. you sound really stupid saying that.

  • look at all the best drmmers. they do. rush. tool. metallica. the list goes on and on.

  • lets see buddy rich........big kit....no...best drummer ever......probably yes

  • the greatest drummers dont need a big drumset, they use what they've got and make something out of it. why overkill when you know what you need to play to make it sound great.

  • I'd rather hear actually musical beats, then bangbangbang crash bang. And NO HE IS NOT A GREAT DRUMMER FOR THE LAST TIME! I know you deerhoof fans want to defend your band. But face it! Great bands don't always have the greatest talents! I talked about Tool, and how danny carey was a really good drummer, but i'm not afraid to admit that Adam (their Guitarist) Isnt the best guitar player! But its still great music! Get over deerhoof not being the most talented thing in the world!

  • I'm not saying that he is. I'm just saying that size doesn't matter, its all about what timing.

  • Well Yeah, You could be the best drummer in the world and only be playing a snare. But the best drummers in the world do usually have big sets. Just sayin

  • WOW! You are a Moron! IF this is your philosophy of musical drumming, I am sorry, but you are not a musician, PERIOD. Greg has nearly impecible timing, and amazing talent. Dont get me wrong, Danny Carey, Fantastic, he has some of the best coordination/syncopated rhythms I have EVER heard. But.. not the greatest. Try someone like Jojo Mayer, or BUDDY RICH who get SO much more for less. It may not be your style, does not mean it is not talent, you cannot state an opinion as fact.

  • I didn't say he wasnt a good drummer! I just said he isnt so awesome tht he should get this kind of recognition. I knew drummers in high school that match this guy. And as for timing....I hear no awesome polyrythms nothing fancy. O and try Neil Peart!

  • HAHAHA you DIDNT? "HE IS NOT A GREAT DRUMMER FOR THE LAST TIME!"

Nice try douche. Anywhoozles, Neil Peart, as famous as he can be, really lacks the technique to match up to any of the greatest drummers (IMO Jojo and Buddy), of which you no none, since your basic ideal of good drumming comes from the most popular band contest, not actual talent, seeing how you believe having a big drum set seemingly makes you better. Oh and using polyrhthms doesnt make you better.. by any means.

  • Oh... one more thing.. Im just so pissed at your ignorance that I just cant seem to stop myself, hahahah!!>>Adgaj#$&.

I dont understand your "nothing fancy" bit, as Greg utilizes EXTREMELY abstract timing rhythms, and still sustains a beat to grasp on to, while tossing in his signature buzz on almost every hit. This to me is VERY fancy, and if anything SUPER unique. Now, this doesnt make him THE BEST, or GREAT, but something definitley to look up to. Unlike you, you image-based jag! Love love

  • um ok. and i dont know about imaged based. but love love

  • proooooooooooobaaaaaaaaabbbbbbbbblyyyyyyyyyyy because you think that the best drummers have large drumsets. Which to me, is nothing but an image issue, rather than utilizing the instrument.

SO, go grab a glass and four five times your way into all that is hearing applefritter twitter my titter, ¿¿BBalls??

  • Well I can see where you might think that. Cause i did kind of say it. But i dont think they are good drummer because of their sets. I really think They are good drummers. The ones i mentioned. And they just happen to have more then 3 drums they are playing on.

  • Oh And thanks for subscribing! You rock!

  • Wow really? Cause I dont even think hes THAT great, but if you're better.. than awesome! Especially since you've never picked up sticks, or learned how to coordinate your body, you probably do play that shitty. And as far as "Abstract timing rhuthms" (its rhythms actually..), you couldn't understand them, because you dont play drums! Being unorthodox doesnt mean shitty.

  • Well I am impressed by him. You must be one awesome rookie.

  • You don't take no shit from nobody, baqarah

  • How the FUCK do you think you can say that?

You think he has no talent? A drop oh his sweat has more talent then you do.

  • And who played Buddy Richs memorial concert. Was it......Neil Peart. I think it might of been.

  • and a SHIT load of drummers played that, doesnt give them any more credibility than the last. Also he used a double pedal in that gig.. which I really frown upon seeing how Buddy.. never.. did?

  • I didnt say they have to have big sets. I said they usually do.

  • triscoff go fuck yourself.

derekjf85 has a very good point, although this guy's pretty good, just being all dramatic when you play doesn't make you amazing.

and danny carey is a phenomenal drummer, and tool are a hugely succesful prog metal band...so i don't know where "lame, masturbatory dadrock on his 40 piece kit, even though nobody fucking listens to songs in 13/8ths time." must have come from.

    clue up, prick.

