It is not a story or a legend. It is a snapshot of an important event started in 1757, which pulled our people out of the siege of Fort Detroit. I have dreamed of it often since I saw it as a young teen just after Highway 17 opened. The end of the journey will come when my people are ready to become as our ancestors. They are still too busy with money to really be Anishinabe. Fred Jack Manitoumahwhingon
@tribegoddess what does that mean? Do you mean go back to the land? If you were a young teen when Hgw. 17 opened, you are an elder. It would be nice, in a way, if life were so pure....
Tim, Thanks for giving me a quick lesson on your hybrid warbling flute on that last night of INAFA. I am saving to buy one soon. It was so easy to play!
THANK YOU very much for creating this video. This site is ancient & sacred & we are planning a very involved excursion there. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with one of the Midewiwin & this trip & the meaning behind it have been on my mind for quite some time... This will help immensely in planning it.
I visited there 7 years ago. Wonderful time, it was worth a few mosquito bites! Saw the planet Venus set on Lake Superior,(not far from where this was filmed), it was so bright, it cast a shadow; An awesome, beautiful sight, which is very rare to see, so ive been told.
Great vid John! And about time someone gave recognition to Selwyn for his great work in discovering native pictographs. I consider him my mentor. Traced his footsteps, have all his books, own eleven of his paintings, and work on projects with son, Kee. Selwyn should also be credited with 'discovering' Norval Morrisseau. Agawa is beautiful!
Hard to beleive my people made these and so long ago...The sphere (circles)represent the "Star People" and how they travelled- they who came to teach us about medacines, planting, germination of seeds, body purifications, dreaming, being peaceful ppl,ect
they tried to warn us about the "cross" but were to busy being peaceful that we let our guard down. The carved pathes were made by then not us.Belive it or not?!
weather permitting, i'll be up there next weekend. last weekend i took the agawa canyon scenic train ride. highly recommended... goin' again in the fall. _/\_ (namaste)
i have very fond memoris of this place we often camp in agawa bay and some times we go to flame lake because we have a cabin there anyways i once got stung by a bee here and i didn't go on the rocks but in the following years i have and i have a picture of my mom and my aunt infron of the crevas with the bolder over head I love this place and once when we were here our tent got flattened by a windshere

Oral traditions describe the water panther (Mishipishu) as having a sawblade back, red fur, and a "great spiked tail" which he used as a weapon.
That's a stegosaur.

@icebear1946 Similar, but there is much more to the creature than just its physical traits... But excellent description.

discovering !!! these thing were never lost, it would be time to give the Anishinabe credit for their own work.
It is too bad you will never truly understand the story the agawa tells
