Remember that the round is flying through the air well past the speed of sound. The only reason you're hearing this is because the target is just shy of being too far away for the shot of the cannon to be heard. Had it been another 700 or so meters away from the actual gun, the round would have landed well before the report of the howitzer and you would have had no idea.
@SDAirborne173 Actually not. The speed of sound is constant regardless of distance but the shell travels more slowly the further away from the gun it is. Had the target been 700 meters further away, the time gap between the sound of the gun and shell impact would have been longer. The average speed of the shell on the horizontal plane is clearly subsonic, not well past the speed of sound.

It looks like they set the camera on a tripod and took off. I was sitting their thinking if the next one was going to hit the camera. One came very close. I wonder what was that poping sound before the sheel hit.
@pauls317 The popping sound before the shells hit would be the sound of the gun that fired it a few klicks away, keeping in mind the speed of sound, which means the shell is traveling only slightly slower, and by the time you hear the pop the round is 3/4ths of the way to it's destination.
@luiskilla91592 If we got the video from them, they hit their target. They like to set up cameras to film their own activities but when we get 'em, we find their videos.
Thats pretty fast counter battery fire, seems like the counter battery fired back in no time. Good job guys, you either got them or at atleast destroyed there equipment.
i dont know, but they should make some kind of automatic artillery, because this thing firing takes ages to fire each shot, and it gives time for them to run off.
that is fucking intense would not want to be on the receiving end of that shit........but they hit nadda ... did not even shake the camera or the guy behind it......soooooooooooo in short ... i want my tax money back for the last 7 years....lol
@villinousone83 The enemy almost always sets up cameras to film it's activities from a distance to show their superiors what they do. Often times, they get killed and when the Soldiers move into the area, they find the camera hidden somewhere in the area within filming distance. This is one of these kind of videos...if we have it, they were killed most likely or scared off.
@steven4068 actually this is a training video showing insurgents how they need to remotely activate their short range artillery and then vacate the area within several minutes because counter-artillery is very fast.
@LAGtheNoggin It has never been said absolutely that they were killed in this shelling but that at some time, the film was retrieved. Ever watch TV or see their videos on the internet? They have ability to make pretty advanced videos and graphics. It also does not mean those being shot at were not hit..only that one of their guys from a distance filmed this and it was eventually retrieved...
Gotta love them 155mm rounds

The counter battery fire is actually dead on. It's hitting right where the rockets were fired from. The camera is set up a ways away.

@steven4068 So Haji here had an in-field editing suite for added jihadi calls and logo?
If it was found like this in a camera in the field then it was filmed and edited way prior, probably not even by the same guy.
Either that or the US released it and some jihadis edited it and it then found its way to you.

at :30-:31 did one of the rockets explode or was that part of the counter fire

Great audio and great video. Love the sound of an incoming artillery round as they whistle through the air.
First incoming round at 1:05 and more follow every 10 seconds till the end of the video.

Insurgents also have artillery in Afghanistan, so it is two-way street.

Notice at the start of the video, that they first shoot rockets at us, then this is our return fire.
steven4068 2 years ago
To me, that is the most interesting part too.
steven4068 2 years ago
Wow I was impressed by how quickly the shells landed from when you hear the blast.
EricToTheScionti 2 years ago
I'm no expert but i'd say that's because both the shell and the sound travel at similar speeds
ArgentineDude 2 years ago
Since the artillery shells are sub-sonic then you'd hear the blast first, makes sense.