  • I heard you are in metallica. is this true?

if so, you guys still fucking suck.

  • yup, that's true

  • i love tool and i think danny carey is definately one of if not the best drummer of all time, but greg is a great drummer as well with a different style which i admire, and deerhoof is a good band.

  • The song is "Wrong Time Capsule"

  • what song are they playing?

  • how does greg saunier do it?

i don't know what i would do with out my ride and my tom-toms

  • whatever it is, it would probably look alot like that...

  • He is not good because he's "spastic". He is good because of the sounds he manages to get out of such a simple kit.

Trans-Siberian orchestra are just washouts from Savatage playing Christmas carols.

  • But the sounds he is producing are "spastic".

  • That man is a glorious retard and his drumming is delightfully spontanious

  • retard is offensive to Greg. More like pure geniuse, however the fuk you spell it. Pure matha faka

  • I meant it in a good way.

  • delightfully spastic!

  • Solo drumming is delf indulgient tripe.

  • This isn't either of those.

  • yeah sorry I was replying to what someone else said, i dont know why it came up here completely out of context. I actually think this guys is fantastic, as are the band.

  • how is solo drumming different from soloing on any other instrument?

that must be the most ignorant comment i've Ever seen on youtube...

    and you spelled "self" wrong...

    fag...

  • First off, finger hit the d key wich is next to the s key, well done! you got my number with that one, that truely makes me a fag.

Secondly, soloing on any instrument is pretty self indilgient and ego motivated rather than musically motivated. Drum solos usually end up worse because without notes to experiment with the drummers tend to just go faster and faster untill all grove has gone and its just a display of techincal wankery. Not that guitarists and bassists dont do the same.

  • only if that's the intention of the musician...

you obviously don't play an instrument because that's a really one-sided view (about as one-sided as you can get if you ask me).

it's not about showing off or inflating one's own ego; it's about playing your instrument because that's what you like to do...

it's all music, just less band to complicate things...

  • Look I said usually, and usually it's true. Every other fucker plays an instrument these days, usually guitar, a very small fraction of them get to the point of being able to solo well, and an even smaller fraction get there without getting carried away with how fast they can play, and how impressed they can make their friends and people on you tube, and how cool that can feel. And when that's what's motivating your musical choices then its not realy about music anymore.

  • you're being way too general about it...

maybe that's your own personal experience, but from my point of view soloing is about alot more than just looking cool: it's about pushing yourself to the edge of what you're capable of...

it's like a juggler juggling swords, or a mountain climber climbing a fucking huge mountain, they're there because that's what they love to do, nothing more, nothing less...

  • the guy is the best drummer in the world man!!

look at him hes going for it

  • he IS a great drummer. entertaining to watch

  • hahaha

  • I agree with the simplicity thing....So I bought a car with one door, no head lights two windows, no engine and one wheel....great idea thanks....then I got a new girlfriend with one eye and no legs....things are so easy now....

  • haha barefoot

  • He waves around a lot and he plays on the off beat. big deal.

  • I agree he is sick, just that.

  • its funny how people get so caught up in things like drum kit size and what kind of instrument is being played. its like saying you're not a good guitarist if you don't have a huge amp and a brand new les paul. these people are missing the point of what it means to be a good player. greg is a sick fucking drummer. if you don't recognize that-you're really missing something

  • Why does he only have a snare, a crash, and a bass drum is he's so great?

  • Does one need an exceptionally large drumkit to be a good drummer?

I think this video proves my point.

  • didn't you comment on one of the go! team's video's also?

i think we have the same music tastes, which is very rare.

  • Ahaha,

I wouldn't be too surprised tbh.

but it would be very if we had exactly the same music taste,

    I am somewhat eclectic.

  • well i would be, i go to a school where everyone listens to shitty pop music,

whenever they ask to listen to my ipod they'll say "this is dumb, you got any rap?"

  • I feel so sorry for you,

I know so many people who actually like music for than its surface value,

I actually feel so sorry for you.

  • doesnt sound like yr very eclectic

  • Simplicity my friend. Simple, catchy music will ALWAYS be better insanely technical "melt-your-face-off-just-because-we-can" dragonforce SHIT music. I never think about how good the musicians are, only if the the music is pleasing to me. Try it out, you might actually ENJOY music.

  • You don't have to have a Neil pert drum kit to be amazing. But it helps to have a few additions to a drum kit. I mean, wouldn't listening to a snare and a crash solo eventually get boring and obnoxious? Its not a matter of simplicity, its a matter of variety. I mean, the only other person who has a drum kit like this is Meg White.

