Had to watch again. You are my hero. I love all of your work. I actually went ahead and got the pastel pencils. They are great. I have a pic I just finished of a wolf. Would love your feedback and maybe what areas I really need to improve on
@lisaaghamiri Hi, that's great you got the pencils, don't you just love them! Thank you again for your very nice comments, sweet!! I'd love to see your wolf..... ;) Roby
yet again, you have left me in total awe ,you are soooo amazing! its unbelivable! can you please tell me what tools you used for this magnificent masterpiece?
@dakotamillionwolf Hi there! Thanks for the great comment, that's so nice! I am using Strathmore Illustration or Bristol Board 500 series cold press vellum 10 ply paper. My favortite brands of soft pastels are Unison, Sennelier, Schmincke and Rembrandt. My pencils are CarbOthello pastel pencils and I get them and the paper at Dick Blick here on-line. Thanks again! :)) Roby
@Oruara101 Hello! As for tips.... I don't really know. You'll probably find your nitch just by experimenting around. What works for one won't necessarly work for another. If it's realism, do your homework and research your subject before you start so you can go in with confidence. Most important is to have fun!!! Good luck!! :)) Roby
Hey Rob, Tried using similar techniques with this with art pencils a while ago and it went horribly wrong ^^ what Pencil Pastel brand would you recomend me to try it out. Thanks a bunch as u know, ur my F****ing hero!!! xD xx Oru
@Oruara101 Hi Oru! Thanks for the great compliment! I highly recomend Stabilo CarbOthello pastel pencils. I bought the entire set. I then buy them by the box (each color) or seperately. They come with a number not a color on the pencil so it's kinda hard to reorder. You may or may not use all of the colors but it's nice to have the set. My paper is Bristol Board 500 series cold press vellum and I get the pencils and paper at Dick Blick. I use the X-ACTO Powerhouse elec sharpener. Good luck!!!
@robertarobybaer Thanks :) I didn't know you could get pastel pencils! :) I'll get to practicing straight after I've bought some :) Thank you for your help! I love your style of work ^.^
@Blaze8Star That's great! The best thing for you to do is just jump in and start to experiment with them. I use them in combination with the stick pastels. I use the pencils for the hairs and eyes and the fine detail. You'll need a good sharpener. I use the X-ACTO Powerhouse electric. After your initial sharpening you'll only need to leave the pencil in for about 1 to 2 seconds. You'll get a great point but be sure to hold it very straight or it will snap the pastel. Let me know how you do :))
Wow, I love your work! This may seem a silly question, but are you using like a pastel pencil? Or is it just like a really smudgy pencil? :) Thanks! Also, I chose your work to do an artist copy of for my art project at school, any tips in copying your "Eye of the Storm" piece?
@Blaze8Star Hello! Thanks, not a silly question at all. I use CarbOthello pastel pencils and my paper is Bristol Board 500. Permission granted to use my image. As for tips, not sure what your project entails. If you are drawing free hand you'll need to look for the shapes, draw them then start adding the ears etc. Just like this video you'll need to add the hairs one at a time. Don't expect it to be perfect, it takes practice, practice and more practice, I've been at this for a few years! :)))
Wow this is absolutely stunning! I can't believe you have that much skill! After watching all of your videos I can definitely say that you are the best artist I have ever seen.
@colorfulmind147 HI! Thanks so much for this great comment...not the best but I sure do love trying!! Still learning after all of these years at it! Thanks again!!!!! :))
Amazing again Roby! I finished "Blue Wolf" and it is sold! It took about 6 hours also. Don't know how to let you see it, but I'd sure love your critique. :-) You are my inspiration, can't wait to see more. Do you ever paint the wild cats???
@Artlover62 Thanks! Congratulations on selling your newest, that's great!! I have a zebra protrait coming soon so stay tuned for that. I have painted a Siberian Tiger with a cub but that's it for now. :))
@Kayanite1 Hello! Yes, I am self taught but it didn't hurt that my Mom and Grandmother were both artists. I had a couple of years of highschool art but have learned through trial and error. The best advice that I could give you if you want to do realism is to study your subject. Learn hair patterns and basic body structure, so helpful. Most of all is practice, the more you do the better you'll get! My son got the art gene from me his Mom:) Actually he got music and art from me:)) LOL! Good luck
Did you teach yourself to do this, I'm very interested in wolves and I draw cartoon ones all the time and sometimes attempt at a realistic one. If you could give me advice?
Your son is so lucky to have a skilled face like you and to have such a magnificent peice of art.
@mambernb14 Hello and thanks! I think the best advise for you is to remember that practice and study are the keys to achieving realism. Know the hair patterns and basic body structure and lastely contrasts. Use contrasts to give depth and shape to your subject. Lightest against darkest tones and values. You'd be surprised how well it works! Good luck!
Hi Jamiee, the paper I use is Bristol board 500 cold press. I use stick pastels such as Rembrandt, Unison, Schminke, Sennelier. CarbOthello pastel pencils are my favorite! To make the head stand out notice that everything behind the head is darker. The lead leg matches in value the head because I wanted them to appear forward. Dark tones recede and light tones and values stand out giving the illusion of form and importance. As I mentioned before learn the patterns of the hair, very important!
Hi I was wondeing what materials do you use to create you artwork. I have some pastel pencils and I have tried to follow your tutorials but I'm not sure on how you're able to make it realistic and how you make the head stand away from the body, and how you are able to create the fur texture. thanks for your help
Hi! I absolutely adore all of your videos, you have such talent <3
This is just a small request, but do you think you could show your sketch at the start of the next video? I love seeing how pictures end up in comparison to their sketch~
@robertarobybaer would you be willing to share your reference photo information. I once contacted a photographer from a "Wolves" calendar asking to use one of their photos as reference. They responded back wanting to know why etc, I offered to give them the final painting free of charge in exchange for use of the photo but never heard back. Finding good high quality images is so hard. Especially if you are noit a photograoher, like me.
@customanimalart Hello! Most of my reference photos are mine. I have been lucky to be able to have interaction with a wolf rescue with hands on. I make up my own backgrounds trying to achieve natural settings. In the past I have used national photographers but you have to pay a fee and sign a hard copy with intent and number of copies you're printing. They usually don't want the artwork as they have the photo. Try Monty Sloan Wolfpark, he's reasonable and a nice guy!
@CinnAmon6767 Hi, I don't use any blending tools just my fingers. I have baby wipes next to me use use when needed to clean my fingers, works great! :))