  • Comment removed

  • Dragonforce is not technical actually. They do the same shit in almost every song.

  • prefrence

  • he can do this well barefoot amazing

  • This clip doesn't approach anything close to amazing. I wish people would stop posting 30 second clips from live shows taken with their phones and cameras that sound and look so terrible.

You have to wade through so much crap to find anything worth watching.

  • Why would I watch more than one video? If you read my comment, you'll find I didn't really make a judgment on his ability as a drummer. I commented on the clip alone. This clip doesn't evince whatever skill he may or may not have. It's average. His "amazingness?" Are you kidding? Please tell me now if you're below the age of thirteen, because you certainly seem like it. Jesus Christ, you're a fucking dolt. Having a child's drum kit and spazzing out makes it good? Go fall on a knife, retard.

  • I always love it when people try to explain their point of view by starting to curse and insulting people. Did it ever come to your mind that there are people out there who don't need someone being totally perfect on a 42 piece drumkit? I just tried to capture (with a cheap digital camera) just someone going mad on a minimal drumkit and being quite good at it. In my eyes. Sometimes people like to see music as something they feel and not some science.

  • I agree with you, I don't think that this clip is 'amazing' in any way.

  • i think him having a snare bass and hi hat is the whole point of his amazingness...watch more than one video of him before you state your pointless and unwanted opinion

  • thats a lot of cymbols for greg. :)

  • Greg Saunier is awesome.

  • haha

  • Lol at this vid. No toms, this is hilarious. He's going insane back there, it would be fun to see him live haha.

  • The reigns are just nnot there.lettin loose! Ecstatic!

  • Learn the fucking spell then comment!

  • That is the spell of good music!

  • Can't tell if his unique playing is formed by his lack of drums or not. He's pretty good though.

I truly enjoy this Deerhoof stuff.

  • I believe he studied at college. His unique style is a combination of his training and his self imposed limitations.

  • Yeah he studied at one and at at a music academy or something..

However I've seen a few drummers that have been to college for music and their style remains generic, mainly they come out as more of a studio drummer. This guy is just unique I'd say.

  • I saw a very long interview and he says that his unique style is due to being very uncomfortable on stage and his very limited drum set. When I saw them on Saturday he didn't even have a high hat.

  • Uncomfortable on stage? That's rather odd... I wonder if he likes tries to use his stage frustration as kind of a motivation.

    Still pretty sweet though.

  • mm. he went to oberlin conservatorium of music. same with jon theodore of mars volta fame and brian chase of yeah yeah yeahs.

    an odd creative bunch!

  • youtube reply button = fuckin useless

  • he's like jesus only without a beard

too bad u can't here nothin and i like the no shoes aproach

  • so was your comment.

  • i read an interview with him

he pretty much said he hates playing the real beats likve

    lol

  • he's amazing recorded, unfortunately he always fucks up his timing live. i also don't like how he never plays the original drum beats, i'm always more turned off than impressed by him.

  • Well, I've heard him screw up a couple of times, but his fills are very...unconventional...so sometimes it gives the impression of being offbeat when it's not. IMO, he's a great drummer. I'm a drummer.

  • what the hell? he's not out of time. you are.

  • the sound quality of this video is shitty...Greg Saunier is great, but it's not just him that is Deerhoor...Fans should also check out Chris Cohen's "The Curtains" and the rest of the noise-rock from San-fran such as "Natural Dreamers" and such.

  • wow... which song is it from?

  • This is from "Wrong Time Capsule", which can be found on the "The Runners Four" album.

  • Greg and Satomi together on stage are what really makes Deerhoof such a fucking fun band to see. Greg goes apeshit on his kit while Satomi hops around and coos at the audience... The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, or whatever they say.

  • Don't forget about John Deitrich. He is amazing as well. the stuff that he writes for guitar is amazing.

  • it's kind of unfair to the other band members that he is so mesmerising to watch! when i saw them at the scala i was looking at him 95% of the time!

    greg is special.

  • I was at the Scala Gig! He seemed very shy at the end but I think he comunicates clearest through the drums. He was a gentleman who hawls arse on the drums. Minimalist kit is the way forward. Hey Ho I'm off to Japan soon.

  • yes, he is very hypnotizing live

  • deerhoof with bad sound beats whoever with good sound

  • he is pretty damn amazing.

  • the greatest.

    more of this please! :-)
